Ooh, I love both the mushrooms' designs and the prose that accompanies them! All of it gives them a mysterious and intriguing, yet also threatening, atmosphere. The rows of eyes plus that one magical anime eye xD are a great idea, and the contrast of the bright lavender against the boggy backdrop adds to their mystique and danger.
Your past couple character pieces are also looking really cool! Impressive dynamic poses, and the designs have interesting story and personality behind them. Is there anything in particular about shading that you're looking to work on? I think your placement of shadows is good, and also good is that they're made with color rather than black. Any advice I might give right now would be to try pushing the shading's contrast even more. Make the darkest shadows even more prominent, and the highlights more pronounced, all to create a larger gradient of dark to light. Not every piece out there needs super dramatic lighting, but pushing the shading can still help with depth and our control of it!
Loving all the art you've been making lately, it's really cool getting to see your creative endeavors for both fan art and original content! =D

Twillie: Thank you! yes I enjoy tossing random anime jokes into things I think the biggest hurdles I've been facing with shading are using it to show volume and texture, not just light source. Like if you compare the hair on my last character drawing to e.g. the Zelda OC higher up on that page, the Zelda OC's hair is shaded more like... a lightly textured cardboard cutout Whereas just before that last one I followed a tutorial and was like "Ohhh OK I can't just pillow-shade, I have to take a small brush and block in swatches of hair with a few different shades to show texture and to emphasize the curve of the ringlets. OK got it" and like it's not perfect but it was a much-needed change in technique. And re:volume I think I'm managing to make rounded shapes look more convincing now, just with the placing of the highlights and where they begin to taper off. At this point I think I need to start trying different types of textures like different fabrics, stone, skin, etc. and see if I can sort out how to do those. (Shading on faces in particular is eluding me, I always end up erasing 90% of it because it looks so weird by the time I'm done)

Ah yeah, I get what you mean about texture! A good rule of thumb there is to color/shade in the direction the object is going, like with hair the shadows and light will follow the direction they lead, be it up and down, in a curling or wavy pattern, etc. They don't have to be super defined, though, and a little shaping can go a long way rather than trying to draw every individual strand or blade of grass. I also like to use line art to help with volume and texture, and I'll often hug my shadows to one line or another like guidelines lol.
Augh yeah, faces are tricky for sure xP I'm not the best at face shading either, but something that I think helped me was studying a variety of lighting angles and conditions on the face. Both dramatic (over and under lighting, half the face cast in shadow, single source lighting) and subtle effects (like filled studio lighting) shows how light can interact with the face, and from that you can start to notice patterns like which features are usually highlighted, which are often in shadow, and how many planes the face can have. This is something I discovered from university figure drawing class, and after doing similar exercises I noticed I had a more confident face shading technique.

Liou requested I draw some of the DnD Disaster Party fingerpainting with their adopted fiend babby. Left to right: Meallan (Celestial), Wisp (aforementioned fiend babby), Basil (Me), Tally (Liou). I'm actually super happy with this one, esp. the lighting

Huh? GOAT is evolving!! OK so in the DnD Euroatlantis campaign there's a special weapon called the god-forger that can turn you into a god under the right circumstances. A major villain had been after it for a while, and me and Thorn briefly discussed a possible plot twist where Basil could thwart her by grabbing it at the last second and using it on the next available target, which would end up being his ordinary pet goat. Whose name is Shenanigoat. Sadly it didn't shake out that way but I loved the idea of turning a random goat into a deity and I had a design in my head so I had to draw it lol. So here she is, featuring hasty bgs and shading I gave up on

This one was giving me absolute fits until I eventually finished it, hated it, and started from scratch. It's so much better this go-round holy cow. Note to self, just junk everything and take a breather if you feel like you're hitting a brick wall. Another OC from this loose fantasy WIP. Was just winging it on her hair but now I want her style tbh. Edit: What's that you say? The first version I posted had an incorrect trans flag? Nope couldn't have been me. Must have been the uh. Tablet gremlins.

Moar DnD, this time Anthony (Thundy) and Tyzol! Thundy plays a bard who is also a time-traveler, so all his spells are apps lol. I don't really draw any kind of anthro characters so Tyzol's head took some figuring out, also I went more comic-booky on the shading and facial features to match the vibe.

Smallmariofindings on tumblr posted a bit from an interview revealing that there was intended to be a Chain Chomp in Gerudo Valley right up until the end of OoT's development, and I needed to do a warmup drawing to get back into the swing of it, so here's Canika again. Yes, her little angel there absolutely bites, and yes, she is absolutely proud of that fact

More from DnD Euroatlantis! Moni OK HERE'S KHAMET Honestly I took like 999 years on this 'cause I couldn't find a pose that grabbed me to save my life. Then finally I thought to look at weapon stances. Moni described Khamet's weapon, the Osseus Metallicum, as being a key-shaped piece of metal, which I figured was similar enough to a halberd, so I ran on youtube and looked at halberd demonstrations to get a pose ref for both the stance and the handling. She also said it has blue runes, which I know "runes" can mean a ton of different things in a fantasy setting but I went literal with it and just grabbed the actual norse runes for the four elements off the interwebs, since I'm not great at designing writing systems. xD; Full size version here because huge

Oh man look at these two schmucks, they think they're super heroes apparently. (Mild blood warning but it's like, cuts and bruises) Integrity characters lol. Stanley still thinks they're living in a video game and is celebrating a uhhhhh... another successful mission. Great job boys. Meanwhile Matthew just almost died three times, ran into a burning building, jumped out of a second-story window, bumped into his supervillain ex-boyfriend, and had to clock some guy over the head with a chair. Oh, yeah, did I mention that Stanley has superhuman damage resistance and Matthew doesn't?

Here's the main character of that loose fantasy WIP I've been working on. Tired sarcastic cleaning lady. Fed up with the "real" heroes and their incompetent nonsense so she's just gonna do this biz herself. Will see a mopey kid protagonist, say "Is anyone gonna adopt that?" and not wait for an answer.
