It turns out some companies, like Viacom (yes, that Viacom) actually support this bill.

Which means, in the unlikely event that this passes, our Neopian artists showing original art of Neopets on dA and fanfiction writers who show off on websites other than the NT...lose everything. And to top it all off, those user smilies that Sarn so kindly made for me (thanks again!) may be taken off Photobucket, and I won't have cute li'l Xandra anymore! i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv103/prophetesszealitys/Character Smilies/xandra_what.gif[/img]

Keep in mind that who supports it would change nothing, should it pass. The legality wouldn't change. The enforceability (or lack of) wouldn't change. But the thing to remember is that Viacom is a media company primarily. Nickelodeon, MTV, movies, tv shows, etc. They're trying to protect that property more than Neo. Neo is an online community site, that also gives explicit permission for uses of imagery, et al. Viacom isn't concerned about Neo here. Also, keep in mind that the things quoted about the implications of this law are scare tactics. They're using ridiculous extremes (the likes of which would almost never be enforced in most cases) to scare up support to deny the bill.

I think Viacom treats Neopets the way Disney treats Marvel. They own them, yes, but they just stay out of it and let them do their own thing.

Eeeyup, it's a marketing strategy that's becoming really popular, it's kinda cold and somewhat low in my opinion! XD But, oh well! *shrugs*

In bad news, the bill is going into mark-up. It'll probably be changed, but they may vote on it this Friday. In good news, The OPEN act is being introduced to Congress. This is a bill that will basically keep the internet free and allow for due process; fair use will be upheld, and everything will be pretty much the same.

See, the problem with Congress is that they don't feel that the American public watches them - and this is true. Whatever insane laws Congress makes are always blamed on the current President; Congress knows that they can eat away at the Constitution and our rights as citizens because they won't get the blame.

The only thing they've done since then, was to have Marvel print a few of their comic series XD And add Marvel toys to the Disney Store. :3 But back on topic. I'd heard about the OPEN act. It's definitely a more suitable bill, because it actually allows recourse for the accused. Hopefully SOPA gets shut down in favor of something more like this.

I just noticed that the protest form on americancensorship.org and sites that include said protest form has an option for non-US citizens to sign a petition with their e-mail address. So if you're non-US and still want to protest, now's the time to do so!
