A few weeks ago, I auditioned for a select band--anyone in high school anywhere in the district could audition. Naturally, it's a lot less common for a freshman like me to get in than it is a junior or senior. I did, though--eleventh, last, chair in the top band; a close friend, also a freshman flute from my school with whom I'm about tied in musical talent, made tenth. Today was the only rehearsal, and then this evening was the performance. I was really nervous this morning--I couldn't even remember whether the zipper on my dress pants was supposed to be on the back or the front. (I had to ask my mom so I could finish getting dressed ) It was the top people in the district--there were around eighty flutes alone that auditioned. I was definitely in the two best among the freshman flutes at school, if not just barely best, going by the chair rankings last year, but among people mostly older than I was from all over the district? And I wasn't entirely sure I was ready with the music. But it turned out to be awesome. I didn't embarrass myself, although I did end up not playing in a couple of places during the performance, and we were too hard at work for me to be nervous about the other people there After the performance the honors band got a standing ovation. It was, all in all, very, very great

Excellent! I'm a flute as well. I just recently joined the senior band at my school...isn't it awesome to play with people who are better than you for once? I think it is. Congratulations on getting into the select band! Yay Mushroom! ;D

*plays the tenor saxophone* ^_^; It's strange, though, the Bunni (the name of zee Saxophone) is actually at least 1/3 my siize o__O;.
Anyway, I play the violin too, and congratulations in making it! I bet it was really hard.

Playing the clarinet is harder that you think, especially in a band. First of all, I can't make low notes of high notes, and all the other clarinets can. Then I found out about the jazz band, which I really wated to be in, but guess what? There are no clarinets in it! Only saxophones, trombones, and a whole bunch of other things, but no clarinets! That's crazy! Now I have to either learn to play the trumpet of not join.

Jazz band will be starting after Christmas break, and my teacher's pushing me to join as a TROMBONE! She says flutists make very good trombone players. I guess it's possible - it would be kind of cool to learn an entirely new instrument!

However, flutists do transistion to French horn pretty well altough I highly advise against that if your planning on taking your flute very seriously in the future. I switched for marching band and it really messed up my lips... I couldn't play verbrato at all during marching season.

My dad told me it would probably mess up my embouchure...and since I am going to be taking my flute very seriously, well, maybe it isn't a good idea. It's also really hard to switch from flute to piccolo and back again.

Oops, I kinda forgot about this thread ^^; Heh, thankies I have a tenor saxophone. I want to learn to play it to be in Jazz Band. It needs some repairs, though, and I need to find lessons...teachers for pretty much any instrument are really scare around here

Congratulations! One of my best friends is trying out for all-region (junior high) tomorrow. She plays the clarinet. I currently don't play any music instruments, but I used to play piano and violin, and people keep telling me I should play the flute.

One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't learn to play a musical instrument when I had the chance. In middle school there is no beginners band - either you already know how to play decently and can join the intermediate or advanced band, or you don't play at all. For those of you lucky enough to know how to make music, remember that you have an incredible gift, for music can strike deep into the souls and hearts of humankind. My gift is with words, and yet nothing I can write could ever be more beautiful than the chime of a single silver bell, nor more powerful than the sounding of a brass trumpet. Words can only go so far. They are compositions of thought and convey only as much. Music is pure raw emotion. It speaks not from mind to mind, but heart to heart and soul to soul. To hear the serene tinkling of a piccolo is to feel that same tranquility. The pounding of a drum interupting by the crashing of a cymbal can create the same fear or anger in any heart as that of the composer of the piece. Words could never do that. They are just too limited. To those of you upon whom the gift of music is bestowed, I envy you. Never forget the power that you have within you.

My friend made Regions! Concert band, fifth clarinet. And my other friend made All-Region Orchestra. I'm surrounded by musical geniuses. Ember, I kind of feel that way, too. I used to play violin and piano, but they both kind of went down the drain when I moved. My school does have a beginners' band (and after that Cadet, Concert II, Concert I, and Symphonic), but I didn't join and I kind of regret it now.
