Mac put out a neoboard thread today listing some of the things the NT is most in need of right now, in case it might be of help to anyone wanting to contribute to the Times! In short, series and articles are the most in need, and short stories and comics are doing fine. The fact that they're putting out a call for more series seems to be another sign that more will be accepted per issue in the near future.

Wow! More series?? I haven't been writing longer stories because of what happened earlier last year (also angry hands) but... I do have a thing that I can edit and cut some stuff from? I wrote it in 2020.
Definitely good to know!

I hope my intentions don't come across as rude here, but it kind of stands to reason that there aren't many series being submitted these days considering their policy on them this past year has made it really discouraging to even bother writing them at all. It certainly has for me, at least.
I mean, I'm glad that there's a demand put out for them now, so maybe I might get the motivation back to write/finish some.

Likewise - I've had a series in works since like 2018 and pretty much shelved it when it became apparent that getting it published might become a big ol' sniping game of luck and repeated efforts. Now that the sniping game looks to be alleviating (and summer break is nearing so I should be able to get more free time from work) I should be able to finally push it to the finish. Honestly, on the one hand I'm glad to see this much increased and outright unprecedented transparency from our current editor, but on the other hand it does make for a lot of wobbly uncertainty as to the current NT-production processes because there's just so much fluctuation. I'm a grown adult person with responsibilities n stuff, I want to be able to just... knock out some cute fanfics in my rare spare time and send them off without undue fuss and with reasonable confidence that I won't have to worry about what happens to them after that.

I agree that this is welcome news for those of us who have been itching to write/publish more series, but they WERE also the reason for the decreased series output, what with the hard cap and all. Mac didn't really address the series cap right as they started on the NT, so we had to wait and see what would happen as more series from the last collab issue wrapped up. Mac has indeed been accepting series more often with each series that ends, but it will take a while for people to finally start crawling out of the woodwork with their series. Heck, while the cap may be increased now, we don't know if this just means a higher hard cap, or entirely on Mac's workload.
I also agree that this level of transparency and interaction is a welcome breath of fresh air but I am concerned that Mac may try to please people too much - for example, as I expected, Battledome people were already all over them asking them to look into fixing the BD and some of them have already wandered into the writers' Neoboard to talk about that - and that these changes may happen a bit too often and too fast. I appreciate everything Mac is doing, I really do, but they do need to set some hard and fast rules that not even the most intense Neopian cajoling won't be able to cross.
Unfortunately since I already have a series lined up for the next collab issue from my habit of simply attempting to shoehorn series into special/collab issues to get them published, I'm not exactly the person to ask for more series right now especially with two short stories waiting in the database when my series ends this week. Unless I am somehow able to write a series that's what, only 2-3 parts long. But we'll see after this upcoming series for which this custom thumbnail was made, heh.
I mean, alternately, I could go back to writing articles for a while. I already have the idea of writing an article about how to lose yourself in writing too many series. /shrug

I've been away for a while (uh, years, haha), could someone explain what happened last year with series?
Was frustrated to open the NT for the first time in a long time and see that none of them are labeled by "parts" anymore...

Was frustrated to open the NT for the first time in a long time and see that none of them are labeled by "parts" anymore... There was a huge drop in the number of series being accepted into the NT from the old days, and more often than not series got rejected instead of accepted without any clue as to why - we just got the standard TMGE. As Huntress has mentioned, submitting a series became a matter of trying to snipe an open slot and doing it again and again until you get favorable results. Eventually, Aesop imposed a hard cap of 3 series running per issue with the exception of collab or special issues. That really put a damper on some people submitting series as now, each time a slot opens, it would be sniping season and may the odds be ever in your favor. While the number of series per issue has increased thanks to Mac, since the NT editor now holds multiple duties and responsibilities, we won't be getting the same volume of series we used to any time soon.

Oof, three? That's so low. I wonder why that was? You'd think they would want more content with the declining numbers. It was just too much reading/labor maybe? Thanks for your answer.

That's likely what happened. Aesop, on top of being NT editor, was also judging other contests, among other things that we aren't so clear on. As a result, several NT issues would pass without any new series at all. You submitted a series, you get a rejection, only to find out that the upcoming issue has no new series at all. In 2020 I probably hit a new record of most number of rejections for a single piece. (That piece went back to the drawing board but whatever, I'll pick that up some other time.)
