“Papa, Papa, are we getting another brother?!” Lucy squealed, jumping up and down with glee. Tyto's head shot around the corner, his eyes wide with fear and anger. “What?!” He cried, “Papa you can't, I don't want another brother or sister, three's too many already!” Before I knew it, there was a swarm of kids crowding the doorway, all shouting over each other with varying degrees of glee, panic, and anger. I rose from my chair and planted my imposing frame above them all, and my stare was enough to silence them. “Alright now everyone, go back into the nursery, Heather and I have to talk about grown-up things for a while, go on,” I coaxed, ushering them all back into the next room. Danby broke away from the throng and stood staring at the floor for several minutes, then looked at me silently. It was a haunted stare, one I'd seen a few times before, once when I'd rescued him from the pound after he'd got himself trapped while looking for his mother, and again when he thought I was abandoning him by sending him to nursery school. Even after two years, he still hadn't gotten over his debilitating separation anxiety, and I could tell just by looking now, that he didn't want another sibling, didn't want someone to come and usurp his spot in the family. I sighed and picked him up, and he nuzzled his head under my chin. “Don't worry,” I murmured, “Everything'll be alright.” With that, I returned him to his friends and went back into the kitchen to find Heather. She was leaning with her elbows on the table, her chin propped up by her hands as she gazed sadly at the photos of the innocent faces staring up at her. I sighed heavily and sat down, sliding the pictures across the table to get a better look. There was no denying they were adorable, but how could I manage with two more? Four was proving hard enough, and some days I wondered how I'd manage. I pressed my fingers to the bridge of my nose and closed my eyes, sighing again. “I just don't know Heather,” I murmured, “I mean, they're very sweet, and I'd love to take them, but I just don't... don't think I'm in a position to right now. I have a hard enough time taking care of my four, and funds are pretty tight right now, I'm barely making enough to make ends meet. Then there's the kids, Lucy's obviously excited about it, but how can I do that to Tyto and Danby? They're so scared....” I trailed off as I realised I was rambling. I chanced a glance at Heather, who was looking forlornly at the photographs again. She sighed and looked at me, her gaze piercing me, “I understand Adrian, it is a lot of work, but I wouldn't ask if I weren't desperate. What am I going to do?” She stared sadly at the woodgrain on the table, fingering the baby Aisha's picture absently. Suddenly I lit up, remembering something. “I have an idea,” I said excitedly, sitting down again, “I have a cousin in Neopia Central who has two older pets. Her name's Emily, and she's been looking to adopt for a while now. I'm sure these two would get along great with Luckki and Talshaia, they're great kids, they get along wonderfully with their cousins. I could take you to meet her if you like.” Heather looked up at me again, relief flashing in her eyes. “Really?” She asked, “You think she'd want them?” I nodded eagerly, “Yes, and I know she'd take really good care of them. She doesn't live far from here, so we'd both be able to visit them every day.” Heather smiled, excitement washing over her face, “Oh Adrian that's wonderful, why don't you neomail her and see if she's home, if she is, we can round up the kids and go for a visit.” I smiled as I headed for my stationary drawer, “A very good idea,” I replied.

I rummaged through the draw until I had located the yellow-blue lined stationary and sat back down at the kitchen table and began to write. I wrote my cousin a quick letter explaining the situation and if she would mind taking them in. I put my pen back down , sealed the note in a yellow envelope, and put it in the mailbox for the post master who would be here in10 minutes. I smiled back at Heather over the kitchen table. It didn’t take us long to get a response.
Emily wrote back that she would love to take the little ones in, and she thought they would make fantastic cousins for her pets and great siblings for my little ones. I frowned a bit at this part. Did I really want to be considered the father of these two kids, even if they were living with my cousin and I would only be partially responsible for them? Was I ready? I didn’t have much time to to think about these questions as Heather called everyone in and we got all the little kids rounded up and ready. All except for four.
Lunixxa was the first to notice that some of the kids were missing. “Hey, where is Indigo, Dee-Dee, Tyto, and Vanessa? Did anyone see them anywhere?” Heather and I gave each other a brief worried glance before we headed off to the nursery. We left the two twins in charge of all lttle ones, knowing they could handle the responsible. We both stopped in the nursery as we spotted the four missing kids, Indigo and Dee-Dee on one side of the room, Tyto and Vanessa on the other. It looked like Dee-Dee and Vanessa were trying to cheer up the two Baby pets, each with tears in their eyes and trembling bottom lips. We both gave each other a look and sighed as we each went to opposite sides of the room to see what was wrong.
I knelt down by Tyto and Vanessa, who appeared to be over their shyness and were now close friends. I wiped tears streaming from his large green orbed eyes and pulled him onto my lap, rocking him gently on my lap until hiss loud snuffles were quiet little sniffles. Vanessa put a paw on his shoulder and gazed worriedly and concernedly at Tyto. I gave the sweet and caring UC Baby Kougra a reassuring pat on the head as Tyto pulled his face from my shirt, still snuffling slightly. I stroked his head and wiped the tears from his eyes. It appeared Heather was doing the same with Indigo with Dee-Dee placing her hoofs on Heather’s knee, and gazing at her cousin concernedly. “Hush now, little one ,it is alright. What is wrong ? You can tell me . It will all be fine.” I kissed him lightly on the head as Tyto let off one more snuffle and began to talk in a wobbly, waverly voice. “I-I-I don’t want anymore siblins’ . Indigo says they hog all the attention and your Mommy or Daddy won’t pay any attention to you or love you cuz they’re to busy with the screaming, cryin’ babies. I-I-I-I d-d-don’t want that to happen. I love you Papa! Please don’t get us anymore siblin’s!” He buried hi face in my shirt again and let out more sobs.”
“Well it’s true!” Indigo cried, tears streaming from her aqua blue eyes and her bottom lip trembling. It’s-it’s-it’s-it’s just not fair! I already gots lots of siblin’s who hog all the attention and cry all the time I wish I didn’t have any young brothers or sisters! I wanna be4 the baby of the family again so Mommy will love me!” she let out a heart wrenching sob that tore at my heart and Heather’s. It made Tyto stop crying for a minute as he stared at Indigo pityingly.
Heather squeezed her little Baby Cybunny tighter and rocked her gently, stroking the tuff of hair on her head. “Hush, little one, it’s alright. Is that what you really think? Well none of it is true. I love you just as equally as I love all your siblings. Even if I had 30 or 40 pets, I would still love you the same amount I do ever yday. You’re my special little girl, Indie, you always have been.”
“You-you really mean it? Indigo asked, disbelief and mistrust still in her eyes. She snuffled as her mother hugged her tighter.
