In a world of magic and mystery, there are those whose talents lie in both. Those with eyes can see the truth. Those with power can stop evil. And those with the Light can shine through the Darkness.
This time, all of these talents will be needed.
Welcome to Icy Taco Ace Attorneys, PFA's exciting new story project that updates Wednesdays, unless I get busy or lazy. Hurray! SPOILER NOTE: There are likely to be some implied spoilers for the Ace Attorney series within, in some cases moreso than others. All the standard ones we talk about on the Taco all the time anyway, but it probably won't make as much sense if you haven't played the games. XD; There's also spoilers for other Taco stories, but I'll state specifics for each case. Also, between trial days, I was planning on having intermission scenes where other writers and/or their characters can interact with characters involved in the case. I'll probably only do one scene per character per day, but if anyone has any interest in a short RP with one of the characters, let me know. <3 That aside, it's time to begin!

Case 1: Wartorn Turnabout WARNING: This case contains spoilers for the following: - Turnabout Kin-A few passing references to The Case of the Stolen Dice, if that counts "...You. I know who you are, and I know what you've done."
"And I could say the same of you."
"I have spent my life looking for a way to bring you people down. All these innocent people being murdered, and my father... it has to end."
"Sounds like we have a lot in common."
"Don't toy with me. Mark my words, you heartless scum: I will bring you down."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. You people will pay for what you did to my father."
"So it comes to this, then..."
*shing!* *clang!* *clank!* *SHHNKT!*
"Ngh—!"
"Say goodbye, scum ."
"N-no... you can't...!"
"Oh, believe me. I can."
"HEY!"
*shnk* *whud*
"Wait! Get back here!"
...
"He's dead..."
...~*~*~ {August 15th, 4:05PM PFA's Dramatis Personae} "Hey, Polly! Could you come help me with a magic trick?" ...I don't know. This isn't another prank, is it? "No, it's not! Just come here a second!" (Forgive me if I'm a little concerned.) *sighs, setting down his book and walking down the hall to Trucy's room* *as soon as he opens the door* Hey Polly! Catch! What th— *catches what she throws at him* *looks at it* Um... what's this? I don't know! Can you tell? It... looks like a glass orb, but it has a magical aura. Did Kristoph give this to you or something? Hee hee! Nope! *snaps fingers* *the orb appears to shatter in his hand, vanishing into thin air* What th— what did you do?! *giggles gleefully* That orb was made completely of magic, and you couldn't even tell~! ...You made that? With magic? Yeah! I'm working on making stuff out of magic that doesn't look like it was made out of magic. Pretty neat, huh? ...Yeah, no kidding. (Trucy's skill in magic never ceases to amaze me.)"Hey, Justice! There's someone at the door for you!" Hm? Oh. I guess I better go see who that is... *heads back to the living room* *follows* *glances back at them as they enter* Ah, good. Gloria here came to see you. *gestures* Uh, y-yeah... hi. ...Um, hi? (She seems... nervous.) *tilts head* Is there something you needed, miss? Um, s-sort of, yeah. It's just, um... *continues fidgeting nervously* (The way she's fidgeting like that, I can't pay attention to anything else.) Um... is something wrong? *her smile fades* ...You're an attorney, right? (Uh-oh. That can't be good.) Um, yes, I am. Is someone in trouble? *takes a breath* ... *suddenly, very quickly* Okay so my friend Vallen just got arrested on suspicion of murder and he didn't do anything and I don't know what to do! ! Oh no! And he really needs help and I remembered that you were an attorney and so I thought maybe you could help maybe please? I don't know what to do, I'm scared... Hoo boy. Okay, try and calm down. What happened? Who was murdered? I-I don't know... I didn't hear. B-but Vallen's in jail right now, and I don't know what to do. *to Trucy* I think we'd better go talk to this guy and find out what's going on. *nods in agreement* So... will you help? Well, I'll go see if I can figure out what's going on. And then I'll see what I can do to help, okay? ! Th-thank you so much! *tacklehugs Apollo* Thank you! Gah! Um, you're welcome? *tries to subtly urge her to let go* (I haven't even done anything yet...) S-sorry. *lets go* Um, they wouldn't let me talk to him, they said he was in questioning, but maybe they'll let you by because you're an attorney...? I don't know. *adjusts vest* Well, if nothing else, we should be able to get some more information. I guess we should get going, then. Don't worry! We'll do everything we can to help, okay? Th-thanks. I really appreciate it. Come on, Trucy. *walks off* *follows* *waves* Good luck. ... ... So, um... I don't really care, but maybe you want to come in and have a soda or something? Y'know, instead of just standing there on the porch. Um... sure, I guess. *steps inside* ~*~*~ {August 15th, 4:32PM Taco City Detention Center} (So it looks like they just barely finished questioning when we got here. Talk about your timing.) (Well, time to meet this guy and see what's going on.) *walks in* Um, hello? *was standing alone in the cell, apparently lost in thought* *glances back when he hears Trucy's voice* ...? Hello? Um, hi. My name's Apollo Justice, and I'm an attorney. We were hoping we could ask you a few questions? I've already told the other men everything I know. I don't know what else I can say. Yeah, well... we're not the other men. We're here to help you, hopefully. ...? Help me? Yeah! Polly's a defense attorney. He can help prove you innocent! Oh, I see. So you'd like to hear my reasons for being innocent? Um, yeah, basically. (I don't know if this guy completely realizes what's going on here. I suppose that's better than the alternative, though...) So you don't mind if we ask a few questions? No, I'm alright with that. *sits down* What would you like to know? Well, I guess first I'd just like to know what happened. What can you tell us about this incident? Not much. Apparently a man was stabbed through the chest with a sword, and someone thought it was my doing. I am unsure why, as I was nowhere near the area. Which leads me into my next question. If you weren't at the scene of the crime, then where were you? At the AmysGames Offices, speaking with Almodine. Do you have any way to prove that? No. But Almodine would tell you the same, if that helps. (At least he's straightforward. I guess we'll have to ask her about that later.) So what do you know about the victim? Nothing. I have never met him. (Again, straightforward. I wonder how the prosecution is going to pull a motive out of that one... somehow that worries me.) Okay. So do you have any idea who might want to frame you for murdering someone you've never met? *thinks on this* ...Maybe a Tilotarian. A who-ian? The people of Tilotaria. A cruel and heartless people, who will stop at nothing to get what they want. They're currently at war with us. I... what? What didn't you understand? Uh, war? There's a war? Yes. Us versus the Tilotarians. And who's "us," exactly? ... Me, I suppose. ...Um... okay then. (Whatever that's supposed to mean.) So basically these people would have reason to want to get you in trouble. *frowns at this, looking troubled by something* ...Yes. ...These people want you dead, don't they? That would be a good reason to accuse you of murder. ...They... they're going to kill me? (This is exactly what I was trying not to mention. Thanks, Trucy.) Um, yeah. Around here, if someone is found guilty of murder, they're, um... they're put to death. ...! *hastily* But only if they're found guilty. That's why we want to help you. ... ... ... I... I've fought and killed enemies on several occasions, but— Whoa whoa, hey, whoa. Yeah, war is pretty nasty business. It's not my place to judge whatever you've done, nor does it matter right now. All that matters right now is this current murder. ... ...I cannot claim that my sword has never shed blood. I have done things I am not proud of, but this I know: I did not kill that man. *looks at him thoughtfully for a moment* ... ...I believe you. So... you'll prove me innocent? Yeah. I'll try to, at least. Don't worry! Polly's a great lawyer. Because he's really determined. We won't stop until we find the true culprit! *fistpump* ... Thank you, Mr. Justice. *slight smile* You're welcome. *turns to Trucy* Well, I guess the only thing we can do now is search for clues elsewhere. Maybe we should check the AmysGames Offices first? Yeah, probably. We're going to go see what else we can find out. We'll see you later, okay? Wait. So what exactly is the process here going to be? Hm? I mean... what would it take for them to put me to death? Oh. Well, there's going to be a trial tomorrow morning, where we'll determine what happened and whether or not you committed the crime. And if you're found guilty—which hopefully you won't be—that's when they'll even start worrying about the death penalty or anything like that. ...So... there will be a council of sorts? Yeah, basically. And I'll be there arguing on your behalf. I see... that makes sense. Thank you again. Yeah. Anyway, we should get going. Come on, Trucy. *walks off* Just hang in there, okay? *follows Apollo out* ... ... To be continued... (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. --- Profiles Trucy Gramarye - My assistant. She's an energetic magician who has been learning how to do real elemental magic. Vallen Hawkeye - The defendant in this case. Apparently he comes from a world that's currently at war. Gloria Rosebloom - A friend of the defendant. She seems pretty timid.

{August 15th, 5:12PM AmysGames Offices Main Lobby} (Last time I came to this building, it was for a theft case we never really solved. Now here I am for a murder case. Seems like a string of bad luck.) (Oh well. Better get asking around, I guess.) *looks around* *talking to somebody, holding up a picture* ...So you honestly have no idea who this guy is? I don't. I'm sorry... Hmm... well, thanks anyway, pal. *walks over* Hey, Detective. So what's going on? Oh hey, pal! *pockets the picture* Sorry, I'm on an investigation right now. Well, actually, so am I. I'm on the Vallen Hawkeye case. Oh hey, me too, pal! ... ...Wait a minute... That means we're opponents, pal! I'm not supposed to help you! (And here I thought we were friends.) Look, I'll get out of your hair in a second, I just wanted to know what exactly is going on. It's to my understanding someone got murdered? Huh? Oh, yeah. A kid by the name of Ray Venn. *pulls the picture out again and shows him* He was eighteen years old when he was killed. Tragic stuff, pal. Yes... supposedly Vallen attacked the poor man, stabbing him in the chest. They said it was a few hours ago. Yeah. They're not finished with the autopsy report yet, but according to the witness, it was about 2PM. Witness? Yeah, he— Hey! I'm not supposed to tell you that! You're real sly, pal. (Heh. For not helping me, you're being awfully helpful.) So what about the scene of the crime? Where was he murdered? In a back alleyway near the library. But don't go poking around there, pal! There's a police investigation goin' on there! If there's an investigation going on at the scene of the crime, then why are you here? Because I'm checkin' around for alibis, that's what! And guess what, pal? He doesn't have one. Wait, what? No one here can account for the guy's whereabouts at the time of the crime. That means he's got no alibi. But I thought Vallen said he was talking to his friend Almodine? ...He did talk to me, yes, but... I am unsure what time it was. I don't know how to tell time in numbers as they do in this world. And this place doesn't have any surveillance or anything, so there's no way to prove the defendant was here at the time of the murder. I'd like to see you work your way out of that one, pal! ...What about scent trails? Aren't you supposed to be a werewolf or something? Huh? Oh, yeah. That doesn't work, either. And why not? Because the defendant's scent is at the crime scene. ! What?! Yeah, pal! I'd bet my own nose on it! (Well then, sounds like I've got my work cut out for me.) I just don't understand. Why would Vallen attack this poor defenseless man? I want to say he wouldn't, but... I am unsure what to believe. Don't worry, miss. We'll do everything we can to ensure we reach the truth in this case. I guess we'd better leave you to your work, then, detective. Good luck to ya, pal! You'll need it. (Is he always this cocky?) *sighs and turns to Trucy* Well, I don't think we have anything else to look at here at the moment. I guess you're right. Where to now? *starts walking off, mostly to get out of earshot of Gumshoe* I was thinking the scene of the crime. I'm not sure where else we can look at the moment. Okay. Let's go, then! *heads off with Trucy* ~*~*~ {August 15th, 5:36PM Taco City Library Alleyway} *when they arrive, takes a look around* (Looks like there's still some cops around here.) Excuse me sir, miss. This is a police investigation. I'm going to have to ask you to leave... Excuse us, officer, but I'm Vallen Hawkeye's defense attorney. This is the scene of Ray Venn's stabbing, right? ...Oh? Oh! You're that lawyer kid, aren't you? Patrick Justice or something? ...Apollo Justice. And yes. And I'm his assistant, Trucy Wr— um, Trucy. Right, right, I've heard about you two. You're Hawkeye's defense team? Yeah. And I was wondering if we could get a quick look around the area. ...Well, okay, but be careful not to touch anything, alright? *steps aside to let them by* Don't worry, we know the drill. *walks past the officer* Thanks, officer. *follows Apollo* *takes a look around the immediate area* (Let's see...)
(There must be something relevant here. Time to get investigating.)<Examine blood> You think this spot was where the victim was stabbed? When there's a puddle of blood blocked off by police tape, then yeah, it's a pretty good bet that it's where the murder occurred. There's so much blood... the poor guy. I bet it really hurt. From what I've heard, yeah, it does. (With this much blood, some of it might have gotten on the killer's clothes...)<Examine wall> ...Is that a dent in the wall? Yeah, it looks like it. It looks pretty new. Did this occur at the time of the murder? We think so. It's believed there was a struggle between the killer and the victim just before the murder, and at one point the killer's sword collided with the wall. (And it left a dent? That must have been one heck of a swing...)<Examine garbage> (Hm... this garbage can is open...) *peers inside* *there is a lot of garbage, and it stinks* We already looked through the garbage. There's nothing relevant to the case in there. ...It was worth looking. <Examine officers> (These guys are scouring the area for hidden evidence. Fingerprints, DNA... I guess we'll know later if they find anything.) --- ...It doesn't seem like there's a whole lot to look at here. We haven't had much luck finding new evidence, no. Seems this guy did a good job at keeping it clean. (Well, there's nothing immediately visible... but maybe there's something we can't normally see.)--- Ever since I came to Taco City, I've had powers beyond those I have at home. I've always had good eyes, but here... I can literally see the unseen. Auras. Magical energies. Illusions. If it's not visible to normal eyes, chances are I'll be able to see it.
