Well, you see my problem:  Because it's all well and good for me to think that the readers can tell what Shad is trying to say, but I know what he's trying to say. Can you tell what his line is (without poring over it too hard)? |

Sounds like he's trying to say "Are you sure that this is a food item?", in any case. If in doubt, subtitles are possible, or you can draw the letters individually and have a bit of creative license (for example, when he's crunching down the curved letters look like bite marks or are drawn very wobbly, or something like that).

I didn't understand what he was saying before I read Coaster's translation as I was confusing myself in thinking he was saying a specific food item's name.
When I read it at first, it sounded like "A ow shoo at is is a food item?"
It might just be me, but I'd put maybe a couple consonants in the first few words for easier articulation.

I could read it fairly easy... "Are you sure that it is a food item?" The only thing that gave me pause was the the double "is" because I thought it was "Are you sure it is a food item?" at first. |

I got it on my first read, including the double "is", and I usually can't understand anything when people transcribe full-mouthed nom-language.
(Seeing his open mouth helped me add the huffing and slurring sounds inside my head as I was reading. x3)

I got it without too much trouble. It might be unreadable for anyone who isn't a fluent English speaker, though.

So it looks to be about an equal shot between those who could read it fine and those who had to poke at it a little? Yeah, I'll see if I can stick a few more consonants in there somewhere and see where it goes. It can't be an accurate representation of phonetics anyway, because the best you'll realistically get out with your mouth wide open is "aeououeaeeoie".