“Of course I mean it. I love you, Indigo. How would you like to see your little sister later? She is at my friend’s house, Sarah. I think she would be glad to see her new big sister. What do you think? Would you like to?” Indigo nodded happily as her mother engulfed her in a hug. I smiled as I blinked back tears from my eyes. That was a really touching scene they had. I felt the same way about my own little ones. I reassured Tyto everything would be alright and I would always love him. He smiled happily as he leaned his head into my shirt and sucked his thumb. My mind was made up. I could be the father of two more pets, even if they lived with my cousin. I would try to visit them every day and help Emily take care of them. If Heather could do it, so could I. Everything would work out and be alright.
~******~ And it was alright. We rounded up all the kids together, and headed off to my cousin Emily’s. Heather had already set up the transfer system for the two Baby pets, so they were there already. Lucy ran up excitedly to her two new siblings, but Tyto, Danby, and Shasta were hesitant and shy at first, but smiled and greeted their new, 2 year old brother warmly when he smiled back at them shyly and said “Hello”. They smiled at their 8 month old sister as she gurgled and waved from the blue blanket she was wrapped in, placed in my arms by Emily. My heart melted at their sweet faces and when they said the words “Papa” and “Da-Da”. I was proud to be their Papa. Heather went over to her friend Sarah’s house quickly and returned with a light, aqua blue bundle. She gathered Indigo, her siblings, and cousins to see the new addition to the family. The little 5 month old Aisha poked her head out of the bundle and said “Mew”, Mew”. Everyone around her smiled and laughed, even Indigo, who was heistant and wary at first, but slowly seemed to warm up to her new sister, who laughed and giggled as Indigo peeked at her shyly. She smiled. Her little sister wasn’t to bad after all. Heather and I smiled at each other happily as we gazed at all the kinds, old and young. We sighed contentdly. It was the ending to a perfect morning and perfect day.

Waaaaaaaaahh!" "Shasta how many times have I told you not to hit your brother?!" "Papa make 'im quit it!" "Danby leave your sister's Usukis alone!" "She started it!" "Did not!" "Did too!" "Did n– " "Enough!" I shouted, and everybody froze. I surveyed the wreckage around me and sighed, running a tired hand through my hair; the nursery room looked worse than Faerieland after the Faerie's Ruin plot. Shasta, my baby Ogrin, squirmed in my arms to break free. I put him down, and Tyto, my baby Grarrl, backed up, sticking his thumb in his mouth as he eyed up his brother warily. "You leave me alone Shasta," he said nervously, "I don't wanna play your silly ol' Battledome games no more, they hurt." Shasta rolled his eyes, "Aw don't be such a baby, it's fun!" He dropped his head between his forepaws and grinned like he was going to pounce. Tyto yelped and scuttled for safety behind the sofa. "Papa look what Danby did to my Usukis!" Came a furious cry from across the room. I turned toward the source of the noise and found Lucy, my baby Kacheek, indignantly holding a Beautiful Bride Usuki in one paw, and a Tyrannian Usuki in the other. They had been dressed in each other's clothes, and I shot a stern glance at my baby Shoyru, while trying to hide a smile at how ridiculous Lucy's toys looked. "Danby," I said firmly, "I've told you not to bother your sister like that. Help her redress her dolls, then you and Shasta go outside to play, I'm tired of playing Battledome referee every time you four get into an argument." I was about to head upstairs when I heard the doorbell ring. I sighed, whoever it was had picked a bad time to drop by. As I approached the door however, I thought I saw a familiar shape behind the frosted glass -blocked- It was surrounded by several small blurry forms that were less than knee-high. I opened the door, and a familiar sight greeted me. "Heather!" I said, smiling, "What in Neopia are you doing here? I haven't seen you in ages! Come in!" I ushered her and the handful of young pets she'd brought along inside, and led them all to the nursery. "Guys, look who I found!" I said to my kids. Shasta looked up from the pillow he was stalking, and his eyes lit up when he saw Chirban, a 2 year old Zafara, and one of his best friends. He beamed as he raced up and bowled Chirban over, planting his forepaws on his chest and grinning. "Where you been? I haven't seen you around here in ages! C'mon, I been workin' on my Battledome moves, wanna see?" And without waiting for a response, he galloped off again. Chirban smiled and followed after him. I felt a presence around my ankle and looked down. Tyto was clutching my trouser leg and staring at Heather nervously. "Papa," he whispered, "W-who's that?" I looked at where he was pointing, and saw a pair of large sandy coloured ears starting to emerge from behind Heather's left shoulder. The ears were followed by a pair of bright brown eyes that studied Tyto and I nervously, and a soft pink nose soon followed. Heather reached behind her and adjusted her tiny clingon so that the baby Kougra's forepaws were wrapped around her neck, and her tiny chin rested on her shoulder. "This is Vanessa," Heather said, smiling at the little face that blinked at me anxiously, "Vanessa, that's Tyto, can you sa 'hi'?" Venessa and Tyto stared at each other for a long time, nervously watching in case one or the other of them decided to attack. Finally, Vanessa detached a paw from its stronghold around her mother's neck and waved slightly. "Hi," she murmured almost inaudibly. Tyto quickly dropped his gaze to the floor and wrapped his other arm around my leg. "Hi," he said, equally quietly. Heather hoisted Vanessa off her back and put her gently on the floor, then nudged her forward, "Why don't you go play with Tyto? He's very friendly," she coaxed. Vanessa sat back on her haunches and tucked her tail protectively around her forepaws, "B-but he's a Grarrl," she whispered, "He could eat me." I chuckled, and Tyto jumped. I knelt down and detached him from my leg and guided him forward, "Tyto's she’s not dangerous,s he's just as afraid of you as you are of him, but I bet you two would get along great together, just give it a try. Your mom and I will be in the kitchen if you need us," I said, standing up slowly. Before I'd taken two steps, Tyto had rushed forward and reattached himself to my ankle. "Papa don't leave me!" He wailed. I sighed, but picked him up and deposited him gently on the sofa. Reaching into the bookcase, I handed him one of his favourite books and said, "Don't worry Tyto, the other kids won't hurt you, and I'll be right next door. Why don't you read for a while, and when you're ready, I'm sure Vanessa would love to play with you." I glanced hopefully in the direction of the little Kougra, who was now hiding behind the sofa with her enormous paws over her equally enormous eyes, trying to avoid getting trampled as Shasta and Chirban rushed past, chasing each other through the nursery. I smiled and shook my head exasperatedly. Stepping over her, I beckoned Heather into the kitchen and put some Borovan on the boil. "So," I said as I offered her a seat, "Tell me what you've been up to
“Well, I really don’t where to start. A lot has kind of happened since I last saw you. I got some more pets. No surprise there.” she replied with a grin as she took a seat across from me at the kitchen table. We could hear the sounds and crashes followed by laughter from the nursery. We both smiled at each other knowily. Most of our pets were getting along and having a fun time.” I took the bright, yellow kettle off the stove and poured us each a cup of Borovan. She wrinkled her nose slightly at the smell, but took a polite sip. I laughed as I sat down. I forgot she didn’t like Boravan. “Still don’t like Borovan, I see.” I replied as she set her cup down and smiled. She was about to respond when a Blue and Green Lutari stepped into the room, each holding a laughing, squirming, Baby pet. They were followed by Indigo and Lucy, and a 2 year old Baby Uni named Denrea, but called Dee-Dee by her family, each clutching Usuki’s and laughing. Dee-Dee, Chirban, the two Lutaris, and Myziko, the 1 year old Baby Ogrin, were all Indigo and her siblings cousins. Heather’s older sister created, adopted, and abandoned them, and Heather helped the two Lutari’s raise their younger siblings. It was something she sent to me in a neomail awhile back.