I don't know if it will help any here, but I figure it's worth a shot. Time to focus my mind and open my eyes...--- *as Apollo activates his aura vision, the colors around him dull... and then the unseen emerges* (Alright. Now let's see if anything changes.)<Examine blood> (So apparently freshly spilled blood gives off a little bit of an aura. The more you know, huh?) (The murder was only a few hours ago, so there's still a little bit of an aura. But it's faint, because, well... it was a few hours ago.) (...And I'm just seeing the one aura, so it doesn't look like the victim landed any blows on the killer.) <Examine wall> ...Huh. Hey officer, is the defendant's sword magic? How so? I'm sensing a slight magical residue in this dent in the wall. Oh. ...I'm not sure. I guess we'll have to look into that. (Here's hoping I didn't just incriminate my client by mistake.)<Examine officers> (Every person has a different aura... no two auras are exactly the same. But some are very similar. It's kind of poetic, really.) (...It doesn't look like any of these officers are particularly magically inclined. You'd think that would be more of a priority around here.) <Examine garbage> (Is... is that an aura coming out of the garbage?) *takes a peek* ~You found the +1 Hobo's Shirt of Agility!~ (...People throw away magic items?) *reaches to take it* Hey! I said not to touch anything! Ack! Sorry! *hastily pulls away* (I don't know what just came over me...) <Examine ? ? ?> ...? What's that? What's what? There's... *heads around the corner to take a closer look* There seems to be some kind of magic residue back here. What?! There is?! Yeah. It seems pretty strong, too... (What is this? I don't recognize this aura at all...) Ugh, and I got assigned to this case because there wasn't supposed to be magic involved... HEY! CRAIG! See if you can get a hold of a magic specialist! (Looks like there's a lot more to this case than we thought.)~Mysterious Magic Energy added to the Court Record!~ --- *dismisses aura vision* (I think that's everything we have to see here for now.) Officer, do you know how long until we can get the scans on those magic signatures? That depends on how long it takes us to get a magic specialist down here. Either way, it will probably take a while for us to fully analyze it. Okay, thanks. (I'm guessing that means "we'll know at the trial tomorrow.") It really doesn't feel like we have a lot to go on here. I know what you mean. The killer really didn't leave much evidence behind. Um... the only other thing I can think of to do for now is ask Vallen about those magic signatures. Maybe he'd know what they are. Yeah, I guess we might as well. Let's go. *walks off* *follows* ~*~*~ {August 15th, 5:51PM Taco City Detention Center} ...? (Looks like there's somebody else here already...) ...As I've already said, I don't have anything else I can say about that. You can't hide the truth from us, pal! That's enough, detective. I understand if you don't want to speak about it, but I hope you realize that such matters may have to be brought up at the trial. ... ...I think that is all for now. Let's go, detective. *turns to leave, followed by Gumshoe* (Agfhdjkg) *backs away from the door hastily* (I hope he didn't notice me listening in to that. ...I hope he doesn't hear me thinking this...) *pauses as he exits the room, noticing Apollo* ...Hello, Mr. Justice. Uh... hi, Mr. Edgeworth. Are you the prosecutor for this case, Mr. Edgeworth? Yes, I am. I hear you're the defense team. Uh... *ahem* Yeah, that's us. I see. ...I look forward to meeting you in court, then. Ah, uh, yeah, likewise. ... We should get going, detective. We have work to do. *walks off* You got it, sir! *follows* *expression falls as they leave* (...I have to go against Edgeworth? The most renowned prosecutor in all of California? Oh, why couldn't it have been Gavin... or Payne or someone...) This is great! With Mr. Edgeworth as the prosecutor, we're bound to find the truth of this case. That's what Mr. Edgeworth does best! (I'm glad someone's happy about this.) Anyway, I think we came here to talk to the defendant. Hm? Oh, yeah. Let's go in. *walks in* *follows* Hey, um... How often must I— Hm? Oh, it's you. Um, yeah. Sorry to bother you, but we had a couple of questions we thought you might have the answers to. You can ask, but I can't assure that I have answers. Yeah, well. We were at the scene of the crime earlier and we found a couple of magical signatures there. We thought you might know more about that? I'm not an expert on magic. Almodine might know. ...Not an expert on magic? Do you ever use magic? No. How about your sword? Is there some kind of magic on your sword? Actually, yes, I suppose there is. It was made with enchanted metal, for extra strength. (...Which would be a perfect explanation for why there was a dent made in the wall. Great.) ...But other than that, you don't use magic, right? No. I never trained in magic. How about magic items? Do you use magic items? ...Not usually. Not lately. (Which means it's almost guaranteed that he wasn't the cause of that strange magic energy. That might be my best lead yet.) Alright, thanks. Hopefully that will help. I think that's all our questions for now. See you later, alright? You're welcome. I wish you luck in the council tomorrow. (It's called a "trial," but close enough, I guess.) Don't worry. We'll do everything we can. I only hope it will turn out in my favor. I'm afraid of what may happen otherwise. Don't worry about it, okay? We've got the best attorneys on the case, and we're sure to prove your innocence! ...Thank you. Yeah. So, see you later. *walks off* *follows, leaving the room* Well, I'm excited! I've heard so much about Mr. Edgeworth's prosecutor skills. It's going to be neat seeing him in court! (Yeah, so have I, and that's exactly what makes me nervous.) Either way, I think we have at least a little headway. There's no way that strange magical energy I saw could have been created by the defendant. Hm... but we still don't know what exactly that energy was, do we? No, but I'm guessing we'll find out at the trial tomorrow. Though there's only so many things it could be, and I think it will prove useful to us. I guess we'll see tomorrow, huh? Yeah, I guess so. Come on, let's go home. *heads off* *follows* ~*~*~ {August 15th, 6:15PM PFA's Dramatis Personae} ...And so I told 'em, "well, how much do you got?" ...Do you really eat that much junk food? Yep! Junk food is the bread of life, y'know! ...I think you're misusing that phrase. *walks in, blinks when he notices Gloria is here* Um... hello? Oh! Hi! I ended up staying here a while because, well... ...Because you were worried about your friend, I'm guessing. ...Yeah, I guess. So how did the investigation go? It went pretty well! I think we'll be able to prove your friend innocent no problem! *smiles* You really think so? Um... yeah, of course. (I'm not so sure, but I don't want to say that to her face...) Yeah, no worries! Polly's an awesome lawyer. ...Have you ever even seen me in court, Larry? No, but you're awesome, and you're a lawyer, so that makes you an awesome lawyer! Um... thanks. (I guess I should be glad he thinks I'm "awesome." Maybe.) Anyway, um... I guess I should get going. The others are probably wondering where I am. *shuffles over to the door* Good luck in the trial. Yeah. Will you be watching? Huh? The trial. You can come watch it if you want. Oh. *frowns, pondering this* ...I'll think about it. (I can understand why she wouldn't want to watch. These trials can be pretty intense.) Hey, just try not to worry about it too much, okay? Okay, thanks. ...I should go. *heads off* *sighs* (Everyone is counting on me to get this right, and I have so much evidence stacked up against me. So far my only lead is still a "maybe.") (...Oh well. One way or another, we'll get to the bottom of this and find the truth.)To be continued... (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Mysterious Magic Energy - A mysterious magic signature found at the scene of the crime. The defendant doesn't use magic; what is this? --- Profiles Trucy Gramarye - My assistant. She's an energetic magician who has been learning how to do real elemental magic. Ray Venn - The victim. Stabbed in the chest. He was eighteen years old. Vallen Hawkeye - The defendant in this case. Apparently he comes from a world that's currently at war. Miles Edgeworth - The prosecutor for this case. Probably the most renowned prosecutor in all of Los Angeles. Detective Gumshoe - The detective in charge of this case. Kind of a goofball. Gloria Rosebloom - A friend of the defendant. She seems pretty timid. Almodine Werr - A friend of the defendant. Apparently spoke to Vallen before his arrest, but she's not sure what time it was.

{August 16th, 9:53AM District Courthouse Defendant's Lobby} (Okay, Apollo. You can do this. Breathe in. Breathe out.) Well, today's the big day! Are you ready for this trial, Polly? Ready as I'll ever be, I guess. I still don't get how you can be so excited. Well, we've got both you and Mr. Edgeworth on this case. Mr. Edgeworth looks for the truth, so he's practically on our side! (I don't know about that.) ...Yeah, I guess. ...This trial... when does it start? Hm? Oh. Soon. ...Really soon, actually. We should probably head over to the courtroom now. *as if on cue, a voice is heard* "Trial is starting in a few minutes. All participants, please move to courtroom number two." Yeah. Let's go. *heads off* *follow* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 10:00AM District Courthouse Courtroom No.2} *bangs gavel* Court is now in session for the trial of Vallen Hawkeye. The defense is ready, Your Honor. The prosecution is ready, Your Honor. Good. Mr. Edgeworth, your opening statement, if you please. Thank you, Your Honor. A young man by the name of Ray Venn was found dead in an alleyway outside of the local library, a stab wound through his chest. A witness saw the defendant, Vallen Hawkeye, committing the deed... (Wait, what?!) ...And gave chase. He was later able to catch up with the defendant and call the police. Thank you, Mr. Edgeworth. Mr. Justice? Buh? Your opening statement, please. ...Oh. Um... (I never prepare an opening statement. Guess I'd better wing it...) *puts hands on the desk* My client... he did not commit the crime. I intend to prove it. ... (...Very eloquent, Justice. Bravo.) ...Hm. Very well. Mr. Edgeworth, you have prepared witnesses, correct? Yes, Your Honor. The prosecution would first like to call the detective in charge of this case, Detective Gumshoe, to the stand. Very well. Detective, please come forward. *ambles up to the stand* (Okay, time to get the facts set straight. This could be it.) Please state your name and occupation for the record of the court. Detective Dick Gumshoe, sir! I'm a detective in Los Angeles, but I also work here in Taco City. Detective Gumshoe, please testify as to the details of the crime. Sure thing, sir! -TESTIMONY- What happened The victim was killed at about 2PM by a sword through his chest. The victim and the defendant have no history together that we can find, but we do believe it was the defendant who instigated the fight. There may have been an argument of some sort prior to the attack. Either way, we do believe there was a struggle between the victim and the defendant moments before the stabbing. Seeing the stabbing, the witness called out to the defendant, causing him to flee the scene. The witness gave chase, but the defendant got away. It wasn't until later that he caught up with the defendant again at the AmysGames Offices, where we were called and an arrest was made. --- (...That's it? I feel like we're missing a lot of details.) (Sounds like I'm going to have to press him for more information.) Incidentally, detective, may we see the victim's autopsy report? Yep! Here you go, sir. ~Ray's Autopsy Report added to the Court Record!~ Hm... a question. Has no one requested this young man's revival? As far as I have heard, he is still deceased. (Death in this world is a funny thing. We have the ability to bring people back to life, but it's not a thing we treat lightly. I guess with murders, they made it the policy that if someone requests the victim's revival, the victim agrees to it, and the means are available, then such a revival will take place. I guess even that doesn't always happen, though...) ...Yeah, about that, sir... we've been unable to contact the victim. Unable to contact the victim? You mean... at all?! *deskslam* Detective! Please explain! Whoa! Um, apparently no one has been able to get a hold of the victim. Not even with a spirit medium or the Tomegathericon. Apparently he's "out of range" or something. !! Wait, what?! Detective, do you realize what that means?! Yeah, pal. ...It could be really bad. ...So then... I suppose the charges here may not just be for murder, but... ...Potentially for the destruction of a spirit. Is this correct? We don't know yet, sir. But it's possible. Hm. Mr. Justice? Buh? I mean... Yes, Your Honor? Your cross-examination, please. Yes, Your Honor. (Right, no pressure. So much for focussing.) (Alright, Apollo, time to get back on track. Let's do this.)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- What happened The victim was killed at about 2PM by a sword through his chest. What kind of sword? The defendant's sword, pal. *pulls it out* This one. ...But there's no blood on this sword. The defendant, like any good swordsman, likes to keep his sword clean. It was a good hour before the witness caught up with the defendant after the stabbing, so there would have been plenty of time to clean it. (An hour?!) And before you ask, yes, we can tell that there has been blood on the sword recently. We have tested it. (Well, so much for that. Thanks a lot, Edgeworth.) *crosses arms, thinking* ...? (He seems distracted somehow. What is—)
(Of course, even then...)
(Hm?) ... *shakes head* Go on, detective. (...That was weird.) (Anyway. Moving on.)--- The victim and the defendant have no history together that we can find, but we do believe it was the defendant who instigated the fight. There may have been an argument of some sort prior to the attack. <Press> What sort of argument? I can't imagine they'd have much to argue about if they never met. A "hello" that went nasty, maybe? It can happen, pal. It is also possible the defendant mistook Mr. Venn for someone else. One of his enemies, perhaps. ...So you think he attacked Ray out of a misunderstanding? Vallen Hawkeye has seen war, you realize. It is to my understanding that war-related stress can leave one a bit... delusional. (So... you're asserting that my client has PTSD.) Regardless, that is a matter to be investigated further at another time. For now, let's continue with the testimony. --- Either way, we do believe there was a struggle between the victim and the defendant moments before the stabbing. What do you mean by that? There are signs that the defendant's sword collided with the back wall behind the victim at one point. (As in, that mark in the wall next to where Ray Venn was stabbed.) ...Okay. What about magic? Hm? Oh, the defendant's sword has an enchantment on it for increased strength. Supposed to puncture armor or somethin'. That's how it made a dent in the wall. Okay, but that's not what I meant. I meant, did either the defendant or the victim use magic? No, pal. Neither of them are trained in magic. Not according to their profiles, anyway. ...Really now? That's interesting. Can you add that to your testimony? Excuse me, Mr. Justice. Is this relevant to the case at hand? Yes, Your Honor. I believe it is. ...Hm. Very well, then. Detective Gumshoe, please append this information about the struggle between the victim and the killer to your testimony. Sure thing, sir! ~A new piece of testimony is added~ --- The defendant's sword collided with the wall behind the victim, leaving a mark. Neither of them use magic, see, so it was an entirely physical battle. And then... the stabbing. <Press> You say it was a "struggle," but it sounds like the killer did most of the battling. Did Ray ever fight back? ...Not that we know of, pal. We didn't find any weapons in Mr. Venn's possession. ...I guess that would make it more of an "attack"? Phrasing aside, it has not been confirmed whether or not the victim ever struck his attacker. Yeah, sir. At the very least, he must have avoided the defendant's attacks at least once for there to be a dent on the wall. (...Fair enough, I guess. Moving on, then.) (Enough stalling, Apollo. The victim's lack of weapon isn't the real issue here. Time to hit them with some evidence!)--- Seeing the stabbing, the witness called out to the defendant, causing him to flee the scene. The witness gave chase, but the defendant got away. <Press> The killer fled the scene as soon as he saw the witness? Apparently. Just ran and left Mr. Venn to bleed to death. Did the killer, I don't know, have any blood on his clothes or anything? ...I dunno, pal. You'd have to ask the witness about that. We will get to speak with the witness in person later. Please continue with your testimony, detective. (I guess I'm just going to have to wait, then.)--- It wasn't until later that he caught up with the defendant again at the AmysGames Offices, where we were called and an arrest was made. <Press> So the killer fled all the way from the library to the AmysGames Offices? That's got to be at least a twenty minute walk. Yeah, but if you were running the whole time, it would probably be like... ten minutes! There was at least an hour before the witness caught up with the defendant. I don't think the exact time he took to get there is all that relevant. ...A twenty minute walk and it took him an hour? As the detective briefly mentioned, he lost track of the defendant for a while before catching up with him again. But you can ask him about that yourself later. (Hmph. Maybe I will, then.)--- (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Mysterious Magic Energy - A mysterious magic signature found at the scene of the crime. The defendant doesn't use magic; what is this? Ray's Autopsy Report - Died at around 2PM, August 15th. COD: Loss of blood due to stab wound in chest. Vallen's Sword - The defendant's sword. Made with enchanted metal for extra strength. --- <Present Evidence> ...Neither of them use magic, see, so it was an entirely physical battle. I find a rather large flaw with this statement, detective! Huh? What is it, pal? I'm sure you've been told, detective, but there was a particularly strong magic residue found near the scene of the crime. Now you yourself stated that neither the defendant nor the victim use magic at all. So if I may ask... How the heck did that get there?! *startled murmurs from the crowd* *shakes his head* (...What? That wasn't good enough?) ...You make an interesting point, Mr. Justice, but perhaps you should research your evidence more thoroughly before you make any claims based on it. I'm afraid this magic energy you mention does not point away from your client, but rather, points directly to him. (...You have got to be kidding me.) Detective? Yes, sir? Do you think you could tell us about this magical residue Mr. Justice mentions? *salutes* No problem, sir! -TESTIMONY- Mysterious Magic Residue As Mr. Justice mentions, there was a magic residue discovered near the scene of the crime. Just around the corner from the attack, actually. When this was found, it was studied extensively by magic specialists. Apparently the residue is what was left behind of a portal. According to the records, portal technology is really popular in the world the defendant comes from. Like, the defendant himself uses a device that lets him travel around pretty regularly. And according to the specialists, this portal was opened shortly after the murder occurred. Which means the portal was opened, by the defendant, to flee the scene of the crime. --- ... So much for that argument, huh? This isn't over yet, Trucy. There's a hole in that testimony somewhere, and I'm sure of it. This is a very perplexing turn of events. Well, Mr. Justice, please continue with your cross-examination. Yes, Your Honor. (Something about this testimony feels off. Somehow, I need to find out why.) (Watch out, detective. Here comes Justice!)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- Mysterious Magic Residue As Mr. Justice mentions, there was a magic residue discovered near the scene of the crime. Just around the corner from the attack, actually. <Press> ... ...You wanted to say something, Mr. Justice? (...I was the one who discovered that in the first place, but maybe I shouldn't mention that.) Nevermind. Go on, detective. Well... --- When this was found, it was studied extensively by magic specialists. Apparently the residue is what was left behind of a portal. <Press> How could they tell it was a portal? They are magic specialists. I believe it is safe to say they know what the remnants of a portal look like. (Yes, Edgeworth. Just go on and insult my intelligence. Really, I don't mind.) Please go on, detective. --- According to the records, portal technology is really popular in the world the defendant comes from. Like, the defendant himself uses a device that lets him travel around pretty regularly. ...What?! Don't ask me, pal. PFA has those records locked up pretty tight at the moment. That's as much as I know. Okay, whatever. I don't care about the records, I just want to see this apparent portal-making device you're talking about. Can't do that, either. Sorry, pal. What? Why not? We don't know where the device is. The defendant didn't have it on him for the arrest and we don't know where he keeps it. What? There's a piece of evidence gone missing? Never found, technically. We've searched extensively for it, but to no avail. Hmm. Well, it sounds like a crucial piece of evidence to me, but until it is found, I suppose there isn't much we can do about it. Well, see what you can do about finding this device. For now, let us continue. Yes, Your Honor. (The one piece of evidence that's killing me and we don't even have it.) *glances at Edgeworth* *in thought* (...He seems troubled. I wonder—)
(...Of course... without the evidence, is it really proof?)
