The Neopian Times is a great source of stories and comics but with it comes the restriction that all its content must be appropriate for children. Does anyone know where I can go if I want to view more mature Neopets content?

I'm not clear what you mean by mature, exactly. I've honestly seen people get away with some fairly dark and mature themes in the Neopian Times if they played them subtly, and my understanding is that since Scrappy started as editor the bar for what is or is not permissible is a lot higher.

Tumblr has a pretty active Neo community, and a lot of characters and stories there delve more into topics like sexuality, violence, and the like that is next to impossible getting into the NT. Which depends on if that's what you're looking for regarding mature content, but that'd be my first suggestion, at least.

You could try more general sites that allow fan works like Archive of our Own (for writing) and deviantArt (for art). Not sure how much, if anything, you'd find - but again, it depends on what you're looking for. Shinko seriously, I read some CRAZY stuff in the Times last Halloween >_> And that was after I fretted that MY Halloween story would be too dark. |

A lot of the general sites have stuff that is... not very quality-controlled--which is like, the regular fanfiction environment of most fandoms. The NT is nice in that you get things at least a little filtered in that regards, even though the NT has never been full of amazing, stellar stuff 100% of the time. It'll be a crapshoot.
I just did a quick sweep of the major general sites and they seem to have sooome things. It's not a lot, but it's there. But for fun: one of the top results I saw on fanfiction.net was a kass/jeran fic which... I have no amount of "yikes" appropriate enough for that concept.

And then the other part of me is going "I want to read it just to see the pure insanity it must be". (No, don't send me the link, the former part beats out the latter part). But now it's making me think up of other "pairings", lol. |

Like an AAA/Abigail one which took place inside a very specific spot in the bathroom. I couldn't chug enough brain bleach for that one!
But one non-PWP story that definitely proves too much for the NT that I DID enjoy despite its grammatical errors in places involves the soup faerie, a kacheek child, the pound, social commentary, and a red Lupe.

I totally ship Jazan/Hanso (it'd be a better love story than Jazan/Nabile and has just as much buildup (~~~look at me, throwing shade at LDP's story even though I have no writing talent~~~).) But did you know I ALSO ship Fyora/Kass? That's right, that is the most sensible ship and these characters totally go together because THEY ARE BOTH PURPLE. ... but yeah, because of the way we classify "adult" media, it doesn't mean that an "adult" neopets site necessarily has more complex themes than anything you can find in the Neopian Times. We don't classify based on complexity, but rather how much sex and gore is in something. (I suppose the exception to this is if you're into romance, which Neopets historically just hasn't liked no matter how kid-friendly it is.) |

If you're just talking about things that traditionally are not allowed in the NT that are otherwise innocuous, like telephones, blood, and dating, Tumblr is probably your best bet for "mature" fan content. If you're talking about anything beyond that, it's mostly kept out of the public eye on private/locked social media accounts so children (and the now-former TNT) don't find it and scar themselves for life by accident. And I forgot that fanfiction existed until you mentioned it, Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff). Thanks for nothing! |