Lunnixxa, the Green Lutari, and the older, responsible twin, struggled to hold a squirming, laughing 5 month old Baby Kacheek named Darciie, Heather’s youngest. She gurgled and smiled happily at me as I smiled gently at her and waved to her. I remember when my kids were that young. But now they were three years old! I couldn’t believe it! I waved to the smiling and laughing 1 year old Baby Xweetok smiling and waving at me from Luniiixaaa’s, the Blue Lutari and younger and less mature twin’s arms. I was happy to see all the cute Baby pets, but the two twins looked stressed out. It was hard to watch all these baby pets and toddlers. Lunnixxa shifted Darciie in her arms as she gazed at us tiredly. The Blue Lutari tried to hold a squirming Fofinha in her arms as Indigo, Lucy, and Dee-Dee giggled. “We were wondering if you had any extra bottles. These two little ones are getting fussy.” She gestured to Darciie and Fofinha Indigo stuck out her tongue at her younger siblings and grinned proudly at her friend as she clutched her Usuki doll to her chest. “We don’t need no stupid bottles anymore like those babies. We’re big girls now.” The two Lutaris rolled their eyes as they took the bottles I handed to to them and ushered the little ones back into the room. We could still hear the excitdebable Baby Cybunny chattering with Lucy and Dee-Dee. “You guy’s are lucky you don’t have anymore younger siblin’s. They are sooooo annoyin’. They hog all the attention and cry all the time. Their annoyin’ babies.” “You were once a baby yourself.” reminded Luniiixaaa patiently, still holding Fofinha and the bottle. Lucy nodded her head in agreement and smiled. “I wish I had a little brother or sister. That would be really, really nice to have a sister. I have enough brother’s around here.” Their voices faded away as they headed back to the nursery. I laughed and shook my head. Those kids could be a little crazy and very amusing sometimes. Heather took a sip of her Boravan nervously ass she glanced at me anxiously. I gazed at her, worried and curious about what could be wrong. She bite her lip as she slowly pulled out two photos of her pet from her pocket and laid them down on the table. They were pictures of a Baby Aisha and 8 month old Blue Xweetok. I glanced at her curiously, wondering what it could be for.
“These are two pets I adopted from, the pound. I’d love to keep them, but I-I don’t have enough room. I am already bringing home my last pet, a 5 month old Baby Aisha named Annalyeia. I was wondering if maybe- if maybe, you could adopt them for me. It would really help me out, Adrian.” I didn’t have time to respond as the cry of three Baby pets interrupted me, “WHAT?! cried Indigo who looked furious and angry, and Lucy and Dee-Dee who were happy and excited. Heather and I looked at each other and let out simultaneously groans. This was going to pretty hectic. ~******~
I wrote my cousin a quick letter explaining the situation and if she would mind taking them in.

Crash! Thump! Bang! ! Crash! The little pink Baby Uni peeped cautiously from here place on the side table. She bit her lip as she saw the broken potted plant, the brown pot broken, brown soil and a yellow flower spilling out from it’s opening onto the floor. The little Baby Uni, Dee-Dee, glanced cautiualsly at her cousin Indigo and their friend, Lirri, a Baby Aisha. He gulped nervously as she heard the sound of the approaching footsteps. “Oh no! It felled on the floor. Lucas and Lily are gonna be sooo mad! We gotta clean it up before they get here! “ Before they could clean up or do anything, a 13 year old Shadow Ogrin named Lucas and a 12 year old Cloud Aisha named Lily appeared from the doorway and up to the Baby pets. Their eyes widen as they saw their mess. Dee-Dee gulped as Lucas crossed his arms and gave each of the Baby pets a stern look. “Guys, what are you doing?! You know Adrian is coming over and bringing your friends. She will be here any minute. You shouldn’t have knocked over that plant, we have to clean it up quick. You shouldn’t be on the table either. It isn’t safe, you could get really hurt. You have to be more careful.” Lily nodded as she got out a broom and pan from the closet. Lucas is right, you guys could get seriously hurt. You need to be more careful and sa-“ She was cut off by the sound of the doorbell as she was about to scold the three Baby pets. They both let out a groan as they rushed to open the door. It had been a stressful morning. They had to keep an eye on the three Baby pets who had been getting into some trouble this morning and and making sure the house was nice and clean for Gaz and the extra Baby pets she was bringing over for a playdate. It was going to be a long and stressful morning and afternoon. They would have to scold the three Baby pets later. They needed to answer the door for Adrian and his Baby pets.

