I've been so inspired by all you guys' drawing threads here (and the hard work and progress seen in them!) that I decided to create a thread to share some of my own doodles and sketches. And that's all they'll be at the moment, lol, because I rarely seem to go beyond the sketch phase... So the first works here are all rough and messy and unfinished (and old!), but I'm hoping that by posting these doodles here that I'll be motivated to finally finish them! ^^ Because these are the ones that I like enough to want to see them finalized. These are initially all old stuff since I haven't been drawing much lately (I'm a bit hard on myself when it comes to art, so that's caused me to form a hate-love relationship with drawing), but I'm hoping to re-discover that joy I used to feel about it. Also, since I'm rusty, I want to get back to where I was skill-wise before I stopped. o.o So here goes! Since this is a Neo forum, I decided to start off with a Neo-related sketch! Meet a very eager Kau reminiscent of Hermione in class, lol. And yes, I doodled this on my programming notes, haha. I'll come back and edit these posts once I've made edits/finalized the sketch!

Because Ariel's my girl, I love drawing her, haha. xD Ariel profile - planning on drawing her sitting on a rock. Also, ignore the awkward cropping - there were all these messy, ugly scribbles and mess-ups that I didn't want to show, lol. Pouty Ariel - "Betcha on land, they understand..." The proportions are all horrible in this, haha...I gotta work on that. Like, her hips and shells, for one. Any constructive criticism on how I can improve these poses is welcome! ^^

Here is just some random girl and guy...I love the girl's expression and hair, so I want to finish this! Plus, the guy needs the rest of his hair drawn in! You can kinda see where I'd erased the top of his head, lol. I have a lot of trouble drawing torsos and hair, so please advise if you have any suggestions for improvement! ^^ Lol, I kinda erased an awkward part of that dude...haha, whoops.

I've recently gotten back into the Miraculous Ladybug craze (thanks in part to the Clubhouse thread here and the fact that the new season is finally back and I need to catch up so I can talk about it with you guys and my IRL friend, haha), and so I wanted to do a simple fanart for it~ And I was determined to finish and upload it today, so yeah. So here's my favorite camembert-loving kwami! ^^ Line art - It's such a simple head, and yet I *still* manage to erase it all and rework it, oh, my gosh... -___- Colored version! Wanted to try something new...I used a combo of India ink and watercolor colored pencils. (I still don't know how to use them skillfully, lol. Late Inktober? xD

I like the colored version a lot! India Ink is very unwieldy (and it *stains!* I dropped india ink onto a pair of pants in middle school and despite my repeated wash-wearings of it it has not gone away.) Watercolored pencils are life though, they're really convienient to use!

Watercolored pencils are life though, they're really convienient to use! Thanks so much! ^^ And omg, I'll have to keep that in mind! I had no idea India ink could be so dangerous to clothes, lol. That's...that's a really long time for that stain to persist...Though I have noticed that once you dump clothing with a stain on it in the wash without trying to get it out first...it's doomed. D: Ooh, I should practice with them more then! (And research ways they can be used...) They kind of are my stand-in for watercolor *and* colored pencils since I misplaced my good Prismacolor colored pencils when I moved back from college and well...I don't do watercolor much, though I'd like to start. ^^

Some recent Neo sketches~ Babaa! <3 I drew this without a reference (initially)! So you can probably tell, lol. I made its face too long and messed up on its feet, so I had to correct that once I did look up a picture of a Babaa. So that's why it looks like it's wearing a headband, haha. My sister told me to put in the little hearts. <3 ^^ And because of the plot, it seemed a good idea to draw a wraith! First wraithy sketch: Drawing wraiths are harder than you'd think. D: I kept looking at references, and I had previously done a sort of "study" on its features...but yeah. After some very lame attempts, I just decided to let it be simple and let go. So I just did whatever and had fun putting in random swirly stuff in places. So this is what I came up with! I think it turned out pretty well. :3 Revised wraithy sketch: I did notice my initial wraithy was rather lopsided, so I corrected that. :3 That side now looks loads better than the other side. Colored Wraithy! And the colored version! I used watercolor colored pencils for the purple (and then went back in to darken it without watering it down) and India ink. Tried to do a gradient transition at the bottom...I still need to work with ink wash stuff. Anyway, yeah! My wraithy! ^^ Lol, I should just consider this my belated Inktober stuff. I did want to ink a wraith for that...Now I should do one for GMC! Haha, ghostly Nox allows me to do the same ink-watercolor colored pencils combo again.

