The Creatively-Named Fic Exchange

Welcome, one and for all!

So, you're heard of gift exchanges and secret, right? And you're doubtlessly familiar with their digital companion, the art exchange? Well, this time, we're doing a fic exchange!

What is a "fic?" Good question! I'm glad you hypothetically asked that! In common parlance, "fic" was originally just an abbreviation of "fanfiction," though it's expanded to mean any sort of short written work. Really, you are writing a sort of story for a character the other person likes--it can be one of their own characters, or just like, a "franchise" character they happen to really like.

What do these fics look like? The vague answer is that they shall look like a Neopian Times short story, since that's a jumping off point that we can all relate to. More specifically:
- The minimum word count is 1,100 words (you can pm to negotiate within that last 100 if you feel like it would add unnecessary bloat)
- The piece does not have to have a traditional plot structure, so long as it has a cogent through-line. So it can be a character exploration, a diary entry, etc etc etc.
- The piece must be in prose. (Or verse--but I doubt you want to write 1100 words of that.)

Now that said, obviously other things apply, like basic editing and whatnot, but that's... common sense and you should be fine otherwise. This isn't meant to be an outrageously difficult task and you can join in whether or not you're a "writer," so long as you put in the effort.

Remember that in a fic exchange, don't sweat about being 100% accurate to the character's style or mood. The entire idea of them is that it's fun to see other people's takes on your (favorite) characters, so if it's a little different or from a different perspective, that's 100% okay.

As to how the writers/receivers are assigned, it will be... sort of random, sort of not. Basically, I'll look at all your character lists and match you up based on who is the most likely to be very familiar with at least one of the characters you listed. From there, they'll be put on a list with other such people from where they'll be randomly assigned to you.

One last thing: this is supposed to be a semi-secret exchange, so if you want, you can send questions to your fic receiver through me.

Here is the form you fill if you want in:

Characters you'd like to have things written about: at minimum, include 3 different "sources" for your characters: they should be a diverse selection of characters and not just from one roleplay, fandom, story, etc, but multiple
Representative writings for each character: if applicable. These should not be Textwall Novels From Hell, but a short story, roleplay post, journal entry, etc that give you a pretty good idea about who this character is
Other written places where these characters show up: if applicable. Nonobligatory reading. You can put your novel here.
Quick summaries of each character: what it says on the tin
Themes you're interested in seeing: Give your writer a few prompts and themes! This is obligatory, and you must list at least 3, no more than 5. If you're a writer, you may deviate from these prompts if you think you'd rather write something else.
Willing to act as a backup writer?: In case someone gets the heebie jeebies and runs. Stuff happens, you don't know.

OPTION 1

Character: Ginz. Yeah, that's... that's me. XD So, if you're an old fogey, you might remember the old NTWF stories. They were fics starring forumers! A lot of the time people were OOC, because you gotta have conflict and antagonists, right? But even so, just seeing you and your friends pop up in the story and get to be heroes or villains was so much fun! I would like something like that, starring me (how very self-centered!). I would love to see Jay and Nova as supporting characters or cameos, and any other forumers you want! (Maybe have Moni ask others if it's okay to include them? Or if they're not participating in the exchange and you want to ask them yourself, go ahead!) I would also love if you included yourself as a character, if you want! Let's go on adventures together!

Character summary: Ginz is friendly and optimistic. She loves art and her favorite color is pink. She's pretty short and has long, straight, dark brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin. Uhhh... what else do you need to know? It's hard to describe myself. You guys know me. And also, I give you freedom to either stay true to my personality or go out of character as it suits the story, so don't worry about it! XD

By the time we returned from the impromptu mile-that-turned-into-three-miles-because-Killix-wouldn’t-let-us-stop run, we were no longer the only ones loitering outside Town Hall: another potential team had arrived in our absence. Dan and Ginz Pines, who lived a few streets away from Icon, Birdy, and me, along with their two teenaged children, Alyssa and Nova. And… I eyed the fifth person with them: a stranger.