Lucas approached the door and reached for the handle. Outside he could hear voices arguing with one another. “Shasta, I told you before to stop jumping on your brother, he doesn't want to play battledome with you and he doesn't like it.” “But how else am I s'posed to practise my moves? If I don't learn now, I'm gonna be the laughingstock of the battledome!” “Shas, you have plenty of time to learn to fight, you're still only two, don't worry about it.... And where on earth did you learn a word like 'laughingstock'?” “Luckki taught it to me.” A sigh, and then, “I think you're spending a little too much time playing with your older cousins.” Lucas opened the door, and the conversation ended. In front of him stood a tall man with rather dishevelled hair, at his feet stood four young pets, who looked eager to get inside. “Hi Lucas,” the man said, “I hope we're not too early.” Lucas smiled and shook his head, beckoning them all inside, “Nope, c'mon in Adrian, just go into the kitchen, Mom should be here soon. And sorry about the mess!” He called after him as Adrian disappeared into the next room. Adrian stepped into the kitchen, trying not to trip over his kids, who were all gambolling around his feet excitedly. Shasta, his little Ogrin, sat back on his haunches and raised his forepaws in the air, looking like a begging Puppyblew. “Papa guess what!” he said excitedly, “I just thought'a something! You can get me a punchbag Bob, that way I woul'n't hafta keep jumping on Tyto!” Adrian chuckled and picked up his son. Putting him in his lap he smiled and said, “Yes, or you could just behave, and stop jumping on your brother when I ask you to.” Shasta sighed and kneaded his forepaws into his father's leg impatiently, “Yeah but – ” He was interrupted by a cry. “Shasta! You're here!” Shasta peered over Adrian's shoulder and lit up when he saw his friend Chirban, the little Zafara. He scrambled off his father's knee and galloped into the living room, bowling Chirban over excitedly. Adrian laughed and shook his head. Shasta's excitability always kept things interesting. Suddenly he heard a voice behind him. “Papa.” He turned to see who it was, and found Tyto, his baby Grarrl, looking up at him anxiously. He hoisted him onto his lap and smiled, “What's up Ty?” Tyto sighed and wrung his father's shirt through his paws nervously, “Can we go home now? There's too many kids here, it feels like I'm, like I...” he paused, looking for the right word, “Like I can't breathe.” Adrian stroked his head, “I know baby, it can feel pretty crowded in here sometimes, but why don't you go find Vanessa? I'm sure you and she could find a nice quiet place to play.” Tyto sighed and nodded, then slid off his father's lap, brushing past his siblings, Lucy and Danby, roughly. The little Kacheek scowled, “What's his problem?” She asked, twitching her small purple tail in irritation. Adrian sighed, “Nothing Luce, you know how he gets sometimes, he'll be fine.” Danby, the little Shoyru, rolled his eyes and stuck his blue dummy in his mouth. “Whatever it is, I hope he gets over it soon, he's spoiling all our fun, bein' all moody like that.” Tyto wandered into the living room and stood in the doorway, staring at the noise and ruckus playing out before him as pets of all species and colour ran around squealing and laughing, playing with each other. Eventually he spotted Vanessa by herself in the corner. She was batting a rubber ball back and forth between her forepaws absently. Tyto walked up. The baby Kougra looked up when she saw her friend approach, and smiled tiredly. “Hey Tyto,” she murmured, licking a paw and dragging it over one of her enormous sandy coloured ears. “Hey,” Tyto replied, sitting down next to her as she resumed batting her ball around. Shasta ran by, shrieking laughter as Chirban chased him around the room, waving a toy sword threateningly. Vanessa winced and flattened her ears to her head. “C'mon, she said, rising to her paws and beckoning Tyto with her tail, “Let's get outta here, we can go to my room where it's quieter.” Tyto nodded and stood up, following her up the stairs. He sighed gratefully as they put the overwhelming noise behind them. He didn't understand how Shasta, Lucy, and Danby could enjoy playing like that, surrounded by so many other pets that they couldn't hear themselves think. They approached Vanessa's room and she pushed open the door with a paw, “C'mon in,” she said. Trotting across the room, she picked up a pillow in her teeth that was lying in a heap on top of several others next to her crib, and padded back over to her friend. “Here,” she mumbled, dropping it at Tyto's feet and lying down beside him, tucking her forepaws beneath her chest, “You can sit on that. Let's just talk, 'kay Tyto? I don't wanna play right now.” Tyto nodded in agreement and plopped himself down on the pillow. He stuck his thumb in his mouth, and the pair sat in peaceful silence. Eventually they heard footsteps in the corridor outside, and Vanessa yawned, “That's probably my mommy, she must be goin' downstairs to talk to your daddy.” Tyto nodded disinterestedly and mumbled through his thumb, “Yeah, her an' Papa are good friends, they see each other a lot. I wonder what they talk about?” Vanessa shrugged, “Prob'ly just dumb grown-up stuff,” she said, flicking her tail as a lazy fly buzzed past.

~******~ The tall, young man with the disheveled hair smiled as he saw one of his good friends, Heather, a girl with chestnut brown hair and dark, chocolate eyes. She was involved in her usual chaos with her pets as she usually was. Two of her Neopets, Treixise and Traixxes, two of her Xweetok quadruiplets, were arguing in the corner of the room over a a Usuki doll. Three other Neopets ran, Uchiha a 9 year old Biscuit Kougra, Traixxes, a 7 year old Faerie Xweetok and one of the other quadruplets , Dondl, an obnoxious and stuck-up 9 year old Electric Xweetok, wizzed by , following a beautiful and exotic looking 8 year old Eventide Xweetok named Kyyraie, riding her skateboard through the house. They were wearing their safety gear, thank goodness, as Shasta and Chiriban watched in awe.
Heather gave the young man a stressed out and tired smile as Esthe, a 12 year old Biscuit Usul and Lily walked by each trying to sooth and watch two squirming and laughing Baby pets, Fofinha the 1 year old Xweetok and Neiayen, the 1 year old Christmas Kau, each batting at each other and wriggling around in their older sisters arms. The girl was about to say something when, one of her usual cling-ons, Chriscoppe, an 7 year old Electric Acara wrapped his arms around her leg and peeked shyly at Adrian. He gave the man a smile, shy smile once he saw who it was He really liked his Mama’s friend, Adrian.
She ran a tired hand through her hair and smiled as she put a hand on the head of her small charge. She blew hair from around her face as she glanced down at the Electric Acara. It was tough raising 31 pets by yourself. Adrian could see though there was an elderly Blue Elephante with her hair gray wrapped in a bun and a kind looking Cybunny with dark, raven black hair with gray streaks in it., dusting and cleaning and laughing and talking to each other. He smiled, glad Heather had someone helping her with all these kids. They could all be a handful. Shasta and Chiriban bounded up to the gang riding their roller skates and skateboards. Shasta smiled as the group stopped skating, and gazed down at him and the little 2 year old Baby Zafara. He was about to say something when two flying blurs flew into the room. Arajeiane, an excitable and bubbly 6 year old Christmas Zafara with light, blond hair pulled back into two ponytails, smiled and waved at Adrian She bounced with the uncontainable excitement and energy she always seemed to have. Flekno, the 6 year old Rainbow Acara, just smiled and waved as she spotted Shasta. She bounded up to him and gave him a hug. “Hey, Shas, how are you doin’? It’s been awhile since I last saw ya. Wanna play with me and Ara? We could play hide n’ seek or ride on Kyytraie’s skateboard. Would you mind, Kyrrie?” The Eventide Xweetok smiled and shook her head as she picked up the skateboard and headed over to them. “Nah, I don’t mind. I’ll play with the boys later. I can show you a guys a few moves. You guys can ride my skateboard too, just as long as you wear your helmets and shin and arm guards. We don’t want any accidents, like Mama said.
