On a potentially related note: Wonder if that's referring to the cheating groups creating a bunch of shells to stockpile before the Cup starts? Or if it's just the usual autobuying/autofeeding that goes on. I'm on the ArC advertising the collab and my preview and I can say that the artists are NOT really pleased with the answer to that question (at least the ones I talk to on a regular basis). I guess it makes sense, buuut that can't be the real problem. It might contribute to the problem, but I don't know if it's the main issue. (Fun fact: I actually am friends with annnoel (not in IRL, though). She is super cool like her sister, Naru.)

This might be the first time this thread's ever been on the topic technically assigned to it.

<abbr> June Scarlet : </abbr>It's been a long, almost-100 page journey, but we did it guys. YAY US Rabbit ♠ : I mean we've known for a while now that JS's servers aren't the best. Also, I don't think we know how much of a background CQ has in CS, so maybe it's also a matter of her not knowing how to explain whatever is going on properly? The programmers simplify it to her when she asks and she gives us those watered-down versions. Either way, I dunno what we would do even if we had the full story so it's kind of a moot point.

So this was on the TNT message board.
My question is, what might a captcha implementation do?

So this was on the TNT message board. My question is, what might a captcha implementation do? You know I saw that, but I have no idea why a captcha could help. I also don't know what the 'abuse of ULs and Pet Lookups' is referring to. Would the captcha be on the actual lookups or would it be on the edit pages? Maybe it has something to do with the suspected bots that were emptying out galleries en masse last year? No one on any boards I've lurked seem to know what the point of them is, either.

It means that, for some time now, people have been botting those areas of the site - in large amounts. Likely to gather a database of desirable pets and inactive accounts. JS have been having this problem for much of the year - it's why they made lookups and then pet lookups hidden behind login pages. This isn't to do with breaking into account per se, just the initial efforts to find out which accounts are vulnerable. It's debatable if a captcha will work, given that hiding things behind a login has apparently not.

It's debatable if a captcha will work, given that hiding things behind a login has apparently not. I don't really understand how bots work, but couldn't they (the cheaters) just have an account logged in while the bot runs to bypass the login screen thing? I know that some bots are smart enough to 'solve' captchas (heck, anyone with adblock can see how easy it is to brute-force past a captcha if they wanted to) so this seems like yet another security feature that won't hurt the cheaters but will inconvenience innocent users.

There are /some/ captchas which bots struggle with. We'll see which ones JS end up using, but you're entirely right that this will most likely just end up inconveniencing people who play normally. The solution that will work is for JS to get better servers, but we know they can't afford that. At least they are throwing things at the problem, I guess?

If they know bots are the problem, hopefully they do their research and pick one of the ones that can beat a bot.

Interesting to know it was a bot that got into my account, so it seems there wasn't much I could do other than recover it as fast as I did to minimize the damage. I was online when I got hacked and used the PW recovery feature to get the account back and the PIN notification to retrieve the changed PIN and change it. I was wondering if whoever hacked me would make another run at it, but a bot would just keep moving on.
The only thing that happened (besides PW and PIN) was the removal of my Dr_Death plushies from my gallery (I put them back) and my UL was cleared, where I won't bother to redo it.

I think the only captchas that would work is one that asks a word question (like it shows a picture and asks a simple question about it like the color of something or a number in it) or one that involves you doing a physical action (like moving a slider or clicking buttons, probably along with a simple instruction). And if there's a set amount of captchas they'd need to update it every so often as, though it'll be difficult to make a bot to solve the problems, they probably can eventually but only for the captchas that exist.

Site down for anyone else, or is it just me? It's struggling for me, too; hopefully it doesn't last too long.

Meanwhile, it looks like those aforementioned captchas have been instated, you have to prove yourself human before seeing any petlook or userlookup. Even your own.
This had better work, and solve lag problems, because I'm still struggling to wrap my mind around how this helps.

Site down for anyone else, or is it just me? Was forever loading for me until it just gave up and quit. (Taking too long to respond.) Same result after a few refreshes. So yeah, it's definitely down.