When they saw us, Ginz gave a friendly wave. “You’re here bright and early just like us, huh?”

“Even brighter and earlier,” Icon grumbled, massaging at his back.

Ginz politely smiled in reply—and then her eyes fell on Komrade Killix, who was lingering a few feet back from the rest of us, and that smile promptly melted away. Funny what effect she had on people and their affability. Maybe her name should be Komrade Killjoy.

“So,” I said, trying to broach the uncomfortable silence, “you guys are entering the race?”

“Oh yes,” Ginz said, forcing cheer back into her tone. “We thought it would be a good family bonding experience. Right, Dan?”

Dan shrugged. “Sure.”

“And the children are so excited!” she went on.

I glanced at the kids, who did not look excited at all. In fact, they looked as if they’d rather be anywhere else but here: the dentist, the SATs… the morgue. Nova was listening to his iPod and rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet as if he still couldn’t quite believe he was here. Alyssa was sitting on the steps of Town Hall and sketching angrily in a notebook, the slashes of her pencil so furious I was surprised the pages weren’t tearing with each stroke.

“Anyway,” Ginz prattled on, “my brother Jay was coming by for a visit this week already, so we thought we’d include him, too.” She nodded at the stranger, who gave a tepid wave.

“Does he live in Entwuff?” Birdy asked.

“Ah, no, but we asked Mayor Pat, and she said it should be alright.”

“That sounds pretty sketchy,” Komrade Killix piped in, stepping nearer to the Pines and us.

“Well, if Mayor Pat thinks it’s fine, I don’t see how it’s sketchy.” All of the smile in Ginz’s voice was gone; now she seemed a little agitated. Ah, Komrade Killix, inspiring more and more goodwill by the minute. Taking a step closer to Dan, Ginz said, “Well. We’re going to go wait in Town Hall where there’s air conditioning, so…”

“I thought you said you wanted to wait out here because it’s nice weather, dear,” Dan said flatly.

“Oh, did I?” She glowered at him, caught herself, straightened, and then smoothly went on, “I’ve changed my mind. Inside. Let’s go.”

And so as the Pines family disappeared into Town Hall, we were left alone once more.

“I know you want to crush all these people, Komrade,” I said after they were gone, “but seriously, I don’t think we need to make enemies before the Race even starts.”

“But those are the best sorts of enemies,” she responded. “Because they’re the kind you most want to beat.”

“I suppose… but then won’t they also want to most beat us?”

“So what?” Killix shrugged. “They won’t be able to, girl. Trust me—no one is else is nearly as prepared as us. Once this Race gets underway, we’ll leave them in our dust. They’ll choke on it.”

It didn’t seem to occur to Komrade Killix, then, that maybe we would be the ones choking.

Character: Itzel Romero from Wrighton

Character summary: Itzel's parents adopted her when she was a baby, so she has lived in Wrighton all her life (at least as far as she can remember), but even though she's grateful to have a loving family, she's never felt like she belonged in town. Itzel is enthusiastic, passionate, and hardworking. She has wanderlust and dreams of traveling the world learning about all sorts of different cultures and living many adventures!

Character: Dahlia, my D&D character

Character summary: Dahlia is a halfling cleric. She’s really sweet and friendly but perhaps a bit too naive and trusting. She worked as a librarian in her peaceful halfling community before she set off adventuring (kind of against her will at first, but she’s liking it way more than she thought she would!). She’s a huge bookworm and very knowledgable, but quite unexperienced.

Character summary: I'll be honest, I've never really developed my Shoyru as a character... I created him because I got super excited about the origami paint brush, which some of us had 'campaigned' for like 10 years ago. XD He doesn't really have much of a personality or backstory, but I thought I'd throw him in, in case you're not feeling any of the other choices. Who of us isn't familiar with Neopets? I give you all the creative freedom. You may take it and run with it!