Shasta just meekily nodded as he gave Flekno a quick glance, and looked away, his face flushing. His face flushed redder as she took him by his paw and led him to the backyard. He glared at the snickering boys, kids, and his siblings over his shoulder, his face still beet red. Adrian and Heather gave each other a wink. They knew what it meant. Chirban ran after the girls and Shasta. “Hey, wait up, I want to play toooo!” He followed them out the back door. The boys looked relieved they didn’t have to “watch or play with any annoying, dumb babies” as they went out the front door and skated outside. Heather smiled at their retreating forms, smiled, and shook her head. She took Adrian to the kitchen and led him to one of the many round, wooden tables in the room. She put on a pot of Borovan for Adrian, even though she didn’t like Borovan. She preferred hot apple cider or milk, which she poured a glass for herself, and poured a cup of Borovan for Adrian. Heather sat down and was about to say something when three of her older girls burst through the door, two of them Fuchie and Gemenaie, holding two 5 month old Baby Kacheek named Darciie and the newest addition to the family, Analyiea. They were followed by a cross and angry looking 11 year old Cloud Cybunny. They both stomped out of the room as Fuchie , a fierce and tough 12 year old White Xweetok thrust Darciie into a surprised Adrian’s arms, and Gemenaie, a 11 year old Maracite Kougra did the same with Ana, handing her over to her mother. The girls ignored the stern look their mother gave them as they left, Fuchie and her two sisters glowering at each other and giving their mother a “Don’t Ask” stare as they headed out of the room. Heather let out a groan as she put her hands over her face and rested her elbow on the table. She gave Adrian a tired look before she put her hands over her face again. “A word of advice Adrian, never let your kids grow up. They will become moody, grumpy teenagers and pre-teens.” She let out another groan and sighed. She couldn’t believe she was going to adopt three more girls in a few days. Adrian laughed and gave the girl a sympathetic smile. He understood how hard it could be. His own four kids were a handful and mischievous (except Tyto) and he knew he should beware of the teenage years. He didn’t understand why she was adopting more pets, but he would never say anything.
Adrian shook his head and sighed, shifting a sleepy Darciie in his arms. “They grow up fast, don’t they?” “Yeah, they do. I can’t believe how old my kids are now. It’s hard to believe I used to be the little 12 year old girl with just four pets. Well, you can see that has changed very much!” She smiled dreamily and lovingly down at her youngest child, cradled and sleeping in her arms. “Do you have any pictures of them when they were younger? I’d love to see what they looked like,” Adrian said, taking a sip of his Borovan. “Sure, they’re in the cabinet in the living room. I also have videos. Do you have any?” “Yes, but they are at home and my cousin’s. I could ask Emily if she could bring them over and bring the kids. I’m sure your kids would like to meet them. It would be pretty nice.” Heather nodded her head and smiled. “Sounds good. I will send her a neomail asking her if she wants to come over. I just need to find some paper and a pen. They’re around here somewhere.” “Sounds like a plan.” Adrian said with a smile. They both smiled and nodded. It was going to be a nice time taking a trip down the nostalgia path. They knew what they were going to do that day.

Outside, Shasta stood on the pavement, a red helmet several sizes too big for him perched on his head and sliding down over his eyes. Flekno whizzed past on her sister's skateboard, and Shasta galloped along beside her, “Lemme try, lemme try!” He cried eagerly. Flekno skidded to a stop and jumped off. “Okay,” she said, “But first you have to learn how to balance, hop on and I'll show you.” Shasta did as he was told and gripped the edges of the board with his forepaws, keeping his hind legs ramrod straight to keep from falling off. Suddenly, something arrested his attention and he looke up. “Hey look,” he said, nudging his nose in the direction of Flekno's front door, “It's Auntie Emily an' my cousins, I wonder what they're doin' here.” Flekno shrugged, “I dunno. C'mon, let's keep practising.” In the kitchen, Heather and Adrian heard the doorbell ring. Heather rose from the table, “Come on, I'll bet that's Emily.” They headed out into the living room, where Adrian almost tripped over Lucy and Indigo, who were absorbed in a game of Usukis in the middle of the floor. “Girls, maybe you could move to a different spot,” he suggested, “Someplace less in the way?” “Sure Papa,” Lucy mumbled distractedly, not looking up from what she was doing, or making any move to get out of the way. Heather opened the door and found Emily on the front step. She was in the middle of saying something sternly to her little red Xweetok, and looked up quickly when she heard the door open. “Hello Emily, it's good to see you,” Adrian smiled, coming up behind Heather. “It's good to see you too,” Emily replied, herding her kids through the door using the arm that wasn't holding her infant Aisha, Twilight. Luckki, the infamous starry Zafara who had been so instrumental in expanding Shasta's knowledge base of the world around him, bounded up and grinned. “Hi Uncle Adrian,” he said excitedly, “Did'ja miss me?” Adrian chuckled and ruffled his tuft of blue fur, “Of course I did,” he said. Luckki's sister Talshaia flattened her ears to her head, keeping her head low as she stalked past them and into the corner, a blue leatherbound book clenched in her teeth. The red Xweetok lay down beside the sofa and opened her book, pointedly burying herself in it and giving off an air of one who does not wish to be disturbed. Emily sighed as she shifted Twilight in her arms, “I'm sorry about her,” she said, “She's just in a bad mood because she didn't want to come today. She's one of the oldest ones here, and she just doesn't have patience for the young ones like Luckki does. Not to mention, she's not exactly thrilled about the recent 'home invasion',” she said, indicating Twilight. “She'll get used to it eventually though I'm sure.” Emily, Adrian and Heather made their way back to the kitchen, and Emily put Twilight down with Darciie and Ana, who were crawling around on the floor. “Oh and Adrian, I brought those pictures Heather said you wanted me to bring,” Emily said, fishing a handful of polaroids out of her pocket. Adrian smiled and took them from her, “Excellent,” he said, flipping through them. “Heather and I were just discussing our kids when they were younger, and I wanted to show her what mine looked like.” “Just a minute and I'll go and get my album,” Heather said, getting up. She returned a few minutes later holding a thick, heavy leather-bound book. “Here we are,” she smiled, dusting off the cover and putting it heavily on the table. “It's been a long time since I looked at this, but it'll come back quickly. Let's get started.” Heather opened the book, and the three of them scooted in closer around it to get a better look.

Pictures upon pictures were in the heavy, leather bound book, each of her pets at different stages in their lives. Their was one of a little 12 year old girl with her long, chestnut brown hair in a ponytail surrounded by Esther, Lily, Jay, and Tigger, a then Blue 6 year old Shoyru, but now a older 12 year old Speckled Shoyru. Their was one of her with 8 pets, the amount she meant to originally keep, but soon later adopted four more and even more pets after that. Fuchie, a 8 year old Red Xweetok stared defiantly at the camera, while Lucas waved and smiled, showing his pearly white teeth, and Anita, 7 years old, holding a small, white bundle, little 5 month old Indigo’s head popping up. Heather lingered on the photograph as she gazed down dreamily and lovingly at it, remembering simpler times.
Her eyes teared up and a small, choked sob escaped her throat as she came to the next photo on the page, one with all her current 31 pets. It was incredible to see. All her older kids looked so grown-up and mature, even the younger ones or the pets she only had for a year or had recently gotten. It made me blink back tears and choke back a sob too. One day his little ones were going to look like that too.
Emily smiled gently and put her hands on each of our shoulders. “I know, it’s hard watching them grow up. I can’t believe how old mine are now! That is why I’m glad I have the two babies, even if they are your children, Adrian. I love them very much.”
