We resisted making a thread for so long, but it finally happened.
After almost three years of dating, as of the 13th May 2023, me and Thundy are now engaged. Not a surprise, but still quite cannot believe we did the thing.
The Engagement Story
So, that is the story. Now it is time for the big thing: the wedding. We are looking at having it take place in Europe on October 2025 (time and place TBC) and -this is the important part- we have an open invitation to ALL NTWFers who think they could make it out there for a few days. You have plenty of time to save, and this is going to be a pretty awesome party.
If you think you might be able to attend (no commitment required yet!) please put down your name on this thread and we shall get in touch with you closer to the date with a concrete time and place. At the moment we are trying to compile a potential guest list so we can go browse venues. Yes, you can include a plus one too!
Be there or be square! We want this to be the biggest meetup ever!

After almost three years of dating, as of the 13th May 2023, me and Thundy are now engaged. Not a surprise, but still quite cannot believe we did the thing.
The Engagement Story
It began, like all good love stories do, in Detroit.
We were supposed to have been spending a romantic night in New York, but our flight the previous day had been delayed by three hours, so we missed our connection. We had to spend a night in a Detroit airport hotel. Couldn’t even get food. It was a nice room though.
After getting up early and catching our flight to New York-or rather, Newark- the day improved significantly. You see, Thundy had arranged a stretch limo service to pick us up from the airport the night before, so we could cruise through New York at night with champagne to our hotel. New York at night did not happen, but he managed to rearrange the car, so instead we got to cruise through daytime New York, taking in the skyline from across the water, while drinking champagne in a stretch limo.
Eventually, we got to the hotel we were supposed to stay at the night before, but obviously did not, because Detroit. They were nice enough to let us drop off our bags at least. Afterwards, since we missed our appointment at the Intrepid Museum (once again, thanks Delta!) we headed off to Central Park to meet Nat and Carolyn, stopping off on the way for bagels and a little sightseeing at Times Square.
Times Square was…okay. You get there, you see it, it feels sketchy and is heaving with people, and you want to leave. Which is what we did, before going on to Central Park.
Meet up with Nat and Carolyn, wandered around until we got tired, then grabbed some food. All lovely stuff. Eventually, it was time for me andThundy to head off, so we got a cab down to the One World Trade Centre. Before we went up, we took a wander around the World Trade Centre memorial park, which was pretty sobering. We did not stay long before we headed up.
At this point, Celes thought we were only going up to the observatory and then a few drinks at the bar. Thundy, however, had other ideas, and had secretly upgraded us to a three course meal. At this point, it was clear what was going down.
We still had a ton of time to kill before the reservation, so we got on the lift to wander the observatory. The lift is pretty awesome. As you go up, you see a display of New York being built around you, followed by the building itself being built around you. You’re then taken in a group and shown a short presentation about the city and its landmarks, at which point, the screens lift up and you get your first glimpse of New York city from 400 metres up. It’s pretty awe-inspiring.
We wandered around for an hour, looking at the views, taking photos, and seeing what landmarks we can identify, as well as watching the world go by. We could see from Newark to Staten Island, to Midtown, to Brooklyn. Ferries going by, planes landing or taking off at the airports, helicopters going by, all really cool. Of course we got to see the Statue of Liberty, so we did not miss out on the quintessential NYC experience.
Finally, it was time for our reservation. We got the best view in the house, looking over the Hudson River. We got some cocktails and got our starters in. Thundy was very nervous so ordered some small arancini. Celes, however, got a whole heaping plate of mussels, which Thundy had to agonisingly wait until the whole thing was consumed, all while having butterflies in his stomach (even though he knew what the answer was going to be).
The mussels came with four slices of wonderfully buttered, soft and crunchy toast. After Celes had finished the starter, one remained. It was too good to waste. Celes barely started to eat the toast when Thundy spoke up.
“So, we’ve been together for a while…”
Prompting the hilarious line of “Not now, honey, I’m trying to eat my toast!”
However, at this point, there was no stopping Thundy. He went through the whole spiel, and delivered the actual question in Ukrainian, which he had been practising. Celes said yes. This thread wouldn’t exist if that had not been the case.
The waiters had been in on this, thanks to Thundy, so they brought out glasses of champagne for us. We drank those as we ate our main. Celes’ dessert also got a cute topper.
When we had finished, we headed out and caught a cab to grab our luggage, then head to JFK airport to catch our business class flight back to the UK.
A fantastic day overall.
And some photos, for those of you who want them. :3
