I know how you feel. My parents are on vacation in Vancouver right now, and my sister is working up at college this summer, so I'm home with my brothers. They have their permits, but not their licenses, so they can't drive me to the bookstore to get it, so I won't be able to get it until next SATURDAY! *dies* Cool, Vancouver! I used to live there, ya know. Hope you get the book soon!

Heh, intresting fact for everyone.
It seems Luna and Ron live near each other. I was flipping through book 4 and saw the Diggorys talking to Mr.Weasleys. Mr.Diggory (Amos, whatever you know him as) was talking about the magic famlies living near there and mentioned a family called 'The Lovegoods'.
I'm going to assume that they are the same, but still..that's rather neat. ^_^
(Luna was so cool. I really did like her...and that HAT!)

Meh ... you guys should be grateful that at least you are getting the book sooner or later ... I'm never gonna get that book 'cause my parents ... or rather my mom ... says that the book will bewitch me into doing whatever magic and the names are actual names of the devil ... ok, the reason about the names, that I can understand and why my mom doesn't like the book ... but I don't understand what does the names have to do with the book itself! And I'm not interested in magic or whatsover! Anyway, my mom and I had a talk last night and in the end, she said rather unhappily that if I really wanted to read it, then I'll just have to borrow it from some friend but she'll never ever buy that book for me for my birthday or anything! Actually, my parents were pretty cool over this HP stuff before ... but AFTER my mom got this e-mail regarding HP, she made me throw away my 3 books ... yes ... it's like watching money flutter away ... literally ... *sigh* ...

If it's an e-mail I've been hearing about, then it's FALSE You see, some IDIOT read an article from The Onion (which is a famous SATARICAL NEWSPAPER, kinda like Noremey and Stone's articles) and took it seriously. So even thought through the whole 'interview' JK was saying things like "Yes! I am converting children to satatn!" it was a satire on how these rleigious peopel are so darn uppity about it. This may or may not be the e-mail, but I'd show it to yoru mom and ask her if it is. ^_~ I'll be a few sickles that it is... www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/potter.htm

I'm just wondering if the LOTR series had as much religious trouble as the HP series is getting now... It's just silly to worry over a FICTIONAL book like that, thinking that kids will become gothic after reading it. I do suspect that there would be at least a few kids who have taken/would take the books seriously and think that it was real, but that's probably only a few. You should really tell a kid that it's made-up before letting them read the book. I suppose it all depends on how the parents were raised and how they raised their children.

I'm just wondering if the LOTR series had as much religious trouble as the HP series is getting now... Well actually, no. Tolkien's LOTR series is compared to C.S. Lewis's Narnia series, in the sense that both authors expressed God and religion in the form of those books, although their methods of doing it were a bit different.

I always thought that Tolkien was comparing it more to WWII (that's what I've read, in any case).
Feh, don't worry about the whole 'religion' thing. The vadican has cleared Harry and said that it teaches good morals and yadda yadda yadda.

I did a study on Harry Potter for my english final and you would be suprise at how this didn't change a lot of the rabid religious peoples views. A lot of them started to say that (I'm not making this up. I'm scan the article but my casebook study is with the teacher) the Vatican had taken a 'Pagen stance on this' and that they were 'succumbing to the evils of Harry and Satan'. But, I dunno thsoe are usulay those .0001% of people in the world who are nutters. They're jelious because they can't properly perform a summoning charm!

I've been raised in the church my whole life and I'll gladly say that God is the most important thing I live for. No, I don't know the whole religious mumbo-jumbo, I can't quote chapter and verse the whole New Testament or something, but I do know what it means to be a Christian; better than many so-called-Christians, in fact. And ya know what... when people start calling Harry Potter satanic and start pulling "religion" on why people shouldn't read it... that really tinkles me off. Probably more than anything. I mean, honestly. It's a book. In fact, I don't call myself religious anymore. I say I follow Christ and that's it. I'm ashamed to call myself religious after this whole arguement started.
See, these nutcases are ruining it for Christians and non-Christians alike! Arrrghh....