(Hm?) ... *shakes head and looks back up at Gumshoe* As you were saying, detective. (...Hm. An interesting thought. I wonder...) *also looks back up at Gumshoe* So yeah, anyway, there was a portal... --- And according to the specialists, this portal was opened shortly after the murder occurred. Which means the portal was opened, by the defendant, to flee the scene of the crime. Where did this portal lead to? I dunno, pal. Apparently they can only tell that a portal was opened there, and not where it went. The only way to know for sure where it went would be to find its match. Which, I'll note, has not been found as of yet. So it's not at, say, the AmysGames Offices? Not so far as we can tell, no. However, all that means is that he didn't teleport directly to the AmysGames Offices. As in, perhaps he stopped elsewhere and walked the rest of the way. ...Wouldn't that be a little tedious? Not if you were trying to throw someone off your trail. ...I guess. Hm... it bothers me that the portal's exit point has yet to be located. I feel it could tell us much about this case. But I suppose in absence of it, there is little we can do. We are doing our best to find it, Your Honor, but unfortunately it has proven a harder ordeal than it would seem. But yes, perhaps it is best we continue for now. (I don't know, it still seems odd to me...) *crosses arms, in thought* (...I wonder what's on his mi—)
(...Perhaps we're looking in the wrong place...)
(Hm?) ... *shakes head* (...You know, I wonder...)--- (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Portal Residue - A mysterious magic signature found at the scene of the crime. Apparently it's the remnants of a portal that was opened. It is unknown where it led to. Ray's Autopsy Report - Died at around 2PM, August 15th. COD: Loss of blood due to stab wound in chest. Vallen's Sword - The defendant's sword. Made with enchanted metal for extra strength. Mysterious Portal Device - A device the defendant apparently owns which can open portals. Has not been found. --- ...Okay. Hold on. I just need to say something here. ...You're countering my evidence with evidence you haven't even found yet. No portal device, no other portal... Hey! Just because we haven't found it yet doesn't mean it doesn't exist! Hm... I think I have to agree with Mr. Justice on this one. While I understand the difficulty of finding these particular pieces of evidence, I cannot allow them to be counted as evidence until I have seen them for myself. ...My apologies, Your Honor. We are working as best we can. (Haha! A point for Justice!) ...However, it is also not valid evidence for the defense either at this point. (...Or not.) For now, I would suggest simply to proceed with the trial as scheduled. We can discuss this evidence again when it is found. Very well. Detective, anything else to report? No, sir. I think we've pretty much covered everything for now. Alright then. Detective, you may be dismissed. *salutes and steps down* Now, as has been mentioned, there was a witness at the scene of the crime who witnessed the murder take place. At this time, the prosecution would like to call this man forward... (Alright, Apollo. Your only evidence may be up in the air, but at least you're still in the game.) (This next testimony can make or break everything. Now let's make it count.)To be continued...

*moments later, a witness steps up to the stand* (Oh no. This guy?) Good day, everyone. (Last time I had to deal with this guy, it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. He was pretty upset then, but now he seems a lot more... calm. ...Somehow that's even more worrying.) Yes. Please state your name and occupation for the record of the court. *pauses* ...Full name? Preferably, yes. ...Very well. *sighs* ...Sanry Fowler. I manage a weapons shop in Chekiku City, Curissya. (...He doesn't seem especially glad to say that, though.) Thank you. Mr. Fowler, would you— Please don't call me that. Sanry is fine. ...Very well, then. *ahem* Mr. Sanry, would you please testify as to what you saw regarding this incident? Most certainly. (And suddenly he reverts back to that eerie smile. Talk about your moodswings.) (Okay, nevermind that, Apollo. Let's see what he has to say...)-TESTIMONY- What I saw Yes, let's see. At about 2PM, I was on my way to visit the library in order to do some studies on the culture here. Of course, on my way there, I heard quite a ruckus from the back alley. When I looked to see who it was, I saw that boy... Hawkeye, was it? With his sword in that poor man's chest. I called out to him, at which point he fled the scene. Unfortunately, I did not see where he went. I saw that the man's wound went deep. It was definitely a fatal blow. It wasn't until later that I found Vallen Hawkeye again at the AmysGames Offices. I called him out for the attack, and an arrest was made. --- *smiles again* ...That is all. I hope that was acceptable? Yes, very good, thank you. (I'm pretty sure it's my job to decide if that was an acceptable testimony or not, Edgeworth.) A very precise testimony, indeed. Mr. Justice, your cross-examination, if you please. Yes, Your Honor. (Alright, here goes nothing...)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- What I saw Yes, let's see. At about 2PM, I was on my way to visit the library in order to do some studies on the culture here. <Press> What exactly were you studying? I don't see how that is relevant. ...It could be. Mr. Justice, are you absolutely certain this question has any bearing on the case at hand? ...No, Your Honor. I see. Please refrain from trivial questions in your cross-examination, Mr. Justice. (Sigh.) Yes, Your Honor. --- Of course, on my way there, I heard quite a ruckus from the back alley. When I looked to see who it was, I saw that boy... Hawkeye, was it? With his sword in that poor man's chest. You seem hesitant there. Was he or was he not Vallen Hawkeye? I saw Vallen Hawkeye. My hesitance was because I was uncertain of his name. But I know who he is. He is General Donovan's current enemy. ...Who? The leader of the opposing army in the war the defendant is a part of. It is safe to assume Mr. Sanry is talking about the defendant. Yes. I do well recognize that boy. Okay, okay. ...But you're absolutely sure it was him? Did you see his face? *thinks on this* ...Not up close, no. But I am certain that I saw the defendant sitting in that chair over there. *absently touches his bracelet* (Interesting. Are you sure what you saw is what is real, Mr. Fowler?)~A new piece of testimony is added~ --- I did not see him up close, but I am certain that I saw the defendant. <Press> You're certain you saw the defendant? Isn't that what I said? Well, yes, but if you didn't see him up close, how are you sure it was the defendant? I was not face-to-face with him, no. But I was close enough to see that he was the defendant. I know what he looks like. Yeah, but if you didn't see his face, how do you know for sure? I saw his face, just not up close. He definitely appeared to be the defendant. Well, how do you know that— Mr. Justice, please try not to badger the witness. ...Yes, Your Honor. (There's something off about this, I just know it...)--- I called out to him, at which point he fled the scene. Unfortunately, I did not see where he went. <Press> What exactly do you mean when you say you "didn't see where he went"? I saw him turn the corner, and the next thing I knew, he was gone. Otherwise, I likely would have caught him sooner. ...You didn't see him at all after he turned the corner? Not even to, say, enter a portal or something? A portal? ...I didn't notice a portal. ...Really? Not at all? Don't portals usually make some sort of sound when they appear and disappear? They tend to give off pretty strong auras, too. I would think you would detect it someh— *clears throat, interrupting* I was momentarily distracted by a dying young man. If a portal of some sort opened, I didn't notice. Not all portals are immediately noticeable, Mr. Justice. Particularly when you are distracted. Yes, precisely. That would make sense, I guess... (Okay, okay, I get the point.) I suppose it would explain why I lost track of him, however. I expected I would easily be able to catch up to him, so I took a moment to examine the victim to see if he would be alright. However... --- I saw that the man's wound went deep. It was definitely a fatal blow. <Press> ... (...You know, maybe I don't want to know how he would know what a fatal wound looks like.) ...Yes, Mr. Justice? Um... blood. Yeah. There was a lot of blood at the scene of the crime. Do you know if any of it got on the killer's clothes? ...I didn't notice. I don't believe so. (Well, so much for that.) ...Okay then. Go on, please. Yes, well... --- It wasn't until later that I found Vallen Hawkeye again at the AmysGames Offices. I called him out for the attack, and an arrest was made. <Press> How much later was this? About an hour later. I searched around for a while before I decided to go back to the Offices, where I found him speaking with his friend. It's about a twenty minute walk from the library to the AmysGames Offices, right? So you searched for about forty minutes? I would presume so, yes. ...I see. (Not much to say to that.)--- <Perceive> (People who are hiding the truth often have subtle, subconscious "tells"... it's time to put these eyes of mine to work.) *reaches over and touches his bracelet as he focuses* *everything else in Apollo's vision seems to fade away as he focuses all his attention on Sanry* I did not see him up close...
...but I am certain that I saw the defendant. Mr. Fowler, I notice— Sanry. ...Mr. Sanry. I notice something interesting about your testimony just now. You tensed for a moment before saying that you "saw" my client. I... what? In fact, it's interesting... that's the only thing you've said. That you "saw" the defendant. Because that's the only thing you're sure of, isn't it? ...I'm not sure what you mean. What is seen by the naked eye isn't always reliable, and isn't always the truth. There are ways to fool the eyes. Just ask my assistant, Trucy. ~ But you're already aware of that, right? ... *glares* What are you insinuating, Mr. Justice? I'm insinuating that you're hesitant to say that you did anything other than "see" the defendant. Because you didn't. You didn't hear him speak. You didn't touch him. You didn't "sense" him in any way other than sight. So how do you know it was the defendant at all?! ...! *muttermutter* *ahem* ...Mr. Justice, I appreciate your line of thought, but might I ask where you're going with this? I agree. I'm intrigued by your thought process, but I'm unsure what you're trying to say. All I'm saying is it's not out of the question for someone to have disguised themselves as the defendant in order to throw us off the trail. That's a concept you're familiar with, right, Mr. Edgeworth? *more mutters from the crowd* ... *glares* (You did NOT just go there.) ! (Oh crud. I really shouldn't have said that.) I, um... I'm just saying it's kind of possible, maybe? What you say has dangerous implications, Mr. Justice. For us as well as your client. I don't necessarily mean it was Revenge or anything, I'm just saying— *suddenly, voices echo through Apollo's mind* Revenge?! Did he just say Revenge?!Is he serious? You did not just say that... Gah! *clutches head* (What the heck?!)
(Polly?!) Mr. Justice? Are you quite alright? (He seems distressed all of the sudden.)
(...Is he...?)
(Okay, Apollo. Calm down. Calm down...) *slowly starts to relax, and in turn the voices fade away* ...Yeah. I'm fine, Your Honor. Are you sure? You seem quite distressed. Yes, I'm fine. Now where were we? *holding two fingers to his temple, which appear to be glowing with a faint aura* ...We were discussing the possibility of the attacker being an impostor. *notices this, blinks* Um... yeah. (What is he doing?) ...If you're sure you're alright, Mr. Justice... Yes. Fine. ...Then I must say you bring up an interesting point. That sounds like it could be a point worth investigating. However, I would like to hear the witness' thoughts on the matter first. Mr. Fowler, what do you think of this claim? *sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose as he collects his thoughts* ...Don't call me that, I beg of you. My apologies, Mr. Sanry. Your thoughts? ... ... ... You bring up an interesting argument, Mr. Justice. -TESTIMONY- Sanry's thoughts ...You are correct, Mr. Justice. I am indeed familiar with the concept of illusions. I also happen to be aware that in the hands of a master, such illusions can be highly convincing. I suppose some part of me doubted my sight, because yes... I did not do more than see him. However, no disguise is perfect. Even a master can't hide everything. If it truly was an impostor, there would be some way to determine this. I detected none... and so far as I can tell, neither have you. So unless you can show me something beyond mere conjecture, I refuse to believe that it is was not Vallen Hawkeye that I saw. --- (Hoboy. Now there's the this guy I remember.) ...So... you're saying you do not believe it was an illusion? Not without further proof, no. Hm... I am unsure what to think. Mr. Justice? What have you to say? ...I think I can prove it, Mr. Sanry. If you'll give me the chance. Really? Go on, then. I would love to hear what you have to say. (Don't glare at me like that, please. It's creepy.) ... *watching this* ...Well then, Mr. Justice. Your... cross-examination, I suppose? *puts hands on desk* (Alright, Apollo. Let's do this.)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- Sanry's thoughts ...You are correct, Mr. Justice. I am indeed familiar with the concept of illusions. I also happen to be aware that in the hands of a master, such illusions can be highly convincing. <Press> ...When you say "highly convincing," what exactly are we talking here? Have you heard of false auras, Mr. Justice? ... What? I have heard of particularly talented illusionists who learned to make their aura appear, to those who can detect such things, different than their own. W-what?! Are you serious?! One can't fully alter their own aura, of course. That is impossible. And I imagine imitating someone else's aura would be outrageously difficult. However, making it immediately appear as though you have an aura other than your own is theoretically possible... if unlikely. (Well, that's nice to know...) Huh. I wonder how you would do that? I'm guessing you'd have to mask your own aura, and then somehow project something else... You can ponder over that later, Trucy.--- I suppose some part of me doubted my sight, because yes... I did not do more than see him. However, no disguise is perfect. Even a master can't hide everything. <Press> What exactly would you say can't be hidden? Really? You ask me that, after so confidently saying you could prove to me it was an illusion? ...Just asking. If you can prove it to me, then prove it. --- If it truly was an impostor, there would be some way to determine this. I detected none... and so far as I can tell, neither have you. <Press> What do you suppose you or I would have "detected" to tell it was an impostor? Really? You ask me that, after so confidently saying you could prove to me it was an illusion? ...Just asking. If you can prove it to me, then prove it. --- So unless you can show me something beyond mere conjecture, I refuse to believe that it is was not Vallen Hawkeye that I saw. <Press> I believe it wasn't Vallen Hawkeye! Then prove it already. Go on, I am waiting. (...Maybe I was trying to add suspense.) Mr. Justice... if you have something to say, I think it would be best you didn't keep us waiting. (Bleh.) (Okay, Apollo, enough stalling. It's time to present some evidence!)--- (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Apparently spoke to Vallen before his arrest, but she's not sure what time it was. Sanry Fowler - Creepy guy who lives at the AmysGames Offices. Witness to the crime. --- <Present Evidence> I believe I can prove it! And I can prove it right now! Is that so? Then show me. You have mentioned that no disguise is perfect. There will always be something just a little bit off. And as anyone who knows anything about auras would know, one of those things is magical energies. Is this correct, Mr. Sanry? ...One can attempt to disguise an aura, yes, but one can never hide it completely. This is correct. Now we know there are points of this case that haven't been investigated thoroughly. As far as I can tell, the magic energies at the scene of the crime is one of these points. Is this correct, Mr. Edgeworth? ...Yes, that is so. We have had little reason to look into it until you brought it up. And there are many pieces of evidence we don't have. The device that created the portal, for example. However, there is one piece of evidence we do have. And, with the court's permission, I would like to test this piece of evidence myself. ...I suppose so. What piece of evidence would this be? This one, Your Honor. The defendant's sword. This is the sword the defendant used against the victim in the attack, right, Mr. Sanry? ...I do believe so, yes. That sword has been tested against the energy found at the scene of the crime. The magical energies are the same! Really? Are you sure? ... (The magic specialists assured me the slight differences were normal...) *seems pleased by this* (Slight differences, huh?)
