I thought I had settled on my NaNo idea, but naturally, a new idea emerged yesterday and is clawing at my brain. So who knows which will be victorious in the next 15 days! But here are the options thus far:
(1) Sparks and Faith, a revamping of my 2011 NaNo.
Ten years ago, mages of [Country Name Here] overthrew the mage-killing, anti-magic government and instituted a new era of freedom and liberty--for mages, of course. And if they may be a bit harsh on the members of the old religion that oppressed them, well, that's only to be expected.
Sparker's a fire mage, with fire mage parents, but her parents didn't support the rebellion. She's spent her whole life since then trying to prove her worth and move beyond her parents' cowardice. Her knack for blending fire magic and guns has caught the attention of those in power, and she's finally making a name for herself and moving into the circles she's always aspired to.
Ten years ago, when the mage revolution took power, one of their first actions was to wipe out Faith's hometown, a bastion of the old mage-killing ways. Only Faith survived. Now, Faith is working in the city, where her skills at dressmaking (entirely her own, not magical, never magical) have made her in demand with the nobility--including an old friend of hers, Thomas. Thomas lets her in on a secret: there's a rebellion brewing, intent on deposing these godless mages and restoring the proper order of things. Naturally, Faith joins.
In the original story, there were clear right and wrong sides, and Sparker and Faith were both on the same side. I realized that logically, they'd be diametrically opposed, and the whole thing spiraled from there.
(2) As-yet untitled brand-new idea
Magic has been gone for 600 years. Some thought it was gone for good; some thought it had all been a myth. But now, magic is trickling back into the world, and things are waking up.
One of these things is a wind-caller whose name I do not yet have. She wakes back up into a world with 600 years of cultural and technological advancement from the one she left behind, but all she wants is to find her bird-ship. What complications will ensue on the way? Beats me, I just thought of this yesterday.
So that's the ideas as they stand now!