The young man smiled and nodded. He loved his niece and nephew, plus his two new kids too. He just couldn’t believe how fast they were growing up! Lucy already knew she wanted to be a fashion designer and always wanted to hang out with the big kids, Tyto was still shy and scared of his own shadow, but he was starting to become more open to others and more adventurous, Shasta drank out of a sippy cup now and it appeared he was having his first crush, and Danby was becoming more smarter and more knowledgeable about the world around him, and he was even beginning to read a little with Myziko, his best friend. None of the wanted to spend as much time or be cuddled by their Papa like they used to. It made Adrian sad and happy to think his kids were growing up.
They looked at the poloroids Emily had brought and smiled and laughed and cried as they stared down at the photos. There was one of Lucy and Shasta together, about 5 months old, smiling and gurgling at the camera. Their was another one with all three of his original pets in it, Tyto smaller and younger looking then his two siblings, sucking his thumb and looking shyly at the camera. The next photo almost made Adrian burst into tears, as he gazed at the photo of Danby, the first time he ever held him on Jen’s couch, surrounded by his three little pets. The path of nostalgia could be fun and enjoyable, but it could also be painful and hard to bear.
Heather and Adrian both sniffled and wiped their eyes as they blew there noses and added it to the pile of tissues growing on the wooden, round table. Emily shook her head and laughed softly. They were such big softies.
Heather stood up from the table and closed the big, leather bound photography book. A big puff of dust came from the book as she did so, causing Adrian and Emily to cough and sneeze. She smiled and let out a laugh as she picked up the heavy book and gestured them towards the living room.
“I have a great idea. Let’s round up the kids and watch some old home movies. That should be pretty fun! Did you bring any tapes, Emily?”
“Of course.” she smiled as she pulled out three tapes from her brown leather bag hanging from the side of the chair. They all smiled at each other. It should be pretty fun to watch the movies with their kids. Heather called all the kids together and told them they were going to watch home movies. She was greeted with groans and moans as most of her older pets sighed and rolled their eyes. Their mom was on a nostalgia trip and there was no stopping her.
“Must have been the photography book. That always makes Mom sad and weepy.” muttered Esther to Lily as she shifted Hazeil, their 1 year Baby Wocky sister on her hip. Lily nodded and rolled her eyes.
This only made them laugh harder and smile as they gazed at the sea of pets. They were going on their nostalgia trip and they were bringing their kids with them, whether they liked it or not.

The dishes clanked and clinked against one another as I pulled them out and moved them around as I watched them. I let out a tired sigh as I gazed at the four large piles of dishes before me. It was tough taking care of and keeping up with 31 pets. I loved them all though, even if they didfind new and inventive ways to make me worry and go crazy. The yopunger ones were being quite mischievous and energetic this morning, and my older daughters moody and grumpy. I rolled my eyes as I thought about all the tough and hard work that morning. If only I had known none of that was really important.
Kyrraaie, a 8 year old Eventide Xweetok and Uchiha, a 9 year old Biscuit Kougra wizzed by on their skateboards in the house AGAIN even though I strictly told them they could only skate outside. Indigo, a 3 year old Cybunny, Fofinha, a 1 year old, and Haizeil, a I year old Baby Wocky ran around in circles around the kitchen, squealing and laughing loudly. They had been doing this for 10 minutes straight, and it was driving me crazy. I was about to scold Uchiha and Kyrraie, and send the little ones into another room, when I felt a gentle tug on my white and blue checkered apron.
I looked down and smiled gently when I saw who it was. It was Flekno, my little 6 year old Rainbow Acara. She had been feeling sick lately and I was a little worried about her. I was surprised to see her out of bed; she had been sleeping most of the time and too tired top much of anything because of the medicine the doctor gave her. She let out a little cough as she looked up at me and smiled. I smiled back. I was glad to see her up and about and moving around.
Flekno played with a button on her dark purple jumper with a yellow shirt as clutched a Purple Ruki Skipping Rope tightly in her paw as she gave me a pleading look. “Can I please go and play with Chris and Arajeiane outside? I’m feeling loads better, I promise. I really, really wanna play with ‘em. Please?” She did seem to be feeling and looking a lot better. Maybe, it was because of the heat, maybe it was from the tiring and hectic morning I had, or maybe it was her cute and pleading eyes I couldn’t resist, but against my better judgement I let her go outside to play with her brother Chriscoppe, an Electric Acara, and her sister, Arejeiane, called Ara, a 6 yearold Christmas Zafara. She seemed to be feeling better and have more energy. If only I had known what was going to happen, I would have never left her out of my sight. I was finishing the last dish, all four piles of the clean dishes and silverware stacked in nice, clean piles as I peeked out the window. The sight I saw truly frighten me and will always haunt my memory. I saw Flekno skipping with her jump rope when all of a sudden, she collapsed and fell on the ground. Chriscoppe and Arejeiane gave her a frighten look as they speed towards and ran through the door. I dropped the glass I was cleaning with a loud crack and let out a silent gasp. I called for Lucas, my 13 year old Shadow Ogrin and oldest child to come to to the backyard immedinately. Everything was a blur after that. I remember my two little ones crashing through the door, each hysterical and crying as they told me Flekno had collapsed on the ground and she wasn’t waking up. I had Esther, my Biscuit 12 year old Usul and Lily, my 12 year old Cloud Aisha, watch over everyone as Lucas and crashed through the door, running to where Flekno lay unconscious, her breathing shallow and her body limp as I picked her up and held her close in my arms, tears streaming from my eyes and choked sobs escaping from my throat. Lucas called for a Eyerie Cab, which took the longest 5 minutes of my life, got into the cab with Lucas and Flekno held tightly in my arms, and we were at the hospital. ~******~ I was spreading purple jam on sandwiches, preparing lunch for my four kids and our outing to Kiko Lake that day. It was bright and sunny, and I wanted to get my little ones outside and some fresh air. I was about to prepare the second sandwich when I noticed a familiar shape behind the marbled glass door, surrounded by six little pets. I smiled as I went to the door. It was my good friend Heather with some of her kids. She must have been coming over for a playdate. My smile disappeared as soon as I saw the state they were in. Heather gave me a tiny smile, her eyes red and puffy, and tears streaming down her face. Lucas was trying to smile bravely and appear cheerful to Traixxes, Treixises, Jay, Uchiha, Chriscoppe, and Arejeiane, but even he was having a hard time keeping a brave face. I immediately asked what was wrong. Heather swallowed back a sob from her throat as she tried to answer my question. She gripped her Shadow Ogrins hand tightly. “Flekno is in the hospital. She-she-she is very sick. They say she has a very serious case of Neomonia. I’m going to have to stay at the hospital for a few days. Could you please watch my kids while I’m gone Adrian? The rest are being watched over by friends and my older kids, but I couldn’t find anyone else to watch over the other six here. Could you please watch them? I don’t know anyone else to ask. I don’t know what to do.” He buried her face in her hands and sobbed. I rushed in the worried and scared little pets quickly as I put a hand on my friend’s shoulder. “Of course I can watch them. It will be no problem. Go be with Flekno. I can keep an eye on them.” Heather wrapped me in a tight hug as she put her head on my shoulder. “Thank you for understanding Adrian. I really, really appreciate this. I smiled and gently patted her on the back. “Of course it is fine. You should be with Flekno now.” She pulled away from the hug and nodded. She crouched down and gave each kid a quick kiss and hug, and a promise that everything was going to be alright. Her and Lucas departed to the green Eyrie cab and I closed the door. I sighed as I stared at their sad and worried faces. What was I going to do?