(...I knew it. Stay out my thoughts, Mr. Justice.) ! (Oh crud. I was mirroring Edgeworth, wasn't I?) ...Mr. Edgeworth? *holds two fingers to his temple, glowing a bit more strongly this time* ...There were minor differences in the readings of the two energies, but the specialists assured me that slight fluctuations are normal. *ahem* ...Yes. Well, given the circumstances, I think it's worth double-checking. Hm... it seems reasonable, however, I am curious what you meant when you said you wished to "test it yourself." I, um... I can see auras, Your Honor. Oh? I see. I suppose there is no harm in trying it, then. I'll allow it. *the bailiff brings out the sword for Apollo to examine* (Alright, Apollo. You've always been able to see through illusions... if there's some kind of trickery going on, hopefully you'll be able to see through it.) *concentrates* ... *the colors in Apollo's vision dull, and the vibrant colors of people's auras emerge... but most importantly, that of the sword* ... It's purple. ...Purple? What does purple mean? ...It means this sword's aura is purple. Which is interesting, because the aura I saw at the scene of the crime... ...was blue! *muttermutter* What?! So the auras aren't the same?! ...Fascinating. Auras on enchanted items are not known to change color. So yes. Assuming Mr. Justice tells the truth, it is safe to assume that this sword did not leave that mark. ...I highly doubt Mr. Justice would be so imprudent as to purposefully mislead us in a court of law. (Thanks for the vote of confidence, Edgeworth.) ...I suppose it would explain a lot. There was indeed blood found on the defendant's sword, but it was never confirmed whether or not any of the blood found belonged to the victim... However, I must point out that is possible the defendant has more than one sword. It is possible he used a different one for the attack than the one he had on him at the time of his arrest. *dismisses aura vision* Really? Because that seems pretty far-fetched to me. Do you own two nearly identical swords with an almost identical enchantment, Mr. Edgeworth? ...Er. No, I do not. I would wager a sword of that make is quite rare, to boot. In my experience, barring world differences I am unaware of, enchanted metal of that kind is not easy to come by, nor to create. I would sooner assume a faithful replica of such a sword is counterfeit... ...One intended to fool others into thinking it were real. So congratulations, Mr. Justice. This would be a very good reason for me to doubt what I saw. *more shocked muttering from the crowd* Your Honor! I believe it is safe to say there are too many holes in this case to declare a verdict at this time. The defense requests extra time to investigate this case further! I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Justice. There is too much missing evidence... too many doubts to safely say Vallen Hawkeye is or is not guilty of this crime. This court is adjourned until tomorrow morning, to allow both the prosecution and the defense time to gather more evidence. *bangs gavel* To be continued...

((Special thanks to Omni for helping with the images in this part)) {August 16th, 12:23PM Frost & Co. Law Offices Lunch Room} You did great in court today, Polly! Way to go! Yeah, especially for having no evidence. At least it turned out the prosecution didn't have much, either. *munches on a sandwich* Yeah, speaking of that, what do you think we should investigate next? *noms a chip* *swallows* ...Well, first we'd probably better talk to Vallen. I have a few questions I'd like to ask him. Other than that... I'm not sure. What do you think? I'd really like to know where that portal went to. And what happened to the counterfeit sword. And... lots of stuff, really. But I don't know where we'd look for that. Yeah, me neither. It seems like they could be just about anywhere. Heck, they might not even be in Taco City. I'm mostly just hoping they're not in the Void... ...The portal didn't look like a Void portal, did it? No. It was... weird. It was like... well, it looked like a mix of several elements, but there was something weird about it. I don't know how to explain it. ...Something... weird? Weird like how? I don't know. Maybe it's just weird elements from another world or something. Whatever it was, it probably wasn't a Void portal, but... this does seem like the kind of thing Revenge would do. ... ...Anyway, yeah. I guess we'd better get down to the detention center. *stands up, throwing away an empty lunch bag* Come on, Trucy. *heads off* *follows* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 12:45PM Taco City Detention Center} *walks in* ...Um, hey there. *looks back at them* ? Oh, hello. You did well in the trial this morning. ...Though I wish I didn't have to come back here another day. I do not know how long I can stay here. Don't worry, we're working as fast as we can. I'd just like to ask a few questions, if that's alright. ...Is it about the device that detective man mentioned? Well... yeah, that's one of them. Do you really have something like that? ...Not... exactly. It does exist, but it is not mine. It is kept by a man named Avrum. He has just allowed me use of it when needed. Do you think he'd let us look at it for a moment? If the magic energy doesn't match the portal, then— I wouldn't think so. He has been guarding it very carefully since the war started... it is a precious artifact, and we do not want the Tilotarians getting a hold of it. *sigh* ...It doesn't matter either way. It would be impossible. What would be impossible? I'm not allowed to discuss details, but... the artifact cannot open portals in this world. ...Would it be asking for too many details if I asked why not? Because this world is different. It uses different rules. ...I'm not sure what more I can say on the matter. (Well, that's definitely true. This world is pretty weird.) (I've never heard of magic that stops working in Taco City before, though...) ...I guess I'll have to take your word for it. Another question, then. ...Not sure how to ask this. Have you ever had any run-ins with a spirit named Revenge? A... spirit? A personification, technically. Basically he embodies vengeance itself. ...I... don't understand. *sigh* ...He is vengeance. The desire for revenge. That little voice in the back of your head that tells you to do stupid things when you're angry at someone. Here, that little voice takes the form of a demon hound named Revenge Vendetta, and he tends to spend a lot of time tormenting those who've ever had experiences with him. ...! Wh-what?! Yeah. It's just he did something pretty similar to this recently, so I'm just curious if he'd have anything to do with you. ...This... spirit. You imply he is aware of all vengeance? Even if it did not occur in this world? Yeah. He is vengeance, so he exists in all worlds in some form or another... however that works, exactly. I'm not really sure. ... ... ... (...I'm guessing that means yes. Well then.) ...Look, you don't have to tell me about anything, I'm just... throwing out the possibility. I kind of doubt he was the actual killer here, but it has happened before, so... ...Vengeance itself taking my form is a terrifying thought. I sincerely hope that isn't true. Yeah, me too. It would be, uh... bad. I guess it's worth looking into, though. Anyway, different topic. You don't... actually have two nearly identical copies of the same sword, do you? *sigh* ...No, I don't. As far as I know, mine is the only sword of that model. (Except for, apparently, the counterfeit one.) Alright, thanks. That's nice to know. Um, not much else I can think of to ask you. Trucy? Hm... do you have any enemies who specialize in illusions, maybe? ...Illusions... well, I know there have been Tilotarian illusionists in the past, so it is possible. It's not a common specialization, though. I guess that's something to keep in mind. I'm not sure what more we have to talk about at the moment, honestly. Yeah, me neither. Maybe we could check out the scene of the crime again? Maybe the police have found something new. Yeah, I guess it's worth a try. Maybe we could at least get some ideas if we take another look at it. Mm. Good luck to you both. Don't worry! We'll figure things out. Just hang in there, okay? ...Thank you. Let's go. *walks off* *also* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 1:01PM Taco City Library Alleyway} *walks in, looking around* (There seem to be a lot of people around today.) ...Sorry, sir, wish I knew more. But that's all I've got. Hm... well, do you have any records we can look at, maybe? Probably. You'd have to ask Rita about that, though. (I wonder what they're talking about?) Excuse me, Mr. Justice, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave. There's a police investigation going on right now. Oh! Uh, right. Sorry. *sidles away* *once they're out of earshot* It sounds like they've found some new evidence or something? New witnesses, it looks like. Nice to know, I guess. But what do we do now? Hmm... Hey! I wonder if they'd let us go into the library! ...Why the library? The alleyway is behind the library, so I bet the witnesses were from the library! Come on, let's check it out! *dashes off* What th— wait, Trucy! *hurries after her* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 1:06PM Taco City Library Entryway} *walks in* (...It was a lot easier to get into the library than I thought it would be. There's hardly any police around. ...There's hardly anybody around, for that matter.) Well, come on, Polly! Let's take a look around! Maybe there's new evidence here! (The murder didn't happen in the library, Trucy.) (...Though I guess the killer could have been here prior to the murder or something? I guess it's worth a look around.)<Examine shelves> (The shelves are lined with thousands of books. There's also some Writer scrolls and a lot of other stuff.) (That reminds me, I have a book to return soon...) Hey, Polly! I just had a thought! What if the murderer checked out a book from here? ...I suppose it's possible. What kind of books would a murderer check out? I don't know, maybe something like "Illusions 101"! Or "How to Get Blood Out of Your Clothes, by Killy McMurder"! (...I think I'd be more worried if the library stocked that second book in the first place.) Uh, I'm guessing if there were illusions involved, then this guy would already have been an illusionist for a long time. Oh, right. Still, you never know. ...Worth looking into, I guess. <Examine computers> (This is where you can look up what books are available.) (We're not checking out books at the moment, though. Right now we're checking out murders.) <Examine posters> (There's posters on the wall encouraging reading.) ..."School is cool with books as your tool." Kind of a catchy slogan. Hm. What if there was a book that doubled as a screwdriver? Or a hammer! Those are tools. It's supposed to be metaphorical, Trucy. Yeah, but imagine how handy that would be! Fix your table while reading about how to fix your table, all with the same tool! ...I'd think that would be a little unwieldy. You just don't have enough imagination! Uh-huh. (...You know, looking at that mascot, he kind of reminds me of Larry. That's a scary thought.) <Talk to library assistant> Hello, Mr. Justice! Here to return a book? Borrow a new one? (Ms. Rita Book, the library assistant. I guess I've been here enough that she recognizes me.) No, not today. Actually, we're investigating a murder right now. ...The one that happened just near here? In the back alley? Uh, yeah. I take it you've heard about it? Yes, of course... I pass by the crime scene on my way home. That poor boy. It's so horrific... Uh, yeah. Do you happen to know much about it? Mostly what I heard, and what I've seen of the crime scene. That poor boy was stabbed, apparently by someone named Vallen Hawkeye? And there's so much blood... Yeah, well, we're here trying to prove it wasn't Vallen Hawkeye, but it doesn't sound like you know much about that. I don't, sorry. I know more about the victim than the one they arrested. The victim, huh? What do you know about the victim? Well, he came here to the library yesterday, just before he died. (Really now? This sounds important.) Did he check out anything? He didn't check out any books, no. But he did want to look at some old records... Records? What kind of records? ... --- {FLASHBACK August 15th, 1:46PM} Hello, sir! May I help you? ...Yeah. I need to look through your records. Of course! What is it that you're looking for? ...I need to prove that my father was innocent. I... what? Court records. You keep old court records in this building, right? I want to look at one of them. *adjusts glasses* Um... y-yes, of course. I can show you where they are. Thanks. I need to finally clear this up. Yes, yes, of course... *leads the way* --- What? His... father? I'm not sure. But if he was looking it up just moments before he was murdered, I wonder if it may be related somehow... ...Is there a chance we could get a look at these records, too? ...Possibly? I'm not sure which file he looked at, exactly, but I could show you where the records room is. Sounds helpful. Thanks. *leads the way* ...Well, come on, Trucy. *follows* *also* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 1:15PM Taco City Library Court Records Room} Well, this is the records room. I hope you can find what you're looking for on your own? I should get back to my desk. Yeah, I think so. Thanks, Ms. Book. You're welcome! Let me know if you need anything, okay? *walks off* *waves* ... Well, I guess we should get looking. These... these are just the records of local cases, aren't they? I think so, yeah. *starts looking through the files* There sure are a lot of these, though... some of these even predate the founding of Taco City, looks like. I didn't expect there to be this many. It's going to take forever to find the right one... They seem to be sorted in chronological order. Which at least narrows it down to the past eighteen years, if we're looking for the victim's dad. ...Barring time travel, I guess. Eighteen years of cases is still a lot of cases, even for a small city like this one. Isn't there any other way to narrow it down? (If there were a way to tell which file the victim took out... hm...) *looks around the room* ...Say, do you think they'd let us look at the security tapes? The security tapes? What for? Well, if the footage shows the victim looking at the file, then we'll be able to prove that he was here before the murder. Also, if it shows which shelf he went to to get the file... ...Then we'd know where the file is! Good thinking, Polly! We should ask them! (I suppose there's not much else we can do.) *heads out to find the library security* ~*~*~ {August 16th, 1:22PM Taco City Library Surveillance Room} Here we are, Mr. Justice. Anything in particular you're looking for? (I'm surprised they let us in so easily.) Uh, yeah. I want to see yesterday's footage of the court records room, shortly before 2PM. The court records room? Let's see... *the security officer searches through the footage for a moment, and before long, the image comes up* There you go, sir. (August 15th at 1:50PM... yep, this definitely proves the victim was here before the murder.) Alright, thanks. Do you think we could get a copy of this footage? We might need it for the trial tomorrow. Of course. Let me find a blank tape. *wanders off* *looks at the footage thoughtfully* Hm... the middle shelf, is it? Looks like. And in clear view of the security camera, thankfully. ...Say, Trucy, maybe you can go see if you can find that case file while I wait here for the officer? No problem! *scurries off* (Here's hoping this file actually tells us something important. There's just something suspicious about the victim looking for files on an old case just a few minutes before he was murdered...) *returns with a tape in hand* How much of the footage will you need? Uh, not a lot. Probably just the part where the victim *gestures to the image of Ray on the screen* is there. Alright, can do. *starts setting it up* *meanwhile, Apollo's cell phone goes off* ...? *picks it up* Hello? "Hey Polly, you can see me on the camera, right?" ... *looks up* *Trucy can be seen on one of the screens, waving at the camera* ...Um, yeah? "Good! Can you direct me to which file I want?" Um... *glances back and forth between the two screens* ...Keep going forward. It's right in the middle. A little further... there. Now try the second shelf. "Just below the top shelf, right?" Yeah. Look for something with the name "Venn" on the cover. "Alright! Let's see..."*Trucy looks through the shelf for a while, and all is silent but for the sounds of the security officer working with the tape. Time passes...* "...I don't see it." Huh? "I don't see it here, Polly. Are you sure this is the right shelf?" Yeah, I'm positive. Have you tried looking inside the files? Maybe it doesn't say on the cover. "Um..."*there's more silence as she opens up and glances through each file* "Nope, I'm not seeing it." You mean it's not there? "Doesn't look like it. Did the victim take it with him?" I don't think so... officer, the victim didn't take that file with him, did he? Beg pardon? On the footage. Does he put the file back, or does he take it with him? ...Um... *reviews the footage again* ...It looks like he puts it back, sir. ...Well, that's a problem. "He didn't take it?" No. It's supposed to be there. How the heck is it not there? "Well, it's not. Did somebody else take it?" Officer, did anyone else look at that file in the past two days? ...Not that I'm aware of. It's been pretty quiet around here since the murder. But I suppose it's possible... ...We may need more of that footage than I thought, then. ...I'll get looking, sir. *starts skimming through the footage* "Well, what are we supposed to do now? If it's not here, then I don't know where else to look." Just hang in there for a moment, Trucy. We're looking at the footage now. *they scan through the footage from the time Ray enters the room to the time Apollo and Trucy enter the room... only to find nothing* It doesn't look like anyone else entered the room, sir. ...What? But that doesn't make sense. "What?" It's supposed to be there. How can it not be there? "You mean no one else took it out?" Yeah... hang on, can I look at that again? If you like, but there honestly is no one else on the tape. There's got to be something... this just doesn't make sense. *continues skimming through the tape* I don't know what to tell you, sir. Are you sure you know what file you are looking for? I don't know what other file he would be looking for... it just doesn't make sense. (...I guess it's possible he looked at some other, related case, but if we don't have the file, then I don't think we could—) Huh? "What?" I saw something there. What was that? *rewinds and plays again* What? I didn't see anything. No, look really closely... ...Right there. Did you see that? ...No? *sighs, rewinds and plays again* Look really close. Right there. *watches carefully* ...Did something just move? The picture moves slightly... and then suddenly one of the files is missing. "Huh? You mean the file just vanished on its own?!" No, I'm betting there's something else. ...Think I could get a copy of that clip, too? Um, of course. That's very strange... *sets up the tape again* I'll be right back. I need to go look at something. *to Trucy, as he walks off* Trucy, I'm coming down there, okay? "Okay! See you in a bit."*click* ~*~*~ *walks over to the shelf Trucy is at* Hey Trucy. You haven't moved, right? Hi Polly! Nope, this is the same shelf. Good. That will make things easier. *focuses* ... *The colors around him dull as his aura vision activates once again. No signs of auras on the shelves, however...* ...Just as I suspected. It's faint, but there's magic residue in front of the camera. Magic residue? You mean...? *dismisses aura vision again* Somebody is probably trying to fool us with fake footage. Fake footage? You mean... an illusion?! Yep. I'm betting our mystery illusionist knew there was something in that file that they didn't want us to get our hands on. And there were illusions involved in the murder, too. So that means... ...It's more than likely our thief is also our killer. This is real evidence, then! I knew there was something fishy about all this! Yeah, me too. Now we just have to figure out who the culprit is somehow... Hm... well, if he's smart enough to block out the security camera, he's probably smart enough not to leave fingerprints. We could always check, though... or maybe somebody saw him in the library? That seems possible. If he put an illusion on the camera, then he must have been here, right? Maybe Ms. Book knows something? It couldn't hurt to ask. Yeah, might as well. *heads out of the room* *follows* To be continued... (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Has a different aura than the one left at the scene of the crime; apparently the murder weapon was a replica. Mysterious Portal Device - A device the defendant sometimes uses which can open portals. Being kept safe by a guy named Avrum, apparently. Does not work in the NTWF. Security Footage - Footage from the records room in the library. Seems to have been tampered with using an illusion. ( Clip 1, clip 2) --- Profiles Trucy Gramarye - My assistant. Sanry Fowler - Creepy guy who lives at the AmysGames Offices. Witness to the crime. Rita Book - Works at the local library. Saw the victim in the library shortly before his murder.

