Komori We need you now to play devil's advocate and argue that Neopets is going to stay alive and well. :3 Devils aren't known for bringing hope, unfortunately. Viacom selling off Neopets never DID give me good vibes, honestly. The only reason a for-profit monolith dumps something is because it's not making profit, and that's exactly what's needed to keep the lights on and the staff paid. @huntress, maybe big non-game companies make plans for years in advance, but game companies are notorious for "I came to work one day and my key didn't work" layoffs out of the blue. Kotaku's run an entire article series on that topic. I'm still in a little shock at the news, honestly. Working for Neopets was something I'd wanted to do (and applied to do!) for years. Like, literally, years. Got interviews a couple of times and really close once. Heck, I was one of the lucky few who got to tour Neo HQ (before their move to Jumpstart AND before their move to the mural-painted HQ) thanks to my sister winning that Design a TCG card contest back in '04. Even after getting a different job in the industry, I always entertained the "maybe I'll apply to Neopets again" idea. I'm sure Jumpstart is going to keep the Neopets IP in some capacity, but whether or not it includes the pet site (or our pets!), I can't even begin to imagine. I'm actually going to spend today taking screenshots and saving art...

Oooof, really? D= Just monitors, support and programers? That's insane. I assumed they just laid off extraneous people for the sake of downsizing. How can they even continue to run the site with such a measly team? Did they seriously not keep any artists or content developers?
This looks insanely bleak.

Caylista and I started talking about a group effort of screen shotting parts of Neopets, seeing as there a dozen plots (the comics would need a screenshot per panel), over 650 issues of the NT, and contests and pet pages and anything else. Stories in the NT may not need screenshots as they are text, but with that and the previously referred to contests, there may or may not be issues of it being someone else's work. If the site is going down, I don't know how big an issue it would be, so I'm just putting that out there. As far as what to do with the screenshots, we could share them here or on another blogging site for any old Neo user to see. I'm also wondering about having them be able to put up new Neo work as well, seeing as some people have works in progress or continued series. It may be a hassle, as there might need to be some regulations on what is posted (depending on how many people would use that site), or it may work similarly to this forum. Or we could just put our work here, I'm not sure. Either way, I know I'm covering my favorite comics and plots, and hopefully all the lore and effort of Neo won't be completely lost. If anyone has input or interest, I'm open to suggestions. EDIT: Also, this is a much more personal question, but there's been a Neopet I've been meaning to create later on down the road. Seeing as that road *may* be cut short, should I create him now? I'd love to at least have him exist for a while rather than just keep him in my head, but I don't want to make him now if I don't have to. I know nothing has technically been confirmed yet, and I highly doubt Neopets would shut down without some notice, but... just in case, would it be smart or rash?

^ There is a freeware program called HTTrack that can copy and download entire sites--you just fiddle with the settings and then watch it go. I use it to back up my blogs and stuff, but it seems like it could work for something like preserving the NT. The problem is (1) hard drive space, and (2) it's not very user-friendly and I don't understand all the buttons. >_>
All of this is of course assuming the site is going to tank like tomorrow, which, y'know...

Funny thing, a while back I was thinking that one day I should get all my NT comics and stories printed and bound for easy shelf access (I'm too old to fully trust digital methods of data saving xD) but I've no interest in retiring from the NT-business anytime soon (got lengthy hiatuses, yes, but that's cos school and work get in the way) so there's no clear endpoint where I can call it all quits and take the finished bundle to a print shop. If the entire site goes belly-up, that's a finished product right there.

Welp, nothing to do other than wait and see and hope.

Man. I wasn't wanting to post anything, because I was really hoping this was more rumor than anything, and was hoping for clarification on Monday, but... man. I was never a huge Neopets addict or anything, but... I've been on the site for 14 years. But I mostly feel bad for everyone who was laid off. I suppose best case is that Jump Start wants to start over with their own people, but that's kind of mean, and I really don't like that kind of business practice. Not sure what to think at this point.

I downloaded the images of my pets, just incase.
I'd reccommend if anyone has anything worth saving on neo, SCReENSHOT IT NOW.
Also, I hope Jellyneo saves all the item images and such.

If neopets DOES end up biting the dust, I hope we can still keep the forum together. After all we don't just discuss neopets related stuff here, and I've made a lot of friends through the NTWF.

I don't think the community here will dissolve because Neopets is going down. I believe the Forum is by now an independent enough entity that we can keep going without Neopets. The problem will be attracting new members and advertising.

Shinko I have faith that we'll still be able to stick together. We have our own events as well that bring us together, and we have a lot more in common than just playing Neopets EDIT: Alsoooo, here he is! <3 <3 <3 Jonathon Apple Blossom, otherwise called Apple or Little One. Set after any comic stuff, Twillie adopts a baby Kougra in need and names him after a good family friend :3 so technically he's not really existent in the timeline right now, but ah welleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I agree; I really hope the forum stays online long after Neopets is gone. I can survive without Neopets but it'd be really difficult to lose the NTWF and all the friends I have here. This is just so shocking.

Heh, I was thinking the same thing, only posting it as an offsite webcomic rather than binding it. I went back and saved the gif/jpegs of some of my old comics just in case, since I can't seem to find anything from issues 1-60 anywhere (I'm sure I just stuck them on a harddrive somewhere...). But even if Neopets disappeared entirely, I'd probably still plug away at Spooky. Been doing it for nigh 12 years; no point stopping now. XD

XD Along these same lines, how fun/cool would it be to make an actual newspaper out of the big collab issues? Don't know that it was be practical price wise, but... it could be pretty cool if we could pull it off. I'm still in contact with my publications advisor from high school. Just don't have anything like Publisher on the computer (nor would I dare even TRY to put that on this old laptop), or I'd even volunteer to attempt to design it. Anyway, if anyone else would be interested in this, I can do some research and offer advice, if nothing else. Or, you know. This could just be some crazy harebrained idea of mine that won't work out.
