Fancying himself a modern-day Robin Hood, a young water mage named Jota makes his living by robbing the King's castle, poorly protected as the forces of the City of Legunis expend their efforts on a war against the Gods. During a particularly successful heist, Jota is caught by the guards and conscripted into war - forced to shorten his lifespan fighting an un-winnable battle.
That is until be meets Hyuk, an air mage who uses his rare magical abilities to wield electricity. After the two of them escape into the wilderness of Lagunia, they discover the toll that the war is having on the world. But in their bid to evade the warfare, they end up right at its centre.

After almost not doing it this year, I finally have some semblance of a plotline! 8D I've been so back-and-forth about NaNo this year because I just couldn't decide if I had the motivation, and then I couldn't pick a story to do and it was just all a mess. But i'm doing it. Because I know that i'll regret it if I don't at least try! Now that I have a basic story to go with, i'm slowly starting to get that excited feeling again! =D
Originally, I was going to continue last year's NaNo. I only wrote 11k last year, and barely scratched the surface of the story that I wanted to tell. So that's what I was going to go with. But then I changed my mind. I don't know why, but that just didn't feel right. So instead and as a kind of compromise, i've decided to tell something very similar. I'll be starting from the beginning with completely new protagonists and all that, but the story that I never got to tell last year i'll write in this. Last year, my two protagonists were mages-in-hiding and they were found out and began their escape. Then I stopped. That was all I got to. So this time, I have Jota and Hyuk, who aren't brothers and are captured and transported to the war but escape before they get there. I can still include all the post-escape planning that i'd done last year, just with different characters doing it. Which works for me. Because after looking at my notes from last year, I REALLY want to tell that story still! XD
But enough about last year! I'm once again using my Lagunia world setting. I made it for my 2011 NaNo, and i'm so bad at world-building that i've just kind of stuck to it! XD Plus, I like that whole idea of telling stories in the same place but from different perspectives. Here's the world i'm using:
My 2011 NaNo, Dusk Shine kind of told the big picture: restoring dusk to beat the Gods. But for last year's and this one, I like going into a much smaller frame. It's not finishing this war, it's how this war affects everyone else. Same setting, same time and all that, but it's a whole different situation. So that's what I like to go with.
Onto my characters: Jota likes to think/pretend that he's a hero, acting all noble and whatnot, but he's really in it for himself. He doesn't really hide his magical abilities to avoid conscription, but he also doesn't flaunt it either. He just goes about his daily life as he normally would. He's older than Hyuk, and likes to believe that he's wise and learned, but it's not quite the case. He holds childish dreams and hopes, and is pretty naive about the world in general.
He meets Hyuk under rather difficult circumstances, but after the two of them escape they begin to bond. Hyuk starts off very quiet and a little dazed, but opens up pretty quickly. He has a strong sense of protection of both himself and others, so will always opt to stand his ground rather than run away or give up. It can make him seem a little stoic and grumpy at times. Air mages all possess the innate ability to wield electricity and lightning, but it's very hard to learn. Hyuk somehow did it, although he doesn't remember how.
They're my two protagonists! 8D
I'm just glad that I have some kind of plot for November now! XDDD And since i'm using a lot of my plans from last year, it takes off some of the workload going in. It's a win-win! 8D

Many were the days in which cities prospered under the ruling of Gods, made sentient from the natural elements. Kingdoms were built and rulers appointed, each one praying for their benevolent leaders to grant them a peaceful reign. As such, the weather, the ground and the the seas remained in their favour. That was until, spreading a contagion over the leading empire as a distraction, the God of darkness destroyed the dusk. For the Gods of Lagunia, dusk was a transitional time during which their raw, destructive energy was reduced; a daily temporal process that restricted them of their full potential. Without it, and with power unrestrained, Lagunia was at their mercy.
Years had passed since the destruction of dusk and the banishment of the God of darkness to faraway lands unknown. Without the darkness to blind their jealousy and rage, the Gods had laid waste to the Kingdoms around them. Only one City remains, fighting a bitter War against foes they couldn’t hope to possibly overcome.