So I just watched Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, and I am very much in a HA! mood - instantly started watching fanvids that reminded me both of how good the episodes were (and that I need to rewatch them STAT! OMG all those ADORABLE Helga/Arnold moments! SQUEE! xD) and that I kinda miss making HA! videos. :3 Long story short, I found a new favorite fanvid and song that I love, so watch this space for a sketch dump of HA! fanart goodness, inspired by the lyrics of this song and the cute Helga/Arnold moments - in short, this fanvid. :3 (Also, please no Jungle Movie spoilers, as I actually haven't finished the last 5-10 minutes - the quality crapped out on me (a loading problem?), and after waiting this long for a conclusion to my favorite cartoon ever, I am not watching it in crappy quality!) I think I'll work with colored pencils on toned (sepia) paper for these sketches. ...Except I only have watercolor colored pencils which don't seem the same to me?? Chalk pastels seem good too, except I've misplaced those as well as my regular colored pencils. T-T (TO THE ART STORE! Oh, but they closed my favorite one...D: ) Hmm...or maybe charcoal pencil & white colored pencil? "At the same time I wanna hug you, I wanna wrap my hands around your neck" "And you make me so mad I ask myself why I'm still here" "You're the only love I've ever known" "But I hate you / I really hate you so much I think it must be true love" "Truuuuuue loooooove / It must be truuuuuue loooove" "Nothing else can break my heart like true love" "No one else can break my heart like you" And since you probably checked this out to see artwork, here's a little something that will be in a future NT comic (well, I mean, if it's accepted) about the current plot. It's unrelated to this, but I feel it fits my current mood, as it's a sketch of my Baby Brucey fangirling. :3 Gonna fix the image tomorrow when I wake up, but since I *need* to post *something* regarding my fangirly feelings right now, here t'is. But the first legit art post you'll see will be that GMC Magax/Nox drawing I mentioned in my previous post. I'm hoping to get it in the Art Gallery (if I can finish it in time...how late can you submit a picture??), otherwise I'd post my progress here like, NOW. I'm...only just finishing the line art, and yet, I still need to ink it...

Lol, okay, I'm so not finishing that Magax/Nox drawing anytime soon, it would seem. OTZ I finally finalized the line art and then realized I didn't like how Nox looked...so starting over with that! Hahahahaha...ha. *curses perfectionist tendencies* Anyway, here's some progress pictures. :3 So like, after copying reference images and making some exploratory pen sketches to see what pose I wanted, I labored on my pencil sketch. Magax came first. And then I traced the sketch onto tracing paper and made some adjustments to his head (like, lowered his facial features). I messed with Magax's face a lot. I wasn't happy with it since I wanted him to look down more... Then I went back to pen sketches to see how to go about shading and lighting and all that jazz. I like his head position here better than my line art... And then I did the same for Nox, but I guess combined both pose and shading into one! No, actually, I just sketched out the pose, and then later on I shaded it in. Because I wanted to feel like I was making progress, lol. I was quite pleased with this sketch - he looked the right amount of creepy and evil that I was going for - and then proceeded to trace it for my pencil line art. [to be included] After many tracings, I finally put it together. Then wanted to cry because my rough pen sketches were SOOOOO much better than the "final" pencil drawings. And I was not happy with Nox after comparing him to my pen sketch - he didn't look menacing enough and the angle was wrong. UGH. So this is when I decided this would not do, and I need to redo Nox's drawing. I traced my pen sketch as far as his head and cape were concerned (I'd already previously traced his face). So yeah. Because I don't want to wait anymore, and it'll be late for a GMC-related Art Gallery anyway, I decided to post all this up here. I'm tired. And I have so many other ideas. But OH MY GOSH this does not bode well for my future drawings. I'm still so finicky about it all! -___- Well, at least I have this sketch to practice my inking. I was nervous about ruining it with ink, as I do not have much experience with inking or shading or lighting. D: So anyway, *eventually* this will be all done and finished, and maybe you'll see it in the Art Gallery in like, 8 months or so. -___- But yeah. This is exactly the reason I tend to sketch with pen in a cheap lined notebook. It's a psychological thing. Because it helps me to not try to perfect every single detail. Since I'm drawing with pen, I can't erase mistakes, so I just have to make do. And sketching on cheap paper means I'm not wasting the nice, expensive paper found in legit sketchbooks. :3 Eventually I'll get over this (I hope), but for now, it seems it means my pen work will get pretty good. (edit 7.12.2020: decluttering imgur so re-uploading some meh sketches via tapatalk)

charming thieveryInk sketches! I had the same problem as you so I basically resorted to making ballpoint pen my sketch item of choice for a few years... it wasn't until I got a pencil back and relearned the sweet luxuries of being able to fix your lines and proportions--ha! I like that you're drawing little pen thumbnail sketches before you move on to the actual thing! It's good practice to get a feel for composition and stuff! I actually really like the way you sketch a lot! You're definitely very loose and dynamic when you get to them. x)

