Herein, witness all the rules of this fine game! \o/ Please read them prior to game-start so that you're fully acquainted with game mechanics. Nothing is too complicated, but if you've any questions, do not hesitate to ask me via PM.
Game Phases
The game is separated into two phases: night and day. The following explanations apply only to the living; for information on what you do once you're dead, see The Dead.
Day begins with the results of the death(s) that happened the previous night-- whether those be caused by the mafia, werewolf, vigilante, warden, etc. During the day, all living members of the town will be able to chat in that day's handy-dandy chat thread. These threads are sort of "anything goes"... you can obviously talk about game events, and strategy, and "who should we execute", but if you just want to chatter randomly, that's also fine. You may chat as either yourself, your NTWF persona, or an original character, so long as you stick to the same portrayal for the duration of the game (that is to say, if you start out chatting as yourself, you can't swap into being your original character three rounds in). Each day will last approximately three real life days, capped by an execution, if enough votes are made against any one person. At the end of each day, the execution will take place (if the execution threshold has been met; see Executions), that day's chat thread will be locked, and the game will segue into night.
Night is the shorter of the two phases, lasting approximately 36-48 real hours, depending on how much is going on. During the night, please submit to me via your Role PM your action for that night, if you’re a role that has a night action—which most do; however, unlike in our traditional Mafia, it is NOT mandatory that you act every night. In fact, it may be strategically sound for some roles not to act on some nights, particularly in the beginning (Vigilante probably shouldn't be shooting people without any idea who's guilty; it might not be smart for the Magician to transport people blindly, etc.).
You’re also welcome to submit your night action to me in advance (e.g., during the day), but with the caveat that it won’t go through if you’re executed, and if your target is executed, you’ll need to supply an alternate move. In the night, there will be no chatting in the board as the town “sleeps”. But there will definitely be behind-the-scenes discussion taking place… whether that be it the mafia deciding on their target; or the Warden interrogating his prisoner whilst deciding whether or not to execute him; or the Clairvoyant speaking to the Dead.
The Dead
Oh my, you seem to be dead! How unfortunate. While your role has ceased with your death, and you cannot talk strategy or anything else you learned via your role to the living (either publicly or privately-- this is very important for game integrity!), that doesn't mean you're out of it completely.
The dead will have their own chat threads and board, hidden and password protected, and to which the link/password will be granted upon rigor mortis. During the day, they can chatter there about HOW THE TOWN IS SO BLOWING THIS or just... whatever they want, pretty much. The more interesting part comes at night, when the Clairvoyant will be granted access to the board and allowed to communicate with the dead. What does this mean? Well, if you gathered any juicy information in your life that you either didn't get a chance to share, or were too nervous to share because mafia target, yo, you can tell the friendly Clairvoyant, and hopefully they'll be able to put it to good use. All in all, while the dead cannot directly communicate with the living beyond their nightly rendezvous with the Clairvoyant, they can still be immensely useful to the game result, by strategizing, bandying theories, etc., and then sharing it with the Clairvoyant. Furthermore, since dead mafiosos will also have access to the Dead board, the Dead have the only "official" access to confirmed mafiosos... who of course won't want to give up their living buddies, but well, who ever said you can't play mind games post-mortem?
Dead mafiosos will not be removed from the Mafia PM, but may NOT speak in it any longer. If you're dead, you will be given the Daily password to the Dead Board, but you may NOT share it with the living under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Executions
Unlike in our traditional Mafia, it is not mandatory to execute each night. Furthermore, execution votes are going to be public and lodged via poll that will automatically close at Day's end each round. To prevent the Mafia from being able to single-handedly lynch people, at least seven votes must be lodged against any one person at game-start in order for them to be executed-- but diminishing as the living player pool shrinks (if there are only five people alive, obviously we can't have seven votes needed to execute). If the minimum threshold is not met by Day's end, there will be no execution.
However, this does not mean you can Never Execute Anybody. An execution must take place by Day Three at latest, or someone will be randomly executed by the whims of Ranumgen. Thereafter, there must be an execution at least every other round in order to avoid Ranumgen's terrifying decision-making skills.
If there a tie, death will also be decided by Ranumgen. So, avoid ties.
