Oh, hi, there! You’ve arrived just in time; I just started setting up an altar for Day of the Dead, and I could really use your help! You’ve heard of Day of the Dead, right? It’s a holiday celebrated in Mexico on November 1st and 2nd, in honor of our loved ones who have passed away. It is said that in those days, they come back to earth to be with us again. We set up altars for them, to help guide them and find their way home, and we fill them with offerings for them, to celebrate their presence. Some common things to put in altars are pictures, food and drinks, flowers, candles, and personal objects, it can be anything with emotional significance or simply things they used to love. As you can see, though, this altar is still pretty empty. Do you have any offerings you’d like me to put on it? I think it’d be great if we all collaborated on it! … oh, I’m sorry! You’re here to trick or treat, aren’t you? Halloween is a pretty awesome holiday too! Don’t worry, I do have some treats to share as well! It wouldn't be fair for me to ask but not give anything in return!

A hooded figure swishes in dramatically, but stops as they look over the altar, and listen carefully to the explanation. They suddenly grow somber.
"That sounds lovely," they say. "And... rather appropriate. Hang on, I should have something..."
They rummage through their belongings for some time, and end up pulling out a flashlight. "Hmm, I was looking for a candle, but I don't really carry those around. Besides, those don't give much light, do they? But the flashlight has good batteries, enough to last a while. And it produces quite a bit of light, enough to help guide them. Besides... electronic support was important."
They set down the flashlight on the altar. "Hopefully you get a good amount! I can come back with more things if you want, but it's up to you. Besides, I should wait to see how others contribute first."
They wave and step away from the altar. Then they pause. "Oh, I guess technically I was here to trick-or-treat, but I'm fine just doing this. Unless you want to give me something."

The girl in the bootlegger costume tilts her head as she listens, then nods. "That makes sense, it's a good thought. I ah, dunno if I have much on me with emotional significance, hang on a sec..."
After popping out various items- cherry bombs, flasks of gin, candy, knives- she finally up with a slightly bedraggled looking handful of poppies.
"This seems fitting, if you know anything about the symbolism of poppies," she remarks, holding the flowers out and wincing as a few petals fall off. "Hopefully it's okay?"

In her plaid cape, Lizica listens with an expression that is a mixture of sorrow and admiration. "That's wonderful," she says at length. "Thank you. Will you be here long? I'll be right back."
She leaves and returns some time later with a small plate of sauteed pierogi and onions, and she puts it on the altar. "You said that food can be put here, right? This was something we had every year."

The woman strokes the nose of her percheron as she listens to the explanation about the Day of the Dead. Even if you cannot see her eyes, she looks solemn and thoughtful. "This is a good thing to do. Both for the dead and for the living. Perhaps I can be of service."
She returns from her caravan eventually with gold ribbon, which she drapes artfully across the altar. Atop it, she sets a large candle into a golden ring that faintly glows. After lighting the candle, the lady places a blank notebook into the altar, takes out a feather quill and ink and writes something into it. "The names of those we wish to remember can be recorded here, so they can see they have not been forgotten. Anybody is welcome to use it. I have put down something, now all of you can write somebody else's name."

Her face brightens up to see her first visitor. "Ahh, that's perfect! Thank you so much!" She says as they set a nice flashlight on the altar. "I know it can be sad to think of those who aren't here with us anymore," she adds as she notices her visitor looks a bit somber, "but Day of the Dead is a celebration of life too. We're setting up for a party where they're the guests of honor!" "I would definitely like to give you something for your generosity!" Ginz pulls out a basket full of colorful sugar skills from underneath the altar. "Here, this one's for you!" she says, handing one to hooded figure. "I hope you like it!" The girl in the bootlegger costume tilts her head as she listens, then nods. "That makes sense, it's a good thought. I ah, dunno if I have much on me with emotional significance, hang on a sec..." Ginz is impressed by how many items the bootlegger pops out. She wouldn't have known she was carrying all that stuff! Finally, she presents her with a handful of flowers. "I'm afraid I don't know about the symbolism of poppies, so I'll have to look that up, but they seem perfect. Thank you!" she says, picking out another sugar skull from her basket, and handing it to the girl. "Here you go, something for your trouble!" In her plaid cape, Lizica listens with an expression that is a mixture of sorrow and admiration. "That's wonderful," she says at length. "Thank you. Will you be here long? I'll be right back." She leaves and returns some time later with a small plate of sauteed pierogi and onions, and she puts it on the altar. "You said that food can be put here, right? This was something we had every year." "Sure, I'll be around! I'm hoping to get this all set up by November 1st, so I should keep working on it so it'll be ready just in time!" Later, Ginz smiles when she sees the girl with the plaid cape return. She sets a dish on the altar. It's something Ginz has never eaten before but that looks really good. "Yes, food is great! What's a party without food, right? Thank you so much, it sounds special." "Before you go again, please take this!" *** (Your offerings have been added to the altar! "And that's a great idea too, to record the names of our loved ones. It'll be like writing a dedication," Ginz says, and approaches the altar to write a couple of names in the notebook. "Thank you so much! Please accept this as a token of my gratitude," she says, handing the woman a sugar skull. (Your offerings have been added to the altar! Check the first post to see them. ^^ I went all out with the gold ribbon as you can see! XD) *** Ginz steps back to take a look at the altar. It's definitely not looking quite so bare now! She's very grateful to everyone who's contributed to far, and she can't wait to see who else comes along, and what they'll bring.

I approach the altar from the side, so as not to upset the brilliant orange petals strewn so carefully across the floor, and gently place a kitty plushie on the altar to welcome the loved ones home. Hopefully it will be a friend and comfort on their journey. I'm pretty sure it's a plushie.

One of the two zombies turns to Thorn, waving his disembodied pinky finger. "Could I put this there? It was very important to me and all." "Eww, gross, no," Thorn swats his arm aside, and moves to place a violin on the altar. "She played a few instruments, but the violin was her favourite." Ginz this is the absolute BEST, I love this and you are amazing. <3 Such a nice idea!
We used to have a Christmas tree in the mall back home, where you could put up a little star with a message to a deceased loved one on it. This reminds me of that, it's a lovely tradition.

"Ooh, yeah, I have heard of the Day of the Dead before," a young woman in dark fashion says, "I've never gotten to participate it in before, though."
Fixing her black feather boa and adjusting the straps to her ebony wings, she thinks for a minute on what to offer.
"Oh, I think I've got something...!" She says, heading back towards the door with a pointing finger indicating that she'll be right back.
When she returns, there's a thin box in her hands, its contents rustling.
"I've got plenty of these, and I thought it might be something good to give," she says. The offering turns out to be a full box of colored pencils.
"They have personal meaning to me, but I also think that the diversity and vibrancy of color says something to the celebration of life and loved ones. And all the different colors, and together as a rainbow, usually have a number of different meanings for people, often hopeful, so..." She places the box next to the other gifts, "Hope they like it."

"Maybe you can share this with them, or keep to yourself if you prefer!" She says as she hands you a sugar skull. As the evening of Halloween comes to an end, Ginz figures it's time to add her own offering to the altar. At the bottom of her basket lays one last sugar skull, slightly bigger than the rest had been. She takes it in her hands and looks at it fondly, reading the inscription on it.
She places it on top, and finally, the altar looks complete. ((Hey guys, I'm gonna close up shop now! ^^; Thank you so much to everyone who collaborated to make our beautiful NTWF Day of the Dead altar! I couldn't have done it without you! I hope you had fun, because I sure did, drawing all the offerings! I think it came out lovely, and I hope you like it too! <3))
