Oooh, sounds delightfully Night Vale-ian, how can I not be intrigued? And puzzles and art, sign me up! I'm definitely channeling Night Vale, yes! As well as...actually come to think of it, I probably shouldn't say too much about what my inspirations are because it might give too much away. Fraze Are you planning to reveal more about mechanics and whatnot as it gets closer to time? Re: if it's an individual thing, or if there are teams, etc. Some parts will require teamwork, but in general there won't be teams as such. Some puzzles and activities will be available for everyone to solve/participate in, while others will be hidden until someone claims them (at which point they get sent just to the person/people who claimed them). There's nothing stopping you from asking for outside help, since the only actual rewards for solving a puzzle are the sense of accomplishment and the thrill of knowing another piece of the grand mystery before everyone else does.

Does this mean the game will be overall cooperative rather than competitive? Like, we'll all be unveiling the mystery together, and even if some people find out pieces of the puzzle before others, we'll all find out and 'win' together in the end? I'd actually be really excited for a game like that for a change, rather than having to worry about getting the most points and stuff, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant when you said there'd be no other rewards for puzzles and activities.

Yes, that's correct! Everyone will, more or less, be working toward the common goals of understanding what's going on and finding solutions to the problems that arise. In that sense it's more like A Game of Skill than, say, Hero City or the Mafia games.

OK, so Hunty and I have discussed it a bit, and we decided to change the initial plan and open signups sooner rather than later. Right now we're intending to have signups open once Hunty can make a map of Wrighton, which will be posted here along with the signups. There are a few reasons for this: 1. Hype. Hype is always good. 2. Earlier signups means people will have more time to think about and flesh out their characters. 3. More detailed character profiles will make it easier for Hunty (and anyone else) to draw characters in comics! Also, it looks like a few people are already thinking about character designs, which is awesome, so I wanted to lay down a few guidelines, specifically about fantasy/science fiction elements in characters. Wrighton is a setting where the weirdness is subtle. (At least at first, who knows what may happen later on.) There's some sort-of odd stuff going on, but the people pretty much live normal, mundane lives like the people in this world. The ethos is kind of weird, a bit whimsical, and maybe (but not necessarily) just a tiny bit creepy. Fantastical elements in character design should reflect this. In trope terms this means applying concepts like Magic Realism, Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane, and 20 Minutes into the Future. To give a few examples: OK: A character with a prosthetic limb that functions as well as the real thing. OK: A character who always seems to have a whirring sound around them, stays away from water for some reason, and several people claim up and down they saw the person jump into a second-story window once. OK but keep it subtle: A character stated to have multiple cybernetic parts. Too far: A cyborg/android/sapient robot/etc. explicitly acknowledged as such. OK: A character who's very pale, stays out of direct sunlight, and likes very rare steaks. OK: A character with very sharp canines who you're pretty sure doesn't actually sit in chairs but just floats a bit above them. OK but keep it subtle: Someone who brings a thermos of blood to work with them and goes into a rage if they can't have blood for a few days. Too far: A vampire explicitly acknowledged as such. OK: A person who says hello to the birds in the trees every morning and they all chirp back, who claims to be really into "spirit magic" and likes to hang around crystal shops. OK: A person who really wants to transmute lead into gold, and hasn't been successful as far as anyone knows but there are some really weird sounds coming from their apartment in the middle of the night. OK but keep it subtle: Someone who plays poker with ghosts every Saturday. 1Too far: Yer a wizard, Harry. OK: A completely mundane human character. (Seriously, don't be afraid of mundanes! There's nothing wrong with mundanes!) If you aren't sure whether what you want to do with your character works, feel free to PM me and we can talk about it. Note that I'm not saying fantastical elements are bad for this game and we shouldn't have them - far from it! If done right, they could really enhance the atmosphere of the game! But if things get too far over-the-top too soon, then we'll just have a standard fantasy mish-mash before the story itself even has a chance to get properly weird. 1: Come to think of it this one actually sounds awesome and I kind of want to see someone do it.

\ o / Hype! I've talked to Tiger a bit about this so she knows I have been throwing around an idea for a character. I actually have two ideas, one for a PC and one for an NPC in the event I don't make the sign-ups. But both would be mundane human characters so I'm not worried about them crossing any lines~

Still really unsure if I'm going to participate, but in case I do, I've been brainstorming. I'm liking what I have so far.

My current plan is to: a. Figure out what I'm doing in June, and how much time I'll have. b. Give Beatrice Bizelli a second chance: ntwriters.proboards.com/post/2685004/threadc. Have her needing a break from the big city, where she's getting tired of basically being a gossip columnist. She needs a break from this whole reporting thing. But will she get it? d. Have her either be returning to her hometown, or visiting the town on vacation, depending on if PC or NPC. Step a. is still a huge question mark in my life, so I'm hesitant to say anything at all, but if I post in this thread, then I get appraised of updates faster.

This update is one of the first things I saw today, and suddenly my sort-of-character has turned into a serious attention hog x3 Sketches have been made, I figured out a name, and now she keeps throwing endless character ideas my way. Am I really ready for commitment??

More detailed character profiles will make it easier for Hunty (and anyone else) to draw characters in comics! He forgot to mention point 4, which for me is the main reason to get that map ready and roaring: giving people a chance to align their characters with actual landmarks in the town. Both so as to give ideas for the sort of people who might be needed in the set (charactermaking woes, I know thee well) and so that we don't end up with three crystal shop owners but nobody to run the pub at least up until my enterprising streak gets the better of me again. It's not an obligation, of course, but I figure it'll help, because past games seem to have lumbered a bit too long under all the rudimentary worldbuilding before the plot could kick off. And this way we'll all know where we are in relation to other people's characters >___> I'm mostly in it to draw stuff (because I know my lot in life xD) but I'll do my darndest to keep up with an NPC. Can't very well do a PC, since I know the full story. Plus y'know, time constraints.

Ok, this sounds pretty fun XD No idea on what I would do for a character, but I have time for that when signups start. So I'm in XD

*rises from the dead*
So I gather by the fact that I didn't see a Hunty-map that sign ups aren't open yet... But I'm just going to make the assumption that NPC sign ups are always open so yeah, consider this me signing up xD
I've obviously been rather awol these past few months, so we'll see how I go, but... I'm keen!!
And Miss Markovic is whispering in my ear that teachers are awesome, but I'm hissing back at her that Wrighton is not home, and I dislike the idea of short term teaching stints... I shall wait for some more worldbuilding before thinking further about a character, but I have confidence I'll come up with something fun!!
