So about Trick-or-Treat, first, fear not, for that's still going on this year, and will be coming soon! All the rules will basically be the same as the previous years. You'll all have a chance to put up a “house” (thread), from which you will dispense treats (or tricks) in whatever creative way you can imagine, and then you can go trick-or-treating at others' houses, participating however you see fit (within reason)! If you're unfamiliar and interested, you can check out the Graveyard of Trick or Treat in Memory Lane to get an idea.
That'll all be as before. There's just been one longstanding issue with coordinating this event that I'd like to discuss so that we can all come to a reasonable solution. The issue is with the timing.
See, Trick-or-Treat (henceforth ToT) was always meant to be a short deal, always happening right around Halloween because that's when it best fits. If it's too soon or goes on too long, then the spirit will die out pretty quickly and the novelty will wear out, and I don't want to induce that kind of fatigue in people. (Which is why I advocate keeping house arcs relatively short to remain within the time period.) I basically don't want it to be too stretched out.
But I've been wondering if the timeframe is too short?
Putting aside NTWF-events that have overlapped this event, which I don't expect to happen this year, there's still other events (namely IRL events) and Life that may still overlap, especially given the holiday nature of Halloween. Of course I want to give people time to do those things and not feel like they have to dedicate all their time to a forum event. Between that and the time it takes between ToT posters and housekeeper responses (which is a consideration in and of itself), I wonder if there isn't enough room for it all.
In the recent past, the event has been held for ~4 days, with the first day being dedicated to people putting up their houses and the trick-or-treating not starting till the next day. This year, I want to extend this by at least one day. I still want things to be done by the 2nd to have it fit with Halloween. (I generally have a soft end cap of November 1st, but typically I don't close things till the 2nd because things tend to run over. I'd rather people get their endings in and get some closure than I stick to a semi-arbitrary end date.) But I could possibly start the event earlier.
What I wonder is, do people want more time than 5-day period? I don't think I want it to go longer than a week because I don't want there to be too much event-fatigue for something that's supposed to be short. For me, 5 days seems ideal, but I don't know what people are thinking. What do you prefer?
(Also, is giving a time period for people to put up their houses--before the event officially begins--helpful? Or should I just allow people to dive right into it?)
If people are fine with a 5-day period, then trick-or-treating can start on the 28th, with the possible option of opening the subboards on the 27th so people can start putting up houses if they want. That's one day earlier than last year.
Basically, give your opinions and thoughts below, and I'll take them into consideration when planning the event.