As long as it proves feasible, I'm going to endeavor to publish the next Day who voted for whom. This can be useful in analyzing likely allegiances (for example, Mafia members will seldom vote for other members of the mafia). Since polls only say who voted, and not which option they selected, to accomplish this I'll need to go by the honour system: please PM me with who, if anybody, you voted for when you submit that night's move (or, if you're not a role that acts in the night, during the night separately).
Jail
While alive, the Warden will be able to jail one person each night (selected during the day). If you're in jail, you'll be informed at Night's start. You will NOT be able to perform your role action; if you are mafia, you may NOT "talk" in the Mafia PM that night (they'll be informed you're in jail). While in jail, you will have a chance to communicate with the Warden during a process that'll be outlined to you in the Jailed PM. A person who is in jail cannot be attacked that night and thus has temporary night immunity.
Night Immunity
Some roles in the game are either permanently night immune, or may be immune at certain points. The godfather and arsonist are night immune, as is the retributionist. The werewolf is night immune on days that he's transformed. Other roles can become temporarily immune if protected by the bodyguard or healer, or if given a vest by the blacksmith; the survivalist is immune on days he uses his vest. A person who is in jail cannot be attacked that night and has temporary night immunity. The werewolf's rampage IGNORES night immunity. The arsonist may not douse non-vest wearing night immunes, including the godfather, but if a member of the mafia becomes the godfather after being doused, he will retain his doused state and may still be ignited. Wearing a vest does not protect against the arsonist's douse (how is a bulletproof vest going to stop you from being covered in gasoline?).
Strategy/Alliances/Et al
The fun part of the Liar's Game is that, because roles and information are permitted to be revealed throughout the game at times that people deem strategic, this will lead to alliances, mind-games, etc. It's pretty much "anything goes" as to how you might want to go about this... you can always post things in the Day's chat thread itself if you want something completely public, but obviously there will be times when you just want to collaborate with a few others you might trust, which requires private communication. In these instances, you may contact other players via PM, of course, or Skype, or any other medium by which you generally talk to them. Since there will probably be a helluva lot of scheming behind-the-scenes, I'm not going to require transcripts or anything of all conversations. XD; You're more than welcome to add me to any conversations, or let me know your FUN PLOTS, because I enjoy watching shenanigans, but it isn't required.
Always keep in mind that while you may be communicating privately at different times during the game, that doesn't mean it will STAY private. While in everyday conversation and interaction, what you say in PM ought to stay in PM unless you've given permission for it to be shared, that is NOT the case in this game. Other players are more than welcome to share what you've said with others if they think it necessary or helpful... so always be careful what you say. Especially if you're lying!
The only real "rules" for strategizing are:
1. It stops toward the living once you're dead. Once you are dead, you may only talk "game stuff" to other dead people, and the Clairvoyant at night.
2. You stay respectful of others. This game will (as the name suggests) most definitely involve lying, plotting, and scheming galore. It may involve sharing information you learned that the person gave you in "confidence". That is all fine. Being rude or malicious beyond the scope of the game, however, is NOT fine. If you feel as if anybody's overstepped bounds at ANY time, let me know ASAP.
3. No game throwing. I really hope we're all better than this, but I just want to say it here to be clear: even once you're dead, stay loyal to your alignment, please. If you were mafia, no rage quitting and telling the Dead the rest of the mafia point blank so that the Clairvoyant will get them executed. XD; If you were town, please don't intentionally mislead the Clairvoyant. Just, basic common sense, dudes.
4. On a similar note, part of the fun of this is the uncertainty-- the mind games, basically. I really hope people aren't going to try and "game" this system by not-particularly-kosher methods that go beyond simply talking, because that's not cool, and makes the overall game highly weighted and unfair. Please don't do it, or look for loopholes. And if someone contacts you with something you're not sure about ("Just show me the screenshot of your role PM!" "Here, I'll copy/paste my role PM to you"), let me know immediately, please. We had some issues with game integrity in Medieval that still bother me (even if they, fortunately, did not impact end results). I'd be extremely discouraged if I had to deal with people trying to game the system again. And if you're unsure of whether a communication method/tactic is allowed or not, just ask me, and I'll be glad to tell you!
5. Have fun.
We're all new at this. Some things will probably go wrong, some will go right, and some will just go "wut". Not every person is going to be the best strategist, or make the best decisions at all times. And that is fine. We'll still love ya at the end, anyway, as long as you're a good sport! \o/