Heather put the first tape in, and Shasta squirmed in his father's lap, where he'd been planted unceremoniously after he and Flekno had been dragged inside against their will. “Papa,” he sighed, “Do we hafta watch these dumb movies? They're so boring, who cares what I was like when I was little? All I did was eat an' cry.” Lucy, who was sitting a little ways off with Indigo, looked up and laughed, “That's all you do now too!” Shasta scowled at her and made as if he were going to jump out of his father's arms, but Adrian held him fast. “Hush kids,” he said, “This won't last long, just be patient, Daddy likes watching what you were like when you were younger, you're all growing up so fast.” He turned his attention back on the TV screen just as the camera panned across the nursery and landed on Tyto, who was lying on his back, his tiny legs flailing in the air as he struggled to sit up, and failed due to the amusingly disproportionate size of his head. Eventually he stopped struggling, exhausted. He put his thumb in his mouth and sighed, letting his head drop to the side. The camera shifted a little to focus on Shasta, who was making his way slowly and deliberately backward down the stairs. Reaching the floor, he turned to face his brother. He broke into a wide grin when he saw him and babbled, “Tydo, Tydo!” Shasta took a few wobbly steps toward him, then tripped over his own feet, landing in a heap beside Tyto. Too tired to bother getting up, he inched his way forward on his tummy until he could reach his brother, then he dropped his head onto Tyto's exposed stomach and sighed. Tyto blinked, surprised, then swung his enormous head round to see what had just happened. He saw Shasta lying on top of him and broke into a loud wail. Adrian laughed from behind the camera and turned it off. “See?” Shasta piped up as the screen went dark, “Even when we was little I was jumpin' on 'im, an' he still cries about it too!” Everyone chuckled, but Tyto scowled and rolled his eyes from the top of the stair where he sat beside Vanessa; he didn't like having to fend off his brother all the time. The camera came back on, and a new scene appeared; Lucy, Shasta and Danby stood on a blustery hilltop, all clutching kite strings in their paws as three little wood and paper kites bobbed about on the breeze. The tip of a red tail in the corner of the shot told that Tyto, while present, had decided to forgo that particular activity. All of a sudden, a great gust of wind blew past, snagging Danby's kite, which was right in the cross-breeze. The force of the wind lurched Danby off his feet and he started to get pulled down the hill. All that could be heard over the noise of the wind blowing into the camera's microphone was a tiny voice wailing, “Papa! Papa heeeeeeeelllp!” Danby's head disappeared from view, and seconds later he was sailing through the air, keeping a tight grip on the string as he screamed. The camera fell and footsteps could be heard running off in the other direction. Adrian's voice came from the distance, “Danby let go of the kite!” The camera lay on its side, filming the grass and trees for another five minutes before Tyto's red paw covered the lens and switched it off. Adrian chuckled, “He was determined not to let go of that thing, even if it carried him all the way to Terror Mountain!” Everyone laughed again, and Danby blushed, smiling a little, “It was a good kite,” he said, “I di'n't wanna lose it.” Adrian smiled and looked up at his friend, “Heather,” he said, “Why don't you show us some of your videos now?” Heather stood up from her spot on the sofa and smiled, “Okay,” she said, “Wait here and I'll fetch them.”

She went to a wooden shelve on the other side of the room, picking out four videos from the wide selection of videos. Heather smiled as she gazed down at them for a minute. She hadn’t watched these for a while, and they were very special to her. She blew off the dust as popped in the first one.
A shaky camera was being held as a young girl turned it towards her face. She smiled widely, her innocent face lighting up with excitement and happiness as she paned the camera on her four youngsters, Ester, Tigger, and Lily. The Green, Blue, and Yellow 6 year old pets waved and giggled at the camera as they made silly faces and laughed at something funny they saw. Heather paned the camera on Jay, a then 2 year old Yellow Ixi. She warbled unsteadily on her tiny legs and in her denim overalls and white shirt, babbling and trying to reach her siblings. She a few times on her bottom, but she managed to make it back up. Jay smiled as she reached her laughing and smiling siblings. The camera shut off and the video went black for a few minutes. “You were so young and sweet then. Now my babies are grown up.” Heather said, smiling at her four original pets, each groaning and blushing with embarrassment. Esther shook her head and sighed. “Mom, sometimes you are too sentimental. This only made Emily and Adrian laugh harder as Heather ejected the video and put the other one in. The other two showed when she got her new pets and their welcomes and greetings to the family. Each pet either moaned, groaned, or laughed when they appeared on screen. They wish their mom would not show these videos to everyone. It was embarrassing! The last video almost made Heather burst into tears as she popped it in. The screen showed two pets coming up in the distance, with a much older 14 year old Heather. The camera panned in on the welcome sign and rested on Fuchie, a then 8 year old Red Xweetok who glared defiantly at the camera, her chin raised up and her arms crossed. Lucas, a then 9 year old Green Ogrin, just smiled and waved as the camera moved on to the two new arrivals. Anita, a then 8 year old Cybunny, holding a tiny white bundle, a small, white Baby Cybunny head peeking from the blanket. Her siblings gathered arrived the new arrivals excitedly as the camera paned in on5 month old Indigo.
Indigo let out a wail as everyone cooed and talked in baby voices to her, expect for Fuchie, who stood off to the side and glared at the new arrivals. The camera was shut off as Heather took Indigo from Anita’s arms and her and all her pets went into the house. Heather wiped tears dripping down her face, as she smiled lovingly down at Indigo, who was perched at her feet. “You were my first little baby pet ever. You are still my baby.” Indigo pouted, crossed her arms, and shook her head. “I’m not a baby. I’m a BIG girl.” putting defendant emphasis on the “big girl” part. This just made Heather laugh as she tousled her hair affectionately. She gazed lovingly at her sea of pets. She loved them all, each and every one individually.