{August 16th, 1:36PM Taco City Library Entryway} ...Uh-oh. What? *gestures up ahead* Look. *the police seem to have migrated inside, and are currently talking to Rita* ...Oh. I guess the police are questioning her right now... Maybe if we're quiet enough, they won't notice us... *he starts to back away behind a bookcase* *bonk* Hey! Watch it! Ack! Sorry! (Just ran into the janitor.) *continues dusting the shelves, grumbling something about investigations* (...Hm. The janitor. Maybe he noticed something...) Hey, just out of curiosity, did you notice anyone suspicious here yesterda— I don't know anything about that stupid case, alright? Don't bother me. I'm busy. (...What a pleasant guy.) Um, we're sorry to bother you, sir, it's just we're trying to find someone, and we were wondering if you might have seen him... I don't really pay attention to who comes through here. I just do my job. If you really want to know who was here, ask Rita, or the security guard or someone. Oh! Okay. Thank you! *just walks off* ...Well, we can't talk to Ms. Book while the police are still questioning her. Maybe the security guard again? I still need a tape from him, anyway. Sure! Let's go! *walks off* *follows, trying not to let the police notice him* ~*~*~ ...Anyone unusual who came to the library yesterday? Can't you just ask Rita for the records? Not at the moment, no. Besides, maybe there's inconsistencies or something? ...As in someone who came in some way other than the entrance? Something like that, yeah. Well, I could try looking, I suppose. What time frame are you looking for, exactly? Probably around when the murder occurred, or when the file went missing... so anyone who was there at about 2PM. Well, I could look. It might take a little while, though. Thanks. And don't worry, we can wait. *The security officer begins reviewing various footage around the time of the murder. Time passes...* *watching the screen closely* (Anyone heading for the records room... anyone who goes off-camera...) *boredly juggling some magically conjured orbs* Polly, this is going to take forever. Are you sure we can't go investigate something else? We're looking for an illusionist, Trucy. He's probably counting on us to overlook something minor. Say, isn't that the defendant right there? Buh? *looks closer* Yeah, right there. Looks like he heads for the exit. I didn't see him come in... where did he come from? I don't know, but that really looks like him. *dismisses the orbs* I bet that's the killer, disguised as the defendant! You're right, Polly! This is important evidence! Seriously, where did he come from? Can you rewind a bit? *does so* ...I can't tell. It looks like he just walks out from behind that bookshelf? Okay, this definitely requires more investigation. Think we could get a copy of that clip, too? *sigh* Yes, sir. I'll set up the tape again... ...Sorry. We just really need all the evidence we can get. No no, I understand. Still investigating and all that. I should just keep this ready until the investigation is over... Aheh... Speaking of which, do you still want me to look for anyone who comes for the file? Oh, um, yeah, if you could. Alright, let's see... *continues skimming through the footage* Well, I say we should go check out that bookcase! I bet the killer portaled in from somewhere behind there! Yeah, we'd better go check this out. We'll be back soon, okay? Yes sir. I'll let you know what I find. Alright, thanks a bunch. *heads off* *follows* ~*~*~ *quickly ducks behind the bookcase* (...Police are still crawling all over the place. We're lucky they haven't kicked us out yet.) So? Any signs of a portal? Hang on, hang on... *focuses* ...Yes. Looks like there was a portal here. ~Portal Residue has been updated in the Court Record!~ Great! That means we're one step closer to solving the case! *dismisses aura vision* ...Not really. There's still a lot we haven't figured out. ...Like this doesn't tell us who took the file, just that the killer was in the library before the murder. Well... it is pretty weird for the defendant to open a portal up here into the library. Especially here specifically. Well yeah. I'm guessing this guy wanted witnesses to see him as Vallen. I just wish we could figure out who he actually was. Yeah... whoever it was really didn't want us tracking him down. Like I said, we could do some fingerprint tests or something, but I'm guessing he's smart enough not to leave any at this rate. Oh well. I guess we'd better get back to the surveillance room or something... *peers out cautiously, checking if any cops are watching* ...You know, Polly, if you really want to not be seen, I could make us invisible or something. Huh? I've got a few illusions of my own up my sleeve, remember? I can make things invisible! Watch, now you see me... *she waves her arm, and suddenly she is gone* ...Now you don't! ...He was invisible, wasn't he. Hm? The killer was smart. He wouldn't just want to hide from the security camera while taking that file, he would want to hide from any possible witnesses. ...That makes sense. But then how are we going to find him? Well, if he really didn't want to be seen... he wouldn't want to be seen coming in, either. So he would have to avoid doors and come in somewhere where the security cameras wouldn't be able to see him. Ooh! So there's probably another portal around in the library somewhere where it wouldn't be seen! Smart thinking, Polly! The only question is... where would that be... Well then, let's start investigating! Come on, Polly! Um... Oh, right. Here... Whoa! (Trucy just invisibly grabbed my wrist.)*Trucy's invisibility cloak expands until it covers both her and Apollo. As this occurs, Apollo's vision distorts briefly, and he notices that he is able to see Trucy again* ...Well huh. So we're invisible now? Yep! Come on, let's go! *starts pulling him behind her* Whoa— *takes him out to the center of the room* Okay. Now you can look around from here and maybe you'll see something. Can do. *focuses* ... *the colors around him dull, and then...* ...Uh, Trucy, the aura from your spell is blocking my vision. Oh, is it? I guess that's kind of a problem... Yeah. If you want me to look at anything, I can't do it invisible. Alright, um, let's see... *looks around for a moment* Okay! This way~ Wha— *continues to be dragged along* (This is kind of eerie when you can hardly see...) Okay, we should be safe here. *dismisses the invisibility* What do you see? *rubs eyes* (Okay, that's really disorienting.) *sighs and looks* Alright. Let's see what— Whoa! ! What? What is it? A portal? Really strong... no. Two portals. ...Two portals coming from behind that door. Two portals? Behind that door? ...That's what I just said. *looks around to check if anyone's looking* ... *carefully moves over and tries to open the door* *the door opens easily, revealing what's inside...* ...The janitor's closet? ...The janitor's closet? That seems like a random place for a portal. That's probably the point. (But two portals? I don't understand. Where do they lead to?) Eep! Someone's coming! *promptly turns herself and Apollo invisible* Wha— *invisible'd* *Trucy pulls them off to the side, out of the way of the door. Once they stop, Apollo can hear the sound of footsteps* (Okay... turning off aura vision so I can actually see.) ... *looks up* *pauses at the door, noticing that it's open* ...? (It's the janitor from before. He's going to throw a fit when he realizes...) (...Wait a minute...) ... *scowls, grabbing a mop* *slams the door shut and continues on his way* ... *once he's out of earshot* That was close. I was worried he'd yell at us... He might have done worse than that, Trucy. I'm not sure, but... I think he might be the killer. !! What?! The killer?! I don't know why, and I don't know how. But with the portals being in the janitor's closet and all... I'm certain he's involved in this somehow. But how are we going to prove it? This guy did a really good job at covering his tracks... and if he works here, he probably knows tons of stuff about this place. *sigh* ...No idea. But there's one thing I do know. No matter how hard you try to cover your tracks, there's always something you forget. Something you get just a little bit off. And somehow, we have to find that. Well, let's get looking, then! Yeah. The question again though, where do we start? Um... I know we're asking him a lot, but maybe the security guard knows something? He might at least know more about the janitor. Might as well, I guess. (Maybe we'd better just take the whole security tape.) Well, come on then! *grabs his wrist and turns them invisible again* Wha— *dragged* ~*~*~ ...The janitor? You mean Clen Hall? If you mean the guy who's working today and apparently yesterday, then yeah. Yeah, he works afternoon shifts on weekdays, I think. You don't think he's actually involved in this, do you? ...Let's just say I have reason to wonder. So he was here yesterday at the time of the murder, then? I guess so. But Clen always seemed like a pretty nice guy. I mean, he's always pretty grumpy, but... Just show me the tapes, please? I want to know if he's visible on any of the security cameras at the time of the murder. ... *starts skimming the footage* ...Well, it looks like he goes to get something from the janitor's closet... then I don't see him until, let's see... 2:35? But that could just mean he's back in the employees' area where there's no security cameras— (Bingo.) Do you already have a copy of that part of the footage? ...Um... yeah. I grabbed everything from when the victim arrived to when the file disappears, since you kept finding more relevant footage and all. Oh. Well, um, thanks. That's nice of you. Yeah. Here you go. *hands him the tape* ~Security Footage has been updated in the Court Record!~ If you want to review anything else, you'll probably find it on that tape. Thanks. It should help a lot. ...Just... whatever you do, please make sure you investigate it thoroughly? I don't want to see an innocent man go to jail. Trust us, officer. Neither do we. Come on, Trucy, we've got more to investigate. *walks off* Don't worry. We'll find the truth, okay? *also walks off* ~*~*~ ...So we investigated as thoroughly as we could with our limited resources. Once the police's investigation finished, they let us collect some evidence from around the library for our defense. We even got Ema to help us look for fingerprints and any other hidden clues...~*~*~ ...So when, exactly, did you decide to get a magic scanner? Well, seeing the types of the cases that come up around here, there's always all these auras and residues and such. And people with scanners seem pretty limited, so I figured it could come in handy! Makes sense to me! Yeah. So, um, if you could help us get scans on a few things... No problem! What do you want scanned? Well, first off, there's a portal residue on the wall next to that bookcase over there. *points* We'll want that. Can do! *heads over to scan it* ...And when you're finished with that, there's also something in the court records room, and... *ahem* ...There's two portals in the, um, janitor's closet. The janitor's closet? *examines the readout from the portal residue* Why would there be portals there? I have a few guesses. But we're going to need some scans for proof. Fair enough! *saves the readout* Just lead the way and I'll scan it! *sighs and leads the way to the janitor's closet, keeping guard to make sure Clen doesn't show up* Let's see... wow, there really are two magic signatures. How do get this thing to read them separately...? *fiddles with the scanner* (The prosecution gets trained professionals, and we just get Ema playing with her new toys. Sigh.) Ah! There we go. Okay, one scan, and... two scans. All done! Okay. Now one more. *leads the way to the records room* *when they get there, looks up at the security camera* Hm... we may need a ladder for this. Can you conjure up ladders with magic? I don't know! I've never tried it before. But I'll give it a shot! *waves her hands in front of her* *after a few moments, Trucy successfully manages to conjure up a rough, formed-light stepladder* There! Try that. Ooh! Thanks! *goes over to climb the ladder* (I don't know if I'd dare trust that thing, but...) ...You know, you didn't really have to make it a stepladder. Sure I did! Stepladders are more stable and can fold up for your convenience! (Not that folding it up matters when it's made of magic.) *once she's at the top of the stepladder* Okay, let's see... yep, looks like there's a faint residue in front of the camera. Whatever was here wasn't very strong, and wasn't here very long. Well, seeing as it was most likely an illusion, that wouldn't surprise me. And... scanned! *climbs down the ladder* Was there anything else you wanted to check while we're here? Well, while we're in the records room, maybe you can help us dust for fingerprints on that shelf over there? *hops off the last rung* No problem! I brought plenty of fingerprint powder. Enough magic—it's time for science! *dismisses the stepladder* Okay, it should be on that middle shelf, on this side. On the second shelf... in the middle, where there's a file missing. Check for fingerprints around that. *heads over to the indicated spot* Right over here? Should be. Our culprit probably touched these recently, so it's worth a look. Well, let's see what science says! *cheerily dusts for fingerprints* ~ (I'm betting this isn't going to work... he was probably wearing gloves or something...) ...Wow. Some of these files get touched a lot. There's a lot of fingerprints here... I don't know if I can get any clear prints off of this. (...Or that.) Yeah, I guess that's to be expected in a public library... maybe get whatever ones you can, and maybe one of them is relevant? I'll see what I can do! *continues dusting* (Those portals in the closet are the first real lead we've got to indicate the killer's identity... and even then it's not solid proof. It's pretty circumstantial, really.) (I know that janitor is involved in this, though. There's just too many odd coincidences. I just have to figure out how to prove it...) *after a while ...Yeah, all I'm getting here are partial prints. And some of them overlap, so it's hard to say. *sigh* Oh well. Thanks anyway. Always happy to help! So did you need anything else, or is that it? Um... I think that's it. Unless you can think of anything else, Polly? Uh... not really, no. Alright then! I'll go get these scan reports printed off for you guys, then. *heads off* *waves as she leaves* Thanks again, Ema! (Well, I guess now we just wait and see...)~*~*~ It didn't take long for Ema to get the reports for us, of course. I figured I'd grab some copies of the reports the prosecution collected from the portal and the sword last time while I was at it, just to compare them. The portals were definitely from the same source... the auras from the counterfeit sword and the cameras had similarities, but they weren't quite the same. I'm not sure what this means, exactly.
The thing that still bothers me is the aura itself. It felt so... strange. What was it? And how did all of this connect to that janitor?
I guess we're going to have to find out in court tomorrow...To be continued... (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Other Writer Moment (Intermission)Trucy and Kristoph{The DP Evening} *There's a slight knock on the front door* I'll get it. *goes to answer the door* *When she answers it, she finds Kristoph standing there with bags of gifts. He gives a faint smile.* Evening, Kindle. I've come to visit. Oh, hey Kristoph. Come on in. Thank you. *He walks in to the main area, setting down the gifts* *no one else seems to be in the area at the moment, though Apollo and Trucy's voices can vaguely be heard from the other room* So did you hear that Justice is working on some big case? To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. The days really seem to run together for me now. Who's he working against? You mean the prosecutor? Yes. Edgeworth, so I heard. Really now…? Interesting…. …Did they request Apollo, or was he assigned? Well, the defendant's girlfriend showed up here and begged for his help, so I guess that counts as requested? *Double take* {What?} (Since when did he…? This I have to see.) Uh… is he here right now? Yeah. *jerks a thumb toward the hallway* In the back, I think. Alright, thank you. *He makes his way over to where Apollo is, quietly* *Apollo seems to be in the back lobby, discussing his case with Trucy* ...still not sure what to make of these readings. Yeah, I've never seen magic like this before... *Stops to listen* …? Well, they seem to be the same kind of magic, but... Well, these ones look the same. Yeah. I just wonder... I don't know. *sighs and stands up* I'm going to get something to eat. Alright. *heads off into the kitchen* *Is silent for a few moments, and then walks into the room* *looks up from the readouts at Kristoph* ? Oh! Hi, Mr. Gavin! Hello, Trucy. How have you been doing? Oh, I've been doing pretty good! I've been practicing some new magic tricks. Oh? Yeah! Watch this: *she forms a magic orb in her hand, which solidifies and changes appearance to look like a glass orb* Very impressive. Can you make it into different shapes, or are you mainly working with spheres? Well, so far I've just been able to do spheres, but I could probably do other shapes eventually! How have things been around here lately? I haven't been here in a while. Oh, things have been pretty good! Not too much in particular going on... ...Oh, except for the case Polly's on, I guess. Can you tell me more about that? Kindle mentioned it, but I'm not sure if she was messing with me or not. *frowns a little, looking at the papers on the table* Well, we haven't been having a lot of luck getting solid evidence. The guy is apparently an illusionist and is really good at covering up his tracks. There's this janitor who Polly suspects did it, but we're not sure how to prove it yet... *Glances down at the papers* Illusionist, hmm? Very tricky to deal with. Why the janitor, though? What's his reasoning? *the papers seem to be readouts of various magic scans* Well, the killer also used a lot of portals to get around, apparently, and we found some of them in the janitor's closet. And he doesn't show up on the security footage at the time of the murder, so... *Hides a smile with his hand* You're going to need more than that, I'm afraid. There are plenty of reasons someone might slip away using portals, private affairs other than grudges. Also, if you were to use a portal, you'd want to use it in a less traveled place if you didn't need to make one up on the spot. As such, anyone who knew where the closet is could be suspect. And suppose the being you are looking for was indeed working as a janitor that day. Does that mean they are the janitor? Remember, you are dealing with an illusionist. Unless such questions can be definitively answered, it's not going to fly. Yeah... it's going to be really hard to prove. I'm not sure what Polly plans to do, exactly. *Kris seems quiet in thought, as if remembering something from the past.* I'm afraid I wouldn't know, either. It's hard for me to predict him. *frowns* I don't know if even he knows, to be honest. Well, he'll have to think of something. It's not a charge that should be placed lightly. Yeah... What is the prosecution using as the main reason why they still are pressing the charge? Well... without complete proof of the killer being an illusionist, there's still a lot of evidence against the defendant. Witnesses, no alibi... I see. I would focus your efforts on proving the illusionist aspect, then. Yeah, that's what we've been trying to do. I think we've made a lot of progress on that front! *Smiles* Good. Just keep at it. Thanks! We'll do our best~ Good. That will help me be less worried after I go back. *giggles* Oh, don't worry about us. We'll be fine! Heh. Alright then. Just don't wear him out too much. *Places a hand on her shoulder* It was nice to see you again, but I'd better be going soon. Aw, already? I'm working now. I can't be away for as long as I used to. I came to pay a small visit, and then I'll be going back until about the end of October. Aw. Well, I guess that makes sense. It was good seeing you, though! Thanks for stopping by! I'll be back before you know it. Goodbye for now, Fräulein. *Walks out of the room* *waves* *walks back into the room* ...Okay. I've been thinking about it, and... ...Was that Kristoph just now? Uh-huh! He has to go to work, though. Oh. Well, okay. Anyway, as I was saying...

