The dirt under your feet squishes and quivers like something alive. Trees loom overhead, limbs cracking like bones as they bend ever so closer. You resist the urge to run. The trees don't see you as prey and you'd like to keep it that way. There's a clearing up ahead, a safe zone free of hungry branches. You inch your way closer, one softly place foot after another, tilting slightly on the dirt that's not dirt.
Finally, you make past the trees. One branch reaches down as you pass under, leaves plucking a single hair from your head. The trees begin to sing, deep croaking words with no meaning that somehow fill you with dread. You step further into the clearing and they stop.
Several doors fill the clearing. The dirt around their bases looks cracked and displaced, as if they grew from some strange seed deep underground. Each door is different. There are wooden doors painted various colors with windows in the center, the kind you'd find on houses. There are metal doors with metal handles directly in the center. There were ornate doors of solid oak, intricately carved with creatures that seem to shift and flex, as if trying to escape the wood.
A figure walks over. It had no defining shape, just an ill-defined blob of shadow and what looks like swirling slivers of gold. The slivers move in panicked jerks, likes bugs trapped in jar they still haven't realized has no escape. The figure stretches out an arm, or what might have been an arm.
"Welcome," the figure said. Its voice... wasn't. It was like something that had never heard any sort sound before trying to mimic the experience but not quite getting it right. "You have come for the tricks, or treats, I presume?"

Dressed in a puffy pink dress, the beautifully gorgeous Cure Snaw looks at the different coloured doors. The pink one seems the most interesting; it wouldn't hurt going through the only door that matched Snaw's ensemble!
"Hola, mysterious creature!" said Snaw, twirling a white wand in his gloves hand. "I am Cure Snaw, healer of the Earth. I have come to seek candy and a new Element Bottle I may use for evil deeds."
Snaw doesn't see any houses nearby. Sadly, there may not be anything to burn down tonight.....unless the trees were flammable.....

A nearly-toothless woman looks cynically at the colorful doors. She is dressed as a ladybug--her favorite insect, from way back when she was a young'in, 70 years ago--and clutches a purse bursting with old receipts and clean café napkins.
Her eyes squint behind perfectly-round glasses. "Ah, sorry, my hearing isn't really good these days. I would like a trick, please. Eating sweets isn't good for you--I learned that the hard way!" She opens her mouth wide.

The figure nodded at Snaw. "I have no bottles, but I do have some candy."
It reached into itself and pulled out one of the slivers of gold. The creature held the struggling object between two almost fingers and offered it to Snaw. "This is a trapped soul. All the souls I offer are as sweet as the finest candy. If you will allow me a cheesy joke, they have a scream filled center. You can also use it to power spells if you wish."
---------
The figure turned to the older woman. The part of its form where a face could possibly exist formed several lumps that stretched out into something akin to a smile. "I would love to give you a trick."
An endless chorus of screams filled the deepest parts of the woman's mind. Old screams, young screams, screams of confused pain, desperately calling out for help that would never come. They gave no pause, had no moment of blissful silence, they just cried out forever. The screams faded, leaving a slight echo of lingering sorrow.
"I hope you enjoyed the music of my soul collection."

Cure Snaw eyes the mysterious confection. "It may not heal the world, but I do love a good trapped soul!"
Snaw happily dances away, leaving behind a fire that slowly consumes the trees....

The big-cat sized tuxedo cat steps forward with a surprising alacrity, but then stops still when they see what's around them.
"How ominous," the cat telepathically comments. "But do I want a treat, and possibly mess with a soul, or a trick, and possibly incur the wrath of one? ...If nothing else, I have to compliment you on your decorating. You certainly offer something unique."
The cat stands ready. "Let's go for... A trick. I'm already under the effect of some sort of not-trick but something tricky, so let's just see how far it goes."

A preteen girl dressed as a white rabbit carries a guinea pig with a guinea pig sized top hat. The girl speaks. "Oh, those trees made me so nervous, I'm glad to be in this clearing. Where do the doors go to?"
The Guinea Pig says nothing at all, but eyes the figure nervously.

The creature nodded at the large house cat. It pulled another golden bit of light out of its body and held it out. "This candy is also a soul, so you can either eat it or mess with it how about you please. Perhaps you could gnaw off a bit and leave the rest to play around with?"
-------------------
The creature waved the doors, causing them to all shake simultaneously. "These doors are how I collect my souls. Each one leads to a house, or an apartment, a room in a hotel, or other such places. When I need more souls, I pick a door and go through. They are my hunting grounds, so to speak. If you wish to see what is on the other side of a door, I will allow it... for a price. One soul for one peek into a door."

The guinea pig start chittering.
"Oh, I don't know about that," says the girl, "I'll take your word on where they go."
The guinea pig gnaws her teeth, making a slow steady grinding sound.
"I think we'd better get going, but thank you for your hospitality."
The guinea pig looks nervous. The girl is growing nervous as well.

The cat tentatively accepts the candy, and nods in an equally tentative thanks towards the being. They weren't sure about the idea of eating souls, but playing with one... Maybe they could see what they could do with the captive soul, see the kind of magic behind it, later. The cat deposits the candy for now, and for the moment resolves to take in their surroundings, wanting to get a good look before they go.

The creature nodded at the those that remained. It folded in on itself until it was a quivering ball of shadow and condensed slivers of gold. It shook a few times, then exploded outward like a blackhole reversing itself, sending waves of shadow and light.
After the light faded, the doors and the creature were gone. All that remained was an empty clearing, with one single sliver of soul feebly fluttering on the ground. It twitched one last time and went still.