Character One: Nyx Nightshadow (Hero City)
Character Summary: Nyx was a supervillain in the forum game Hero City, who conjured magical shield-bubble-things to protect herself in combat, thanks to a mystical amulet. She's self-centered, cruel, theatrical- and wholly obsessed with a) one-upping her heroic nemesis Zenith, and b) bringing down the corporation she blames for her initial fall from grace.
She also has a pet goldfish named Mike.

Character Summary: Annabelle Dionte, better known as 'Dion', is an ancient deep-sea eldritch being disguised as a young human woman, so that she can travel incognito among humans and bring stories back to her friends and family!
During her adventures she acquires new friends, a new perspective, and a paper 'Trash Inspector' hat.
(she was involved in the Wrighton roleplay. The last two Representative Writings below do contain spoilers for that.)

Character Three: Perseverance "Percy"
Character Summary: Percy was the protagonist in a chapter work I wrote to practice writing every day. 
(I left it for months at a time without updating. I was not very good at this daily writing thing.>.>)
He wakes up one day with no memories of who he is or where he's from, outside an unknown village. In spite of this, and in spite of being young and very short/easily intimidated, he lives up to his name and does his best to uncover the mystery of the werewolves plaguing this place. Even though he knows nobody and most people are really mean to him. What a guy!
Has a habit of staring at things he's thinking about.

Character Summary: Zazz studied to become a wizard in Underdark drow society which is, like, super cool and stuff. Their wizards are soooo important because they need to defend Lolth's temples from mean adventurers who want to steal and desecrate all their stuff!!!
He was making very little progress, so his influential family planned to marry him off. Not satisfied with this, Zazz stole a bunch of wizarding secrets from his dad and exchanged them for safe passage to the surface. Suffice to say, he will not be welcome home any time soon. He now spends his days performing magic tricks for coin, being a generally insufferable prettyboy, and reading way too many adventure novels.

Character 1: The Queen

Story- Hero City

Summary-
The Queen is a 20-something pop star, having risen to fame a few years back. Her personal life and backstory remain a mystery to the public, however, as she holds a few dark secrets. 

In a world of metahumans- superpower'd humans- the Queen secretly has powers of her own. She's able to conjure up illusions of just about anything, so long as they remain in contact with her body. They're also able to physically affect the world around them; to take from Steven Universe, they're like holograms with mass. The largest illusion the Queen can currently make is a set of wings with a 12 ft wingspan. 

Orphaned, has serious daddy issues, and has a corrupted mind that switches between sadistic and sympathetic. In Hero City, she's on the side of the villains, blaming the heroes for the death of her father all those years ago. Destructive, impulsive, but with a serious love for flair and performance, the Queen doesn't care what anyone thinks of her so long as she feels good doing what she does.

Character 2: Bloody Mary

Story- Wrighton

Summary-
Fabricated millennia ago as an experiment by an alien scientist lightyears from Earth, although she doesn't remember any of this. Once one half of an ancient alien, Mary now resides in a mirror under the possession of the human, Liz Bishop. Anyone who summons Mary through her mirror transforms into her, and Mary is given temporary physical form. Goes back to her mirror whenever she falls asleep or says the name of whoever summoned her.

Although very intimidating in appearance, at heart Mary is very curious and can be a close friend if treated right. Technically sentient/sapient, but also very animalistic and reliant on survival instincts, she is cautious around strangers and quick to jump at any sudden noises or movements. She's blind, so she experiences the world mainly through smell and sound. 

Eight feet tall, retractable teeth that she can grow and shrink at will, bushy hair, long fuzzy ears, and a large tail that she can raise like a peacock.

• While out on a walk, Mary comes across a stranger who's trying to communicate with her! What do they want? Will Mary trust them?