{August 17th, 9:41AM District Courthouse Defendant's Lobby} ...Clen Hall...? The name isn't familiar. Okay, well, could it be a fake name, maybe? I don't know. I suppose it could be, but I wouldn't know why someone would do that if they're already impersonating me... This is bad, Polly. If Mr. Hall and Vallen don't know each other, how can we prove a motive? ...No idea. But maybe the motive isn't immediately apparent. Either way, hopefully we'll find out in the trial. Do you think we're ready? Ready as we'll ever be, I guess. "Not quite yet, no." ...? *look over at the sound of the voice* ...Pardon me for intruding. Mr. Edgeworth? What are you doing here? Yeah, don't prosecutors have some other lobby to wait in? Well, yes, but there was something I wanted to take care of before the trial starts. ...Mr. Justice. Huh? *walks over to Apollo* Hold still for a moment, please. Um... *Edgeworth holds a hand up by Apollo's head. His hand then begins to glow with a bright aura* What are you doing to him?! Relax. This is just a precaution. *after a few moments, his hand stops glowing and he steps back* There. ...Uh. What was that? I know your abilities rely on those of your "opponent," Mr. Justice. That should keep them from acting up in court today. ...So, a mind shield? Yes. It's the same mind shield I use before entering a trial. A telepath's abilities are not to be abused, Mr. Justice, and I won't have you doing so in court. (...It's not like I was trying...) That is all. I'll see you in court, Mr. Justice. *walks off* ...That was kind of... weird. Tell me about it. (So much for preventing headaches. I think I feel one coming on...) So he was worried you were going to mirror him, or something? Well, I kind of... did, a little, yesterday, so... You did?! It was an accident! These stupid powers are hard to control! ...I'm not certain, but it sounds like you're having difficulty controlling your magic? ...Yeah, I guess. It kind of comes up in... weird circumstances. Magic can be difficult to use, I've heard, but it can usually be controlled. Perhaps you could seek out a tutor? ...That would be nice, if there was anyone else in the worlds with my abilities. It doesn't have to be an exact match. One with similar abilities might be able to help, or just a general magic expert perhaps. ...I'll have to look into it. But later. Right now we have a trial to worry about. Speaking of which, I guess we'd better get to the courtroom soon, huh? Yeah, probably. Let's go. *walks off* ~*~*~ {August 17th, 10:00AM District Courthouse Courtroom No.2} *bangs gavel* Court is now in session for the trial of Vallen Hawkeye. The defense is ready, Your Honor. The prosecution is ready, Your Honor. I presume both of you have gathered sufficient evidence for the trial today? I believe so, yeah. (Or at least I hope so.) Yes, well... we have looked thoroughly into the matter with the portal device and the portals. The portal device in question is apparently being kept in the world the defendant came from, which we have been unable to gain access to due to safety concerns. Safety concerns? ...They're at war, Your Honor. Hm. Yes, that does complicate matters. The device is also kept under close guard, in order to keep their enemies from stealing it. Our attempts at requesting use of it as evidence have been rather... trying, but we are working as best we can. Hm. Well, hopefully that will be sorted out by this trial's conclusion. And what of the portal? Well, we can safely say that the portal did not lead to the Void, as Mr. Justice insinuated last time. ... We believe the portal led to the defendant's homeworld, which, as mentioned, we have not gained access to. However, another portal, opened at an earlier time, was discovered near the scene of the crime, inside the library. Inside the library? (Just one portal, huh? Guess they didn't find the ones in the janitor's closet...) Yes, Your Honor. We have a witness who saw the defendant in the library just before the murder. *shocked murmurs from the gallery* This is an intriguing turn of events. I think I would like to hear from this witness, personally. Of course, Your Honor. The prosecution would like to summon Mr. Syd Burns to the stand at this time. *a burly man saunters up to the stand* *waves at the gallery* Morning, folks! Hey, isn't that the guy they were talking with at the crime scene? Um... probably? (Seems like a pretty cheery fellow.) Witness, please state your name and occupation for the record of the court. The name's Syd Burns! I work at the library, putting books back in place and such. Mr. Burns, could you tell us about what you saw at the library yesterday? Sure thing! -TESTIMONY- What I saw Alright, so there I was doing my job as normal, putting books on the shelves and what have you. And that's when I saw him—the defendant, Vallen Hawkeye, walking past like he was in some big hurry! I tried to talk to him, ask him if there was anything he needed. Y'know, part of the job. But he didn't answer! He just hurried off. I just thought it was kind of weird until I'd heard he'd murdered that kid out back. Just goes to show you never know who you'll run into, huh? --- Hm... indeed. Some people are much different than they appear... Which also applies to illusionists, right, Polly? Exactly. We just need to prove it... Mr. Justice? Your cross-examination, please. Yes, Your Honor. (There's too many holes in that testimony. Looks like it's up to me to shed some light on the matter...)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- What I saw Alright, so there I was doing my job as normal, putting books on the shelves and what have you. <Press> Where were you at this time? Um... toward the front of the building, I think? I don't remember for sure. (That would make sense.) ...Did you notice anything odd at all? Anything out-of-place, maybe? Well, it started as just a normal day like any other... --- And that's when I saw him—the defendant, Vallen Hawkeye, walking past like he was in some big hurry! Are you absolutely certain it was Vallen Hawkeye? It must've been. He looked an awful lot like the boy in that seat over there, and I've never seen another man dress like that! (Talk about your deja vu.) Did you see him up close? Did you see his face? Um... he was pretty close, yeah, but by the time I saw him, his back was to me. So no, guess I didn't really see his face that well. It was definitely him, though. I'm sure of it! (I'm willing to bet you aren't, Mr. Burns.)~A new piece of testimony is added~ --- By the time I noticed him, his back was toward me, so I didn't really see his face very well... it was definitely him, though. <Press> ... (...Probably better not badger him about what he saw without evidence. Okay, different question.) So what made you notice him in particular? I'm sure a lot of people go through the library. Well, he walked right past me. It was hard not to notice. You didn't know the defendant before this, did you? What, that kid? Uh... might've heard the name once or twice? So you don't know him personally, then. Can't say I do. Can't say I particularly care to, either. Murdering people in back alleys and all... (He didn't murder anyone in a back alley, Mr. Burns.) (And I'm going to prove it!)--- I tried to talk to him, ask him if there was anything he needed. Y'know, part of the job. But he didn't answer! He just hurried off. <Press> Did you see where he came from? Or where he was going, for that matter? ...Didn't notice where he came from, nope. But he was headed for the exit. Off to do his dirty work, it seems. So you didn't see him come in before that, then? Nope, can't say I did. ...Mr. Justice, mind if I ask if you have a point to this? ...Well, I was just wondering, because it was to my understanding that the defendant entered the library— ...Through a portal, yes. We're aware of this. ...A portal? What portal? ...The second portal I mentioned earlier was opened in the library shortly before the murder occurred. Evidence suggests that this was how he entered the building. ...Doesn't it seem at all odd that he'd portal in specifically to the building? Not necessarily. Perhaps he intended to confront the victim there. ...The victim he didn't even know? The victim he could have mistaken for someone else. (Oh, right, yeah. How could I forget.) At any rate, it is not as odd as you may think. Please go on, Mr. Burns. Yeah, I didn't notice any portals. Like I said, he just hurried off out the door. --- I just thought it was kind of weird until I'd heard he'd murdered that kid out back. Just goes to show you never know who you'll run into, huh? <Press> When did you hear about the murder? A couple hours later, when the police showed up in the back alley. ...And why didn't you come to testify earlier? Well, I didn't know who the defendant was until yesterday. When I found out, well... I thought I should bring up that I'd seen him. (...Fair enough, I guess.)--- (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. You say his back was toward you when you saw him, right? Well, yes. He'd passed me by the time I saw him. So surely you would have seen his sword, right? He carries it on his back, so far as I know. Sword... yeah, I remember the sword! It looked like a pretty nice sword, too! It was kind of shimmery. Shimmery...? So wait, remind me. Are weapons allowed in the library? In a city like this? Sometimes that weapon is the only thing you got to defend yourself! So... they're allowed in the library, then. Sure! As long as they stay in their sheaths. Emergencies aside, of course. ...Interesting. So the culprit had his sword in the sheath, then? Otherwise he would have raised alarms. Well... yeah, I guess it was. Then how did you know it was a nice sword? All you would have seen is the handle. ...Because it was shiny and well-kept? Not sure what you're getting at. Perhaps you'd like to take another look at the sword in question, Mr. Burns. ...Is this the same sword? It's... similar, but the handle is all worn. Not shiny at all! Mr. Justice, what exactly are you getting at? We've already established that the murder weapon was not the same sword. What?! It was a fake?! ...Well, clearly Mr. Burns didn't know that. ...I was so sure it was that kid, but if the sword was a fake, then... hm... *murmurs from the gallery* Mr. Justice, do you have any new evidence to show us? We have already proven that the swords are not the same. That doesn't prove anything about who the culprit actually was. ...Uh, well... ...You know, thinking of it... that might explain some things. Hm? Witness, did you have something further to add? I dunno if it's relevant, but... -TESTIMONY- The culprit's identity When he was passing by me... I did kinda see him out of the corner of my eye. And for a moment, I thought he was someone else, but... ...Not sure who, exactly. Just reminded me of someone, I guess. --- ...So, in essence, you're not sure who the man you saw was? Yeah. When I first noticed him, I thought I might have seen him before, but then I looked and he didn't look familiar to me. I dunno if that makes sense. ... Interesting, Mr. Burns. Might I ask a few questions on that point? ...I guess? Not sure what else I can say, though. If you have a relevant question, Mr. Justice, please proceed. Yes, Your Honor. (This is it, Apollo. Time to strike him down!)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- The culprit's identity When he was passing by me... I did kinda see him out of the corner of my eye. But what exactly does that mean? Did you see his face? ...Yeah, but again, out of the corner of my eye. So not really enough to give a profile or anythin'. But that's when you thought he looked familiar, right? ...Yeah. At first, I thought he looked like someone I'd seen before, but... --- ...Not sure who, exactly. You're the only one who's hot here. ...That supposed to be a compliment? I'm saying that you're the only one who's sweating. Must be all that pressure from standing up there lying to us on the witness stand, hm? What?! How dare you say that! A Burns never lies! Syd Burns - Works at the local library. Saw the attacker in the library prior to the murder. --- Take a look at these reports, Your Honor! ...What is this? Magic residue...? These magical energies were found at the library. Portals. Portals? More than one? That's right. Two of them, one before the murder and one after the murder... both of them in the janitor's closet, of all places. Wh-what?! So tell me, then. If these portals were found in the janitor's closet, then wouldn't it be reasonable to assume... ...That maybe the janitor was somehow involved in the murder?! *the room fills with the sound of surprised muttering from the gallery* *bangs gavel* Order! I said order! *as the muttering softens* ...Your Honor. I believe under these circumstances, it's worth looking into the matter. The defense requests we summon the janitor, Clen Hall himself, to the stand! I agree that this is a very troubling turn of events. Two portals in the janitor's closet... I would too like to hear Mr. Hall's explanation for this. No... it can't be...! Clen Hall will be summoned to the courtroom immediately. This court is in recess until he arrives. *bangs gavel* *people start shuffling out to the lobbies* *steps out from behind the defense's bench* Way to go, Polly! You did great! *sigh* Yeah... we're not out of the woods yet, though. I'm betting cross-examining this guy won't exactly be easy. Don't worry! You just have to believe in yourself, and do your... *trails off, looking over at something* ...Best? ...? *looks up* ...Mr. Edgeworth? I need to talk to you about something very important, Justice. Now. To be continued...