I actually really like the way you sketch a lot! You're definitely very loose and dynamic when you get to them. x) Ooh, so I'm not the only one who felt the need to sketch with a pen...I just hate it because every time I draw with a pencil, I always end up erasing the whole thing to start over (and that's after several other times of trying to fix mistakes... -___-), so by the time I get a final product, the paper is messed up and I don't wanna work on that drawing anymore, lol. So that's why I never really get much further than a sketch - I spent so much time on it, I don't want to end up ruining it with ink or coloring! Lol, I should actually focus more on figuring out the composition in a thumbnail sketch, actually. Like, the whole composition, not only a part of it. I definitely had some trouble rearranging MAGAX and Nox so they fit together well in that circle/oval. And thanks! The pen sketches *had* to be the complete opposite of how I tend to draw with pencil...so I really like being loose and not too caught up with the little details. (Sorry it took so long to reply to this.)

charming thievery your art is amazing! I love the flow your art has, and your proportions are pretty spot-on. I struggle a lot with keeping everything sized correctly, ugh. Also, the ink sketch of Magax? OH MY GOODNESS. I love the crosshatch technique for shading (it's typically what I do with my sketches), and you really crafted an intense atmosphere. Seriously, I love your art! As for using pens to sketch, I totally get where you're coming from. I get so focused on one aspect of my piece, that I kind of block out everything else that needs to be completed until I work the one section to death. Using pen really does force you to accept all the little mistakes and correct/compensate as you work on the piece further. Pen sketches really encourages, er ... patience. Haha. Have you submitted anything to the Art Gallery yet? I definitely would love to see more of your finished work if you're comfortable sharing!

Spookie Aww! Thanks for your lovely comments! ^^ Haha, I'm really proud of how the pen sketches turned out that I'm afraid what I have planned for the "final" version won't be as good, lol. Ha, it's awful how that works, isn't it?? Like, I'll overwork one detail (or more), and when I finally settle on something, I decide I don't like it after all and erase the whole thing. My pencil sketches are *never* clean. That's the part that makes me so frustrated! Like, will it ever get easier?? Haha. So pen sketches on cheap notebook paper make it easier for me to just sketch whatever and be loose and free! Especially since I tend to get all these grand plans in my head that I ultimately never finish or even start. -__- Oh, I think I will post a link to any Art Gallery entries here once there are any. I don't have a lot of finished drawings to show off at the moment, sigh.

Ohhhh, man, when I let myself fall into an unproductive rut, it lasts a long time, haha. I *still* haven't finished my Magax/Nox drawing either! OTZ And when I was looking through the old Art Gallery pages (part of my TFR Archives project), I saw TWO Magax drawings that had the same similar dark background with his ball of energy lighting his face - there was even one with the EXACT. SAME. POSE. I mean, mine is different enough, what with the inclusion of Nox, but still. Anyways! I do have art to show off! Actual finished art! I drew this for my friend, and since she has now seen it (I wanted her to be the first), then I feel I can post it here now. :3 Sorry for the fuzzy quality... Pen sketch concept: Lineart: Watercolor (pencils): I like the soft quality here, and you can see the volume, but alas, they blend into the background too much... Final: My inking skills still need work (so I'm partial to my pencil linework), but I'm pretty proud of how it turned out! ^^ My next art piece is my plot comic, though I fear it doesn't quite work anymore, now that the wraiths are actually neopets. D: I mean, I suppose I can tweak it to work, but...I dunno. This is what happens when I take forever to finish stuff, ha.

That is such a cute scene, charming thievery! I love all the little Bruces' expressions and interactions, they're so much fun to look at! It's such a sweet illustration. ^_^ It's nice to see the progress too, it's so cool to get to see how it went from the initial concept sketch to the finished piece!