Character 3: Jonathon Water

Story- Blossoms (Neopets)

Summary-
Born in Altador, but raised in Faerieland, Jonathon was orphaned and taken in by the Faeries at a young age, where he then grew up in the Faerie Castle. With a natural talent for magic, he was also trained to use fire magic and various magical weapons, specifically his Wand of Ultranova. Raised by a fire faerie, Juniper, and has an adoptive sister, Lily, who trains alongside him.

6'6", black hair, dresses in dark/goth clothing, wears eyeliner. Since he grew up in a stereotypically female society without any male role models, he basically had to guess what being a man was all about, hence the attire. He is very shy, often going to great lengths to avoid social interaction, but he's able to open up more once he knows the person. Can have a short fuse, and when frustrated he becomes a lot more impulsive in what he says and does. Accomplishment-driven, gets discouraged or angry when he falls short on a goal. 

A fan of food, especially Shenkuuvian food. Also a fan of animals, as he loves playing with the petpets of the Faerie Castle. Especially has a love for Meowclops and other feline petpets. Practicing magic can be meditative for him, and he often carries his wand with him as a comfort item.

I'd recommend reading the main arcs of Blossoms (linked above) to get a full picture of Jonathon, but below I also mention some more specific comics that showcase his personality

• Retry- Arc intro'ing Jonathon, specifically in part 3, part 9 gives his backstory, part 10 shows his short temper and Wand of Ultranova in use
• Snowball Effect- This arc, starting with part 5, shows more facets of Jonathon. Specifically, how he can be petty/temperamental, his interests (including food), and how he acts once he's opened up to people.
  
• Halloween Comic- Showcases some more Jonathon awkwardness, plus the process of how he tries to get out of social situations and how he acts during them
• A Week in the Life- Jonathon in all sorts of every day activities

• An important leader is visiting Faerieland, and it's up to Jonathon to briefly keep them company while they wait for Fyora! Is he up to the task?
• Today's magic lesson is all about a new spell, but Jonathon is struggling to pick it up compared to the others. It doesn't take long for his patience to run thin, how might this turn out?
• It's Jonathon's first winter at Terror Mountain, which means many days of heavy snow, frigid temperatures, and tourists coming in for the holiday season. Can he deal?

Character Description. Khamet is a good boye paladin who doesn't like murder* and also worships Anhur, the God of war! He may not physically harm you that much, but he will definitely run rhetorical circles around you until you completely forget why you hated him in the first place! It's not only his rhetoric that is consistently distractible, though, that's just the way his mind works.
(*The term "murder" applies only to people, and demons aren't people and also don't feel pain, therefore it's 100% to kill them on sight. In fact, it is an Objective Good.)
He is from an ancient-Egypt-"inspired" land from far away! It is a very strange place, with God-Kings and Obelisks to commune with the dead and even talking cats! He decided to leave it though to see the world and log it in his handy-dandy journal (an entry of which is included in the representative writings), and he also fills this journal with Incredible Fiction "loosely" based off real events and people!
Since he is from far away, though, he can have his moments of... cultural sensitivity. And by that I mean he's totally a cultural chauvinist sometimes. A lot of the time. Most of the time. Meet a good drow? Wow, how admirable it is that she fights against her savage nature! Wood elves? All look the same, can't tell the difference between them! Gnomes? So adorable, they're like permanent children! etc.
Other things about this character that you would probably put on a tinder profile: extremely handsome, takes facial hair grooming to the next level, likes dogs, dislikes cats, dislikes forests, likes the sun, is looking for his One True Soulmate... all around a great guy that DOESN'T HAVE PROBLEMS WITH DATING OR ROMANCE OR ANYTHING and totally doesn't have a disastrous love life, nope!
Prompts.
1. Khamet has traveled to multiple different locations! What medieval fantasy setting that's... sort of plausible in DnD-verse... did he travel to, and what shenanigans does he get up to there?
2. Khamet decides to write a totally-original, 100% Cool Story with a totally-not-self-insert-main-character in one of your favorite fictional settings! How does he go about it?
3. Khamet decides to go to an amusement park for a day! So many things! So many modern technologies! So many shinies! What does he do?
(you may feel free to ignore these prompts if you want to do something completely different, etc etc. i welcome wacky and out-there ideas!)