(Edgeworth wants to talk to me? Right now? Hooo boy he looks mad...) Uh... okay? What is it? *sighs, massaging temples* ...Do you remember that talk we had earlier regarding your abilities? ...Oh, that? I haven't been hearing any thoughts today, if that's what you're— No. I mean, that's good to know, but there is something I failed to mention earlier. ...I don't know if you've heard, but, er... reading minds isn't the only thing I am capable of. Not counting the mind shields, right? Not counting the mind shields. It's... something else. ...I think I might have vaguely heard something about that, maybe? (What, can he see the future or something?) (...Oh geez, please don't say you can see the future...) *heavy sigh* It's... I'm not sure how to describe it, exactly. It's a bit like hypnosis. ...Putting people to sleep? No. I'm referring to the power of suggestion. Suggestion...? ...As in, causing others to do things against their will. Wait, what? Against their will?! Supposedly it won't cause actions that individual is directly opposed to, and can be resisted by willpower, however... apparently it is also quite intimidating, so I fear what the exact limitations of the ability are. That's nuts... when did this happen? I have no idea, but apparently I've been doing it subconsciously for... a while. The only way I've been able to suppress it is by being aware of it and keeping myself mentally focused so as not to accidentally trigger it. I am unsure how else to prevent it... I really should have mentioned this to you earlier. ...Wait a minute. Are you trying to tell me that... I did that? Considering the witness' reaction to your earlier questioning... I suspect so. ...What reaction? Um... I think I felt your aura spike a bit when you were accusing him of lying, but... (...That might have been my perceive abilities, though...) Yes... shortly after that, you asked him if he was "absolutely certain" that it wasn't Mr. Hall that he saw. ...He was intimidated and immediately conceded... despite his fervency on the matter every time besides. ... I guess that... was kind of odd... Thus why I urge you to be more cautious in this upcoming cross-examination. It is not an ability to be abused. ...If I knew how to permanently prevent it, I would. ... You know, you can't just block out all of your powers all the time. That hypnosis thing sounds pretty scary, but I bet it could be useful in the right— "Useful"? It is manipulative. Never mistake that for "useful," Ms. Gramarye. No! I don't mean like that, I mean... maybe you can do other, nicer things with it. Like helping someone feel better when they're scared or something. ...What part of "intimidating" did you fail to understand? Maybe it was just intimidating because you were subconsciously trying to intimidate them. And maybe it wouldn't be so bad if you tried it with a different mindset? Ms. Gramarye... I'm just saying if you completely ignore your powers, thinking they're all bad, then you'll never find good uses for them. Even dark magic can be used for good, you know. ... ... ... I should probably review my case notes. Be careful, Justice. *walks off* ...He didn't even listen to me, did he? Hard to say with Edgeworth. He tends to keep his thoughts to himself, ironically. He just keeps talking about his powers like they're a bad thing. Powers don't have to be bad. I know what you're saying, Trucy, but Edgeworth is... Edgeworth. He doesn't like people prying into his life, so I guess he returns the favor to everyone else. Yeah, but... still... *sigh* (It's too bad my mirror ability is a reflex. It makes it harder to control properly...) (...Oh well. I should probably be reviewing my case notes, too.) *continues on his way* ~*~*~ {August 17th, 11:47PM District Courthouse Courtroom No.2} *once the recess is over, people reassemble into the courtroom* *bangs gavel* Court is now back in session for the trial of Vallen Hawkeye. The defense is ready, Your Honor. The prosecution is ready, Your Honor. Now, before the recess, Mr. Justice requested a particular witness take the stand. That witness has now been summoned to the courtroom, and we ask at this time that Mr. Clen Hall please come forward. *Clen shuffles up to the stand* (This is it, Justice. This is where we make or break everything.) ...Please state your name and occupation for the record of the court. Clen Hall. I'm a janitor. Mr. Hall, could you please tell us about your whereabouts at the time of the murder? I can, but I don't see what good it would do. Please testify to the best of your ability, Mr. Hall. ...Fine, whatever. -TESTIMONY- Clen's Alibi I don't really know anything about this murder. Yes, Your Honor. (That's a load of baloney, Mr. Hall. I know you know about this murder and I'm going to prove it!) Good luck, Polly...-CROSS-EXAMINATION- Clen's Alibi I don't really know anything about this murder. I was mopping the floor in the employees' area when it happened. I only heard about it afterward. <Press> You were in the employees' area? Well, yeah. That's what I said, right? And you didn't notice anything unusual? Uh, no? Like I said, I was mopping the floor. How interesting...)--- I didn't see the victim or the defendant or whoever, and I certainly didn't see anyone get stabbed. <Press> You're absolutely sure you didn't see the defendant or the victim? (I bet you care more than you're letting on, Mr. Hall...)--- So basically I have no reason to be here. I'm not a witness. <Press> Are you sure about that, Mr. Hall? Are you trying to be annoying? I didn't see the murder. I didn't see the defendant or the victim or anything like that. I didn't witness anything. So I'm not a witness. *deskslam* I think you know more about this murder than you're telling us, Mr. Hall! Really. So you can read my mind and tell me more about what I know than me? *ahem* No. No, he cannot. (Yeah, yeah, Edgeworth.) You're absolutely sure you didn't see anything strange when you were back in the employees' area mopping the floor? How many times do I have to tell you? I didn't see anything! Really, Mr. Hall? Not even... ...this?! ...What, a piece of paper? This "piece of paper" is a readout from a magic scanner used in the library. This tells us that a portal was opened in the building about ten minutes before the murder. Like I said, I didn't see anything. And I didn't see any portals, either. You didn't? That's very strange, Mr. Hall... because this portal was found in the janitor's closet! ...! If you were really in the employees' area mopping the floor, then how the heck did you not notice someone opening a portal in there?! *muttermutter* *glares at Apollo for a moment* ... *siiigh* So that's the route you're going, huh? Fine. Be that way. -TESTIMONY- Portals in the Closet How didn't I see a portal in the janitor's closet when I was in the employees' area? Well gee, let me think. Possibly because the janitor's closet isn't the whole employees' area? Just because I was back there doesn't mean I saw the portal in the janitor's closet. It's not nice. --- I get the feeling he's not going to give up easy... Ugh, yeah. And it's going to be the death of me... Hm... seems reasonable to me. Mr. Justice? Do you have any further questions? Here comes Justice!)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- Portal in the Closet How didn't I see a portal in the janitor's closet when I was in the employees' area? Well gee, let me think. Possibly because the janitor's closet isn't the whole employees' area? <Press> But the janitor's closet is in the employees' area! Well, yeah. It's at, like... the entrance, of the employees' area. The employees' area is pretty big. One little closet does not a whole employees' area make. But if it's at the entrance, then you would have had to have seen it going in. Well duh. But even then, you realize... --- Just because I was back there doesn't mean I saw the portal in the janitor's closet. Maybe Hawkeye or whoever snuck by when I wasn't looking. Maybe he was hiding in the closet the whole time. I don't know.<Press> ...Hiding in the closet? You know, with the door closed? (You're telling me?)--- Anyway, you shouldn't just throw accusations around like that. It's not nice. <Press> ...Who said I was accusing you of anything? Oh please. I'm not blind; you've been glaring at me the whole time like I'm a criminal. (I'm not the only one doing the glaring around here, Mr. Hall.) You honestly expect us to believe you didn't see that portal? It's not as absurd as you think it is, Mr. Lawyer. I think you're bluffing... because of this! This security footage shows you going into the— What? There's no security cameras in the employees' hall. Perhaps not, but there are ones just outside of it. If the court will allow it, the defense would like to review a part of this footage. Hm... permission granted. Bailiff? *the bailiff helps Apollo set up the tape so the court can see it* *fastforwards to the part he wants* You see, Mr. Hall, even though we can't see into the janitor's closet in this footage, we can see when you enter the employees' area. *stops at one point in the tape* ...And I think this tells quite a story! What is it we are looking at, exactly? *leans in closer to see the picture* You can see Mr. Hall in the top corner, right? Why... yes. What about it? Now, that hallway he's walking towards leads into the employees' area. Is this correct, Mr. Hall? Well... yeah. Now, note how Mr. Clen isn't holding a mop in this picture. Your Honor, can you read the time stamp on this footage for me? Um... August 15th, at 1:50PM. And what time does the readout for the portal found in the closet say? ...About 1:50PM! Oh my... Exactly! *deskslam* Now if you were really going back there to mop the floor, Mr. Hall, then wouldn't you need a mop? You know, from the janitor's closet? ! ...Y... yes... So then what excuse is left for you not to see that portal? Unless... ...Unless you've been lying to us this whole time?! ...! Mr. Hall! It's time you told us the truth! The reason you "didn't see the portal" is because you're the one who opened it, aren't you?! And you're the one who killed Ray Venn! *surprised murmurs from the gallery* Order! Order in the court! *bangs gavel* Mr. Hall! What say you to Mr. Justice's accusations? ... ... ... ... *snrkt* BAHAHAHAHA! ! He's laughing? Why is he laughing?! Mr. Hall? Ahaha... sorry. Just, wow. ...Excuse me? I'm serious. Do you have any idea how stupid that is? -TESTIMONY- "You're full of it" So you think I did all this? Wow, okay. Let me count the ways that doesn't work. One: opening portals generally requires magic. I've never used magic in my life. Two: I've also never used a sword. Three: I've never met Hawkeye or Venn before. Why should I care? Four: you imply that I would have had to disguise myself as Hawkeye to pull this off. We don't exactly look alike. Do you get the point yet, or shall I go on? --- He... hey! Now he's just being mean! (And not in the annoying way he was before. Now he's being cocky.) Hm... you make an interesting argument, Mr. Hall. I'm not sure what to believe now. Let me put it simply so you all can understand me, then: I didn't kill anyone. End of story. Hm. Mr. Justice? Cross-examination, yes. ...Your Honor. Alright. Please proceed, Mr. Justice. (His demeanor completely changed, and I can take a guess why. I'll show you who's full of it!)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- "You're full of it" So you think I did all this? Wow, okay. Let me count the ways that doesn't work. <Press> It does too work and you know it! Slow down, will ya? Let me finish. Geez. ...Ngh. As I was saying, there's tons of reasons I can't have done this... --- One: opening portals generally requires magic. I've never used magic in my life. And why should we believe you?! Pfft. You don't have to believe me. Go on, test me. Scanners, aura vision, whatever. (...How did you know I had aura vision? Ngh, whatever.) *focuses* ... *the colors in Apollo's vision dull, and the brightly colored auras from around the courtroom shine like a beacon* ...I... I don't see any signs of magic... See, what did I tell ya? No magic. *dismisses aura vision* (But that doesn't make sense. There must be some other explanation...) So what do you say, Mr. Lawyer? Give up yet? ...No. My opinion is unchanged. I just don't know how you did it yet. *shrug* Your funeral, Mr. Lawyer. (...What is that supposed to mean?!) Anyway, as I was saying. One: no magic... --- Two: I've also never used a sword. <Press> How do we know that for sure? Pfft, please. Do I look like a swordsman to you? I'm a janitor. ...Mr. Edgeworth's a prosecutor, and he's a swordsman. Mm. While the claim that he's "never" used a sword could be questioned... I agree that he does not appear to have the build of a trained swordsman. See? He believes me. (You don't have to be an expert to stab someone, you know.) What was I on, number two? Let's see... --- Three: I've never met Hawkeye or Venn before. Why should I care? <Press> You've never met them? Not even once? Nope. Not unless they passed by without me remembering or something, but that hardly counts as meeting someone, does it? (...There's no way I can prove this. Moving on...)--- Four: you imply that I would have had to disguise myself as Hawkeye to pull this off. We don't exactly look alike. <Press> A disguise can be very thorough, you know! Especially with illusions invo— How many times do I have to cram it in your head that I'm not an illusionist? ...Well, they don't have to be illusions. It could be... hair dye or something. Hair dye? That I would have had on for what, fifteen minutes? No hair dye's that temporary, and if it was, it would be way obvious. (...There's something odd about this... I can feel it...)--- Do you get the point yet, or shall I go on? <Press> I still think you're lying! Need more convincing, huh? Five: I don't own a sword. Six: I don't own an outfit like that. Seven— Okay, okay, I get the point! Do ya? So are you ready to back off? ...No. No, I'm not. I'm going to find the truth of this matter one way or another! Oh, how noble of you. Too bad you're looking in the wrong place. (Okay, Apollo, he's obviously just calling your bluff. He's got way too many reasons for being innocent to be innocent. ...Wait, no, that's not exactly what I meant.) (But anyway, I know he's guilty and somehow I have to prove it!)--- <Perceive> (His demeanor completely changed when I accused him of murder. He says I'm being funny. I say... he's slipping.) *puts a hand to his bracelet and focuses* ...You imply that I would have had to disguise myself as Hawkeye to pull this off.
...We don't exactly look alike. Mr. Hall, you keep playing with your hair. Any particular reason for this? ...Any particular reason why not? In fact, it's interesting... as soon you mentioned your appearance in relation to Vallen Hawkeye's, your hand went to your hair. Oh, I know this part. And that's supposed to have some kind of hidden meaning to it, right? (...How the heck does he "know this part"? Does he know about my perceive abilities?) ... *ahem* Actually, I think maybe it does! Really. Like what? That my hair committed the crime? Now that would be hilarious. *deskslam* Let me speak for a moment! Mr. Hall, you say you look nothing like the defendant. Which is interesting, because from a distance, with the right outfit... the only obvious difference would be the hair color. No illusions required. *smile fades* ...You really think that. *smirks slightly when he notices this* Why yes, in fact, I do. Speaking of which, that brings another point to mind. People of the court, you may recall the testimonies of our previous witnesses in this trial... --- ...But you're absolutely sure it was him? Did you see his face? *thinks on this* ...Not up close, no. --- Um... he was pretty close, yeah, but by the time I saw him, his back was to me. So no, guess I didn't really see his face that well. --- ...Neither of our witnesses ever actually claimed to clearly see the defendant's face. They just claimed to see a man who looks remarkably like the defendant. Now isn't that interesting? Interesting, yeah. Interesting that you don't seem to know what you're talking about. Let me finish. In particular, Mr. Syd Burns admitted that when he caught a glimpse of the man who passed him, he briefly thought it looked like you, Mr. Hall. ! He... he did? ...Yes. Quite so. *ahem* Yes. However, he denied it, saying... --- ...But it couldn't have been him! He had the wrong hair color! --- ...Oh yeah! I thought that was kind of odd... Now why on earth would he say that, Mr. Hall? Of all the things he could have commented on—the clothes, the stature, and so on—he specifically mentioned hair color. Isn't that strange? ... *contemplative murmurs from the gallery* Hm... I have to agree with Mr. Justice on this one. It seems almost too... uncanny to be mere coincidence. However, I am curious what you have to say on the matter, Mr. Hall. ... *heavy sigh* ...You want me to be honest, Mr. Justice? Truly? ...We're in a court of law. You even have to ask? Yeah, yeah. Here's the thing: I dyed my hair recently. You... huh? Like, a few days ago. From blond to brunette. Any of my coworkers will tell you this; I'm not just making this up. So... you used to be a blond? ...Just like Vallen... Yep. But then I got bored of blond, so I decided to try something different. Burns probably just saw Hawkeye's short blond hair and forgot I'd dyed mine. ...That, actually... *glances at Apollo* Kind of makes sense... Wai... wait. How long ago did you say you dyed your hair? Like, a couple days before the murder? Seriously, any of my coworkers would vouch for this; ask them if you don't believe me. (...Ah crud.) *smirks at the look on Apollo's face* Yeah. Can't just take back a dye for fifteen minutes and have it come back on a whim. That'd be hard on your hair. And a wig would look ridiculously fake. But... but I know it's possible! It has to be! It's really easy with magic... Magic? You already know I don't have that. *flicks bangs out of eyes* Face it, Mr. Lawyer—no matter how much you want to believe it, it wasn't me. (Nngh! There's got to be some way to counter that! Think, Justice, think!) (How does one use magic without...) (...without...) ...! The defendant himself does not use magic... but this device does. So even though the defendant might not have magic, he is capable of using magic, thanks to the outside help of a magic item. Am I making sense? ...So... now you're trying to tell me I changed my hair color with a magic item? ...Actually... appearance-altering magic items are not out of the question. ! What?! You?! *ahem* Yes, me. But yes. Surely, for example, you have heard of this man? ... Everybody's heard of Phoenix Wright. What does he have to do with anything? Well, surely you have also heard that he is now in possession of a piece of magic engineering designed specifically to alter one's appearance... proving not only that such a magic item is possible to create... *deskslam* ...but that such things exist. ...!! *surprised murmuring from the gallery* You... aren't you supposed to be the prosecutor? You know, prosecuting Vallen Hawkeye? In theory, yes. However, I've found that an attorney's assigned role in a court of law is unimportant in comparison to finding the truth. See? I told you Mr. Edgeworth would help us! Uh, yeah. *deskslam* Your Honor! I believe we've more than adequately proven the possibility of Mr. Hall committing this deed at this point. Hm... I have to agree with Mr. Justice. Anything to add, witness? Y-you... how dare you! -TESTIMONY- Last Effort You just keep talking about "possibilities, possibilities." Well, where's your proof, huh? You can't prove anything! Where's this magic item I supposedly used? Where's the murder weapon? Most importantly, where's the motive? Why would I do anything like this in the first place? You don't have any of that, though, do you? You can't prove anything, Justice. There is no proof. --- Witness... please try to remain calm. ... But yes... without any conclusive evidence, I am unable to hand down a verdict. Mr. Justice? Your cross-examination, please. Yes, Your Honor. (He can't keep this up for much longer. It's time to strike him down!)-CROSS-EXAMINATION- Last Effort You just keep talking about "possibilities, possibilities." Well, where's your proof, huh? <Press> If you just wait, then I'll show you! Really? Go on, then! I'm waiting. ... Um... Yeah, that's what I thought. --- You can't prove anything! Where's this magic item I supposedly used? Where's the murder weapon? Most importantly, where's the motive? Why would I do anything like this in the first place? <Press> I bet I could answer all of those questions! Really? Go ahead, then. Amuse me. *deskslam* First off! The, um... well... Seriously. You're just going to run into dead ends that way. Just admit it. You need proof that you don't have. (...Rngh! All that time looking for evidence and I can't prove anything!)--- You don't have any of that, though, do you? You can't prove anything, Justice. There is no proof. <Press> There is too proof! And I'm going to prove it! You are, huh? Then why don't you? ...I was about to, just... um... Admit it, Mr. Lawyer—you're done here. --- (Court Record)Evidence Attorney's Badge - My attorney's badge. This proves that I'm a defense attorney. Portal Residue - The magical residue from a number of portals opened around the time of the murder. There's one at the scene of crime, and three inside the library—two in the janitor's closet. Ray's Autopsy Report - Died at around 2PM, August 15th. COD: Loss of blood due to stab wound in chest. Vallen's Sword - The defendant's sword. Made with enchanted metal for extra strength. Has a different aura than the one left at the scene of the crime; apparently the murder weapon was a replica. Mysterious Portal Device - A device the defendant sometimes uses which can open portals. Being kept safe by a guy named Avrum, apparently. Does not work in the NTWF. Security Footage - Various footage from the library. Some of it seems to have been tampered with using an illusion. ( Clip 1, clip 2, clip 3, clip 4) Scan Reports - Scan reports from various spots of magical residue. ( Scan 1, scan 2, scan 3, scan 4, scan 5, scan 6) --- Profiles Trucy Gramarye - My assistant. Sanry Fowler - Creepy guy who lives at the AmysGames Offices. Witness to the crime. Rita Book - Works at the local library. Saw the victim in the library shortly before his murder. Clen Hall - Works at the local library. I suspect he's involved with the murder. Syd Burns - Works at the local library. Saw the attacker in the library prior to the murder. --- <Present Evidence> You can't prove anything, Justice. There is no proof. Interesting choice of phrasing, Mr. Hall. "There is no proof," or... "the proof is missing"? It doesn't matter. You'll never prove anything! I think it does matter! Allow me to show you something, Mr. Hall. ...On this footage. *rewinds to the appropriate place* ...What is this? Is that... the victim? That's right, Your Honor. This is footage that shows that Ray Venn was in the library just moments before his death. ...And what does that have to do with anything? As we can see from this footage, Ray Venn took the time to visit the court records room to look at one particular file. According to Ms. Rita Book, the library assistant... a file detailing a case about his father. What? The victim's father? Exactly. You know, though, it's interesting. That file? *deskslam* Has mysteriously gone missing. ...! *surprised muttering from the gallery* Missing? Someone took it? Oh yes. Right out from under our noses, too. *fast forwards a bit to the clip of the vanishing file* ...What are we looking at? Look closely, Your Honor. ... ...Oh! That file just disappeared! What is the meaning of this?! As I said, the file was taken right out from under our noses—this footage was tampered with using an illusion! So that we could not determine the identity of the thief! Hold up! Here's this illusion crap again! I'm not an illusionist! Maybe you did, maybe you didn't. All I know for sure is that it went missing just half an hour after the murder. Do you really think that's mere coincidence? Mr. Hall, I do believe it's well within reason to assume that this file was taken because something in this file has something the killer didn't want us to see! ...! *more muttering from the gallery* You know, if it's a case file that's publicly available in the library... we should have a copy of it in the Prosecutors' Office, as well. What...?! *pleased smirk* Oh? Is that so, Mr. Edgeworth? The Prosecutors' Office has all the files the library has and then some. If it really is relevant, we could easily look it up... What do you say, Mr. Hall? Would you like us to do that? *deskslams* That won't be necessary. Whoa—! (What the heck?!) Search all the files you want, Mr. Justice. It won't change anything. It still doesn't prove that I did anything. (What was that?! I thought I just felt his aura spike! But...) So looking into that file would be a waste of time. And, in my opinion, completely irrelevant. So how about it, Mr. Justice? Do you have any evidence that actually is relevant? (...I don't know if I do. Argh! I'm so close! Think, Justice, think!) Yeah. I didn't think so. You're done, Justice. Case closed. (Nngh! I don't— wait! Wait, that's it!) No it's not, Mr. Hall! Seriously? Do you ever give up? My goal is to find the truth, Mr. Hall... ...And that's exactly what I'm going to do. You're just making a fool of yourself now. You're never going to— Your Honor? Hm? If the court will allow it, I'd like to perform a test. What sort of test? I need a magic scanner. *murmurs from the gallery* Magic scanner? Now you're just getting desperate! Hm... I'm not certain what you have in mind, but... I'll allow it. *the bailiff brings Apollo a magic scanner* *takes it, walking up to the witness stand where Clen is* Hold still. You already tried that! How is that going to— *beep beep beep!* ...!! What?! There's a reading! I noticed something odd about your aura just now, Mr. Hall—I felt it spike up in the same way a magic user's does. That's impossible for a man with no magic. Which, somehow, you managed to fool us into thinking you weren't. But you slipped. And now? There's a reading. Th-that's ridiculous! I— Speaking of readings, might I direct your attention to this one! This reading is taken from the security camera in the court records room in the library. Do you notice something? It's exactly the same as the reading from you! !!! And do you know what else is interesting? This reading is remarkably similar to the ones we found everywhere else in this case! Do you want to know why this is? It's because you're the murderer, Clen Hall! No...! Here's how it happened! --- Ray Venn was looking into something he wasn't supposed to be looking into. I don't know what, exactly, but I know that somehow, he had to be silenced... and that's what you set out to do. But you had to blame someone else for it. And that someone happened to be Vallen Hawkeye.