The whole religious thing is stupid...and the pictures on the news of them burning all of those books. First of all; like that is going to help; and second of all...you are burning BOOKS, for Christ sake! BOOOOOOOKS! (and rather good ones at that) But I also find it odd that HP represents Satanism ( : , yet never mentions the devil...funny...and you'd think they would have Harry bow down to Voldemort if he was supporting Satan. And most kids these days can tell the difference between supporting dark arts and reading a book...pfft...

(people whose parents don't like HP, show them this):
I love the Harry Potter books; just look at my name. I read all five books (the first four numerous times) and have seen the movies time and time again. I've spent 10 years in Christian schools, (will be spending 3 more), and I find nothing blasphemous in Harry Potter books. "Lord Voldemort" can be taken as blasphemous, but "lord" is a title for someone of high status, not necessarily God. I think that it's good that it makes kids read novels, and plus I like the Latin enchantments.
I have a relative who's super-religious; she yelled at me after a funeral because I didn't genuflect in front of the tabernacle. (I was reminded of my religion teacher who made me do my quizzes standing orally in front of the whole class.) She insists that HP is evil and teaches kids bad things--and doesn't know I read the books.
Well, I have an autistic younger brother who thinks Harry Potter is a real person, and has actually tried to fly using a broom (Luckily we found him) and names objects after HP ones. So I know how people feel when they say "Harry Potter has a bad influence on some kids." I know; some kids are too young for it, or just aren't ready for the powerful meaning of it.
But this whole religious thing...honestly. Harry has a godfather, so his parents must have a religion, and Harry was probably baptized. So it's not against religions.
Linny, you're right. "The Onion" is meant to be completely satirical, but idiots can take it the wrong way.
And book-burners? I laugh at them. They have to buy the books first, giving Scholastic and J.K. Rowling more money.
...but let's not plunge into religion any further; we don't want to start a huge debate. Enough has been said. I loved Order of the Phoenix, especially Luna; what did you guys think of it?

Sadly most of the peopel who think Harry is evil do it on a few things...
1) They read this said e-mail which quotes SATARICAL QUOTES FROM A HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY SATARICAL ESSAY.
2) They automaticly assume that magic = chickens and blood and virgin sacrifices
3) They assume.
Yes, they assume. I read an article where one pastor had a book burning. When the press interviewed him he said "Well, I never READ the books, but I assume they're evil". All in all I must say that those people are not worth anyones time nor effort. They are sadly xenophobic and wouldn't even be able to udnerstand the literary genius JK puts into each book.
Besides, the good thing is that the people who understand Harry far outweight those who don't. If you guys have parents who don't let you read the books, go to your library and read it there. If your parents got this said e-mail explain it was a shotty, paper-tiger argument and was based nothing more than made up facts.
Urgh, I hate some of these things. I was acosted by a girl last year who said "You know! Harry is the devil! I heard JK say that she dosen't like religion and wants to take kids away from it!". What a load of poop. JK herself is religfious and belives in God. Besides, if God didn't want HP on this earth, they why didn't he smite JK when she was still a baby? >P

Yes, show that Snopes article on that e-mail to your mom, and also, with very little searching, you can find a lot of valid articles by Christians out there *supporting* the Harry Potter books-- making note of the positive qualities that they teach kids. And the bottom line is, you should point out to your mom that she needs to trust that you can separate fact from fiction.

Yes, that's exactly what I've been trying to tell my mother ... that I know when to draw the line at when I'm reading books! But she still doesn't believe me and said that she was never ever gonna buy that book no matter what! Grr ... ah well ... I guess I'll just have to borrow the book from somebody ... although I have no idea whom ... oh and about the article ... I don't think it was that one that my mom received because it included stuff about JK Rowling using satanic names or sth like that ...
