So I'm going non-traditional this year, largely because I'm in grad school and the idea of writing 50,000 words is like HAHAH NOPE. But I'm hoping to get a good chunk written anyway! Some of you may be familiar with these characters, I've had them hanging around the Taco before and rambled at people about them in chats. I've basically had the story idea hanging around for three-ish years and it's long past time that I started writing.
The story centers around Ellot Thain, an enthusiastic and ambitious grad student studying for his doctorate in Magical Theory. Unlike most mages, who tend to be traditionalists who eschew modern technology, Ellot is very interested in ways that magic and technology could be combined, so to help him with his research he buys an android that he names Rune.
One of the most basic tenets of magical theory states that magical ability stems from the soul. So Ellot is understandably shocked when one day he walks in on Rune practicing basic magic out of one of Ellot's books. Thrilled by the possibilities, he immediately decides to change the direction of his research and begins investigating Rune's abilities. But Ellot's not the only one interested in an android who can do magic, and not all the interest is friendly. This dissertation is going to be a little more complicated than he expected.
THE CHARACTERS:
Ellot Thain, clever but maybe not as clever as he thinks he is.
Rune, who may or may not have a soul.
Eden, a sharp-tongued mechanic who sees Rune as a person.
Edual Koref, the renowned archmage, brilliant but irascible, who decides to take on Ellot - and Rune - as his students.
Eva Sinclair, CEO of Sinclair Industries and one of the leading minds in AI technology.
SYNAPSE, which isn't supposed to exist.