You went all out. You got some of his clothes, covered in his scent. You got a counterfeit sword, with an almost identical magic signature. You even got a portal device, all as part of your elaborate disguise. And to throw people off your trail, you even dyed your hair, just to make sure no one would recognize you. It was the perfect disguise.
And then, when you saw Ray at the library looking into his father's trial... that's when you saw your chance. You ducked into the janitor's closet, jumped through a portal, and got into costume. You came back through the library, walking through just to make sure someone saw you as Vallen Hawkeye. Which someone did—Syd Burns, your own coworker.
Then you chased after Ray, following him into that back alley... and there the deed was done. There you met another witness, Sanry Fowler. And you ran, before either of them could get a close look at your face. It worked. They were both fooled.
And then, just to keep anyone from following the trail, you went back to the library, snuck into the records room, and got rid of that file... that one case file you needed to keep a secret. And once that was done, you became Clen Hall again returning to your duties as janitor. No one suspected a thing.--- ...No one, of course, until now. What do you say, Mr. Hall?! Am I wrong?! ...N... n... *aura suddenly explodes* NOOOOOOOOOO! !! *stumbles backward, away from the aura* (Holy—!) You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into! NO IDEA! Polly! Are you okay?! Nngh... th-this aura...! (It's so strong all of the sudden...!) !! P-Polly, snap out of it! What is going on?! S-stop it! Whatever you're doing, Mr. Hall, stop it! *own aura explicitly rises* Stop it right now! ...! *turns to face Edgeworth instead* You'll regret this! Do you hear me?! YOU'LL REGRET THIS! !! *clutches head, panting as his aura starts shifting back to normal* Th-that aura... it's like there's something wrong with that aura! Wh-what?! ...! Bailiff! Handcuff him, quickly! You—*the bailiff promptly snaps power-blocking cuffs on him* —Nngh! *aura suddenly fades* (Phew... okay, Apollo, deep breaths...) ...Are you alright, Mr. Justice? Yeah. Should be. Well, that is a relief. Now. I believe it is high time we bring this trial to a close. *raises gavel* This court finds the defendant, Vallen Hawkeye... NOT GUILTY As for you, Mr. Hall... you will be awaiting further trial in a higher court at a later date. *escorted off by the bailiff* N-no... you'll see. You'll all see. *all falls to silence as Clen is led out of the room. There is a pause* ...That is all. Court is dismissed! *bangs gavel* ~*~*~ {August 17th, 12:46PM District Courthouse Outside} *pushes open the doors* We did it, Polly! I still can't believe we did it! Yeah... it sure was an uphill battle, though. *comes up behind them* I really do thank you for your help, Mr. Justice. I don't know what I would have done without you. Well, you're welcome. I'm just glad we finally found the truth. But I still don't— *tackled from behind* Oof! You're okay you're okay you're okay! Gloria! *chuckles, glancing behind him* Almodine! You were at the trial? We were! I was so worried about you, but you're okay! *hugs* You're okay! I'm quite relieved, myself. It's good that you're free, Vallen. Haha... I'm glad to be free. "Excuse me, Mr. Hawkeye." ...? *glances over at Edgeworth* Yes? ...This man had something he wanted to say to you. *clears his throat, stepping out from behind Edgeworth* I, uh... sorry for the mix-up, kid. Oh. ...Well, it's alright. You were understandably confused. ...Yeah. ...I still can't believe Clen did this. You think you know a guy, and then he pulls a stunt like this... *frowns* I'm sorry about your friend. Eh, we weren't really friends. Associates, yeah. But still, I always thought he was a decent guy. We all did, really. But I guess he fooled us all. I'm sorry... I know it's hard when someone betrays your trust. Meh. I just wish I knew why... ...By the way, Mr. Justice. I could try and find that case file if you're still interested. Oh, uh, sure. Could be worth looking into. I'll get right on it, then. *walks off* ...I should probably get going, too. Work to do and stuff. See you guys around. *also walks off* ...That poor man. It must be so difficult. *sigh* Yeah, I know how he feels. It's not easy. ...There is something I still don't understand. Hm? What's that? That man... Clen Hall. I am certain I have never met him until today. What reason would he have to impersonate me? I don't understand. ...Um... I don't know. You don't think someone put him up to it, do you? Or maybe... ...Maybe he was never really "Clen Hall" in the first place. *presses a finger to his forehead* Ugh, this is all so confusing. ...Maybe for now we should just settle with the fact that we found the real murderer and go home. Yeah, this is all kind of giving me a headache. Let's go back and celebrate your innocence, okay? ...That sounds good, yes. *Gloria, Vallen and Almodine head off on their way* Come on, Polly. We should go home, too. *heads off* *follows* End Case 1

Case 1 Epilogues -- Edgeworth{August 17th, afternoon Prosecutors' Office} *searches through case files, seeming to be deep in thought* (...I still can't believe I did that...) *wanders by, waving* Hey, sir! Just wanted to say good job in court today! Mm. Thank you, detective. ...Might I ask you something? Of course, sir! ...You're a werewolf. Surely such a thing carries heavy weight. Oh, it's not so bad! I got an amulet to keep it in control, so it doesn't act up during the full moon or anything. Yes, well... have you ever feared the potential risks of a dangerous ability you can't control on your own? Um... not really. I just keep the amulet with me all the time, so it's never a problem. Do you ever worry about... abusing the ability? Nope! I use it all the time to sniff out trails and stuff. Think of how many bad guys it's helped us catch! Yes... I see. Thank you, detective. You're welcome, sir! Let me know if you need anything else! *wanders off* *sigh* (Good uses for bad abilities... I don't know. Perhaps she is right. But is there really any use in abilities that are so invasive?) *pulls out a file, examining it* (When that man seemed to be harming Justice with that terrifying aura, I wanted nothing more than him to stop... and he immediately did. But was that really the right thing to do?)*he flips open the file, staring at it for a moment* (...He wasn't intimidated at all. He was angry. I know I meant to intimidate... perhaps it is easier resisted than I feared. And yet...) ... *shakes head, closing the file* (...Perhaps I'll have to look into it more thoroughly.)*he walks off, taking the file with him* ~*~*~ Case 1 Epilogues -- Vallen{The next day Muilic} *sighs, stepping into a cabin and closing the door behind him* Hello, Avrum. Ah, Vallen! It is so good to see you! I was worried about you after I'd heard what happened. And the men from the other world kept asking for the artifact... it was quite worrying. Yes... what did you hear, exactly? That you had been accused of shedding innocent blood and were being held for trial. I was worried that... *trails off* Yes, well... in that strange other world, a man decided to impersonate me and kill someone in my name. We're still not sure why. However... apparently it was likely in an attempt to have me killed. Oh dear. A Tilotarian? Or someone associated with them, perhaps? We don't believe so. I honestly don't know who it was, or... how he even knew who I was. Hm... that seems strange, indeed. You aren't widely known on that world, are you? Not to my knowledge, no. At least, not then I wasn't. I might be now... It just seems peculiar. I don't know who it could have been. Well, either way, I'm certainly glad it's over. I hope the others haven't suffered too terribly while I was gone... Things seem to have been moreorless at a standstill lately, thankfully. So I don't believe your absence made much difference. I suppose that's a relief. Oh, I also wanted you to know that requests for the artifact should be dropped now. They wanted to examine it for their trial, but now that the trial is over, they'll no longer need it. That's good news. I don't know that letting it out of protection for even a moment would have been wise. We certainly can't let the Tilotarians have it. Exactly. *turns around, toward the door* Well... it was good seeing you. Leaving already? ...As you may be aware, I have business to take care of. I'm sorry. *opens the door and leaves* *sighs, shaking head* Oh, you poor boy... I worry for you.

Case 1 Epilogues -- Sanry{? ? ?} ...absolutely aggravating. I felt utterly useless. You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Perhaps not. It was bothersome, regardless. ...You know, I attended the second session of the trial. Just to see this astounding illusionist they spoke of. And? Apparently, this man has the capability to "deactivate" and "reactivate" his own aura at will. ...What? I did not know that was possible. Nor did I. However, the first time they tested him, they said he had no magic. And then the second time... he did. That is... unbelievable. I wouldn't believe it either if I didn't see it with my own eyes. ...I was rather shocked. ...Hm. That is indeed rather troubling. Such an ability existing... ...Mm. It just bothers me to know that such an impostor could slip by me without me noticing. He sounds to be quite a powerful illusionist. I'm sure he would have fooled almost anyone. ...Perhaps. But I do not like to be fooled. It aggravates me. It is understandable. No one likes to be fooled. Don't be too hard on yourself about it; it isn't your fault. ... ... ... *sigh* I suppose you're right. It is in the past, and the culprit was caught. ... I should return to my studies. Good day. *walks off* ...

Case 1 Epilogues -- Apollo{August 18th, morning Frost & Co. Law Offices Apollo's Office} ... Defendant: Eli Venn, retired policeman Verdict: GUILTY
Case Description: The victim, Wes Meaney, was a reformed member of a disbanded criminal organization who called themselves the "Knife Fites." It is believed that Venn, whose wife had been murdered by the Knife Fites, retained a grudge against the man and therefore shot Meaney in the heart. While this motive was never proven, the defendant Eli Venn was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection... (...It all sounds so familiar. And yet, it doesn't make any sense.) (I'm not sure how this ties to Clen Hall at all. Why did he want to keep this hidden? I just don't understand...) *walks in* Still looking at that file? *sigh* ...Yeah. Just trying to make sense of it, I guess. Clen Hall went to elaborate lengths just to keep us from seeing this file. There must be something in it he didn't want us to see, but... I have no idea what. So unless it was something only in the specific file Ray looked at... Maybe you should just let it rest for now. You're gonna give yourself a headache. Eh. I don't know... it just bugs me is all. By the way, how are you feeling? After that aura thing... I'm fine, really. It was really weird, though. Remember when I was talking about that aura that was just kind of... off? Well, when his aura went crazy like that, and I started mirroring it a little... ugh. It wasn't pleasant. ...You said then that it felt like there was something wrong with it. Yeah. I don't know, it just felt... tainted, or something. It was weird. "Tainted"? Wow, that's really scary... I'm just glad you're alright! Yeah, I don't think it would have killed me or anything drastic like that. Or at least I hope my aura is smarter than that... Still though! I was so worried for a moment there. I'm fine, really. *sigh* Oh well. Maybe someday this will all make sense. *encouraging smile* Well, at least we found the culprit, right? And found our client innocent! That's what really matters. I suppose. *giggles* You should take a break. Wanna go grab a snack? *sets down the file, standing up* Sure, why not. *skips out of the room* ~ *follows*

Case 1 Epilogues -- Clen{August 18th, afternoon Taco City Detention Center} ...So this is it, then. It's all over now.
Justice was too smart. He saw right through me. I guess I should have expected he would. That kid has eyes like a hawk. But even still... no one has ever caught me before. Maybe I was too careless.
But it doesn't matter anymore. It's too late. I messed up... I let them down. Even worse, I let them down..."Mr. Hall? There's a visitor here for you." ...? *looks up* ...Hey, Clen. ...Burns. Didn't think you'd come. Neither did I. *sits down* But there's something I gotta understand. ... ...The Clen I knew was a pretty decent guy. I mean yeah, we never really talked, and he always seemed kind of grouchy... but he wasn't the kind of guy who would go out killing people. And yet, that guy out there in court yesterday? It was like you were a completely different person, Clen. ... I just gotta know, why did you do it? Why did you kill that kid? What did he ever do to you? ...That's none of your business. *slams the desk in front of him* Why, Clen?! Why did you gain our trust just to go and stab us all in the back?! Were you ever really a good guy at all?! I had to do it, okay?! You don't understand! I don't understand what? *sighs heavily* ...Nevermind. Just... stay out of this, Burns. It's none of your business. I want to know the truth. I'm serious. You do not want to get tangled up in this. Tangled up in what? ... ... *turns away* You wouldn't understand. ... Fine. Be that way. *stands* Just know that you let me down, Clen. I used to think better of you. *sharply turns and walks out of the room* ... ...I was too weak. I let them down. They'll take me for sure...