Option 2 - Lissandre! (Neopian Times/Neopets)

Other Written Places.Duplicity (yes, really, the entire thing) -- this is really her main story | Short stories in which she generally appears (1,2,3,4,5)
Character Description. Lissandre!!! Is!!!! The!!! Best!!! Sorceress!!! To!!! Have!!! Ever!!! Lived!!! And don't you forget it, you Meridellian plebian, because she hails from ~Brightvale~, only the most prestigious of kingdoms, and one that's much better than Meridell. She is the youngest faculty member in Brightvale University; her current work involves time magic, though she previously worked in ... magical agriculture, funded generously by the Darigan Citadel.
Lissandre, of course, will let you know this... again, and again, and again, and again, and will assert her kingdom's superiority at every turn. When the chips are down, though, she will actually do something and exhibit ... gasp... bravery and compassion, which she will subsequently deny ever happened. In fact, if she ever has any negative emotions, you'll never know about it, because it will be covered up with a beautifully calculated smile.
As expected from a true visionary like her, Lissandre has a lot of friends in weird and high places throughout the medieval fantasylands of Neopia. She's connected; almost *too* connected. These people include General Galgarroth, Princess Roberta, and most recently, Lisha of Meridell! Lisha's brother, though, is a complete brute and drag, and she and Jeran are... not... on good terms... with each other.

Character Description. Fireflyman, once upon a time, was a firefly. Then he got bitten by a radioactive human. Then weird gene stuff happened, and ka-blam! He became a fireflyman, complete with homo sapien things, like intelligence, longer life spans, complicated relationships... and existential crises! This wonderful gift of humanity has driven him to drinking from time to time. Unfortunately, he has a super-powered liver, so he can't really dissolve his brain in ethanol to achieve fireflydom again.
He works... in Heraclia... for a major superhero corporation! His powers are that he can fly... and glow... and... uhhhhh... many good powers! His eclectic firefly-like behavior certainly makes him very appealing to the child demographic! He works in a lab with Dr. Faust, who is a perfectly morally-good scientist from America, and taught him most everything he knows!
Fireflyman--or, in his daily life, simply Daniel Hirsh--has a lot of book smarts, not necessarily a lot of street smarts, and his preferred way of dealing with issues is to a) ignore them or b) write paper reports on them. He is somewhat careless and irresponsible. If you want an example of this irresponsibility, look no further... than the multiple kids he sired back when he was a firefly! And he never paid child support or anything! What a deadbeat dad... and also... he might have caused a coma among a fellow superhero... but that's not a problem! He fixed it, so it's okay!

Character summary: 24 years old during the roleplay, pansexual, popular A-list superhero, Tall, can fly, can shoot hand blasts, immune to bludgeoning damage (kinetic absorber), chronic anxiety, responsible, reliable and shy, they Protec, they Attac, ridiculously wholesome and functional family, immense fondness for rabbits.

Family is a biological mum+sister and an adoptive mum+sister and two pet rabbits.

If any moving object collides with Zenith, it stops instantly as they absorb the impact and it contributes to the energy pool that fuels their flight and hand blasts. If Zenith collides into an unmoving object, that doesn't work. They stub their toe and all. Stabby things still stab them - albeit slower. The hand blasts are only force; they can feel like punches, giant punches, or a truck at full speed concentrated in the size of a finger flick.

Ayo also happens to be the reincarnation of an alien spaceship captain who was a space snake and a literal empath.
They feel a lot of the guilt and responsibility for: being unable to prevent a nightmarish embodiment of everyone's wanderlust from haunting the ship, stranding all those aliens on this planet, and keeping generations of humans tied to these memories for centuries.