Trying to stay upbeat, I smiled at the kids, “Hey guys, Shasta, Lucy, Tyto, Danby and I were going to visit Kiko Lake today, does that sound like fun? They all just stared at me blankly, then suddenly Chriscoppe burst into tears. “Hey, hey, what's all this?” I asked, kneeling down and resting a hand on his shoulder. Chriscoppe latched onto my shirt sleeve and sobbed, “I don't want Flekno to be sick!” He wailed, “What if she never gets better? We'll never be able to play with each other again if she's stuck in the hospital the rest of her life!” I sighed sadly and pulled him towards me, hugging him as he soaked my shirt with his tears, “Flekno's going to be fine kiddo,” I murmured, trying to sound more certain than I felt, “The doctors and nurses are going to take really good care of her, and in a few days, maybe a week, she's going to be better, and she'll come home and play with you again. Don't be scared Chris, your sister's going to be fine.” Chriscoppe looked up at me as if he didn't quite believe me. He was about to say something when the patter of little feet on the stair interrupted us. “Hey Papa, is the food ready yet? Me an' Lucy got the towels just like you said!” Shasta, my baby Ogrin, skittered into the room and stopped short when he saw all the gloomy faces standing in the corner. Young as he was, he could tell something wasn't right with his friends. “Hey guys, what's wrong?” He asked uncertainly, edging toward me and nudging his head under my arm until his head rested on my knee. Chriscoppe wiped away the last of his tears with the back of his paw and sniffled, “Flekno's real sick, Mommy took her to the hospital an' we gotta stay here til she gets back.” Shasta's eyes darkened and his ears drooped in fear as he backed away anxiously. “H-hospital?” he asked, looking more scared than I could ever remember seeing him, “D-don't you guys know what happens there?” Chriscoppe shook his head, his eyes widening in fear as he scooted backward toward his siblings. “That crazy yellow Scorchio who lives in the lab takes 'em, an' he keeps 'em locked up in a dungeon an' does experiments on 'em. That's what Luckki told me, he says it's how they figured out how to make medicine.” Tears brimmed in his eyes as if he truly believed what he was saying. Chriscoppe started to cry again and I ran a hand through my hair. Scooping Shasta up, I sat down on the sofa with him and beckoned Heather's kids closer. Hoisting Chriscoppe onto the cushions beside me, I put an arm around him as Shasta sat on my lap, nestled into my damp shirt. “Now look,” I said firmly, “That's not true at all. Shas, your cousin was just teasing you, the crazy lab Scorchio does not kidnap sick pets from the hospital, and nobody does experiments on them. The hospital is a place pets go to to get better when they're sick. Doctors take good care of them and give them what they need to get well, it's perfectly safe I promise.” Shasta and Chriscoppe regarded me uncertainly, as if trying to decide whether or not to believe my story. “Can we go see Flekno?” Uchida piped up from the back of the group. “Not today,” I said, “Your mom needs some time alone with her, but I'll neomail her tomorrow to see if it would be okay to come by.” Traixxes twitched her tail nervously, “How'd she get sick anyway?” I shook my head, “I don't know, but the doctors will probably be able to tell you tomorrow.” Deeming it best to end the conversation before the matter could be overthought any more, I slid Shasta off my lap and stood up, “Come on then guys, let's get your beds organised for tonight. I have a spare room down the hall from my kids you can use, come with me and I'll find the sleeping bags.”

I led the six forlorn kids down the hall to where their room was going to be. I glanced over at the kids sadly as we continued down the hall. This must be very tough and hard for them to understand, I was just about near the door when Lucy, Danby, and even Tytp raced the hall to greet their new friends. The smiles from their faces dropped immediantely and stared at the sad and grave looking bunch nervously and worriedly. Lucy was the first to speak up. “What’sa matter guys? Aren’t you herte to play? Did somethin’ happen? Papa , was wrong with them?”
“Flekno is in the hospital. She is really sick” Uchia piped up soflty, gazing sadly at my three little ones. “We’re-we’re not sure what’s going on. Mom wants us to stay here for a few days though. She dropped us off a little bit ago.” His voice cracked at the end, his eyes filled with tears. Jay, the 8 year old Snow Ixi, lay a comforting hoof on his shoulder.
Tyto eyes light up and he smiled when he saw Chriscoppe in the group. He ran towards him and wrapped his little arms around his leg, smiling up at his friend. Chriscoppe managed a shaky smile as he rubbed Tyto’s large, bulbous head. “I’m so glad you guys are stayin’. We can play games, play hide n’ seek, read stories, play with our toys, and visit Kiko Lake! Won’t that be fun! I can’t wait! You guys-“ “Shut-up, just shut-up! Can’t you see we don’t wanna play any dumb games with you stupid babies? Flekno is really, really, really sick and no one’s tellin’ us what’s going on, and-and-and” Traixxes let out a huge, heart breaking sob as he stormed past me, ran into the room, and slammed the door hard. “Traixe” Treixise called after her quadruplet as she ran into the room right after him. Tyto, Chriscoppe, and Arejeiane both started crying as Lucy and Danby stared frightnly up at me. I sigehed as I ran a tired hand through my hair and wrapped the three sobbing ones into a tight hug. It looked like our trip to Kiko Lake would have to wait another day. “It’ll be alright guys, I promise. We’ll try to see Flekno tomorrow.” “You promise?” Uchiha asked, looking at me suspiously. I sighed as I gazed around at all the worried and sad faces. There looked like there was going to be need a talk to. I’ll try my best guys. I really will. Don’t worry, I will. Everything will be alright. They all stared at me skeptically, looking like they only half-believed me. I sighed again and bit my lip. I wasn’t sure either. I just hoped everything would be alright in the end. ~******~ That night, after I got everyone settled in and ready for bed, I sat down at my desk an wrote the letter. I sent it to Heather at the hospital, who wrote back that it would be fine, but I better prepare the kids. She was in a coma-like state, barely breathing on her own and having to use Faerie magic to help her breath. The doctors were very concerned about Flekno. I gazed down worriedly at the letter. I truly hoped that beautiful and sweet little girl would be alright. ~******~
I held Flekno’s hand tightly, not daring to let go as I stroked her Rainbow head gently, the Faerie magic swirling in the air around here and helping her to breath. Lucas and Gray dozed off in a chair, the Shadow Ogrin holding the four year old Starry Kacheek who insisted on coming along.
I glanced up as Adrian as he entered the room with the kids. I smiled weakly as I gazed at them, my puffy and tired eyes giving signs to a tough and hard night. I was about to say something when out of the corner of my eye I saw Gray slip from his brother’s arms and walk over to his sister’s hospital bed, gazing over the railing solemly. What sweet, little soprano sound that came out of his mouth nearly broke Adrian and mine’s heart. "Darkness is here It comes from afar The fear and the fright closes In But not with the brave shining light The light will shine on It will be the torch The Darkness can't stay very long. As long as were brave and keep strong in our hearts The Darkness will fear the truth from the light As long as we keep brave and love in our hearts As long as we keep brave and love in our hearts As long as we keep brave and love in our hearts” Everyone had tears in their eyes as they smiled at the sweet singing boy. He yawned and went back to his brother’s arms, closing his eyes and snuggling closer into his shirt.

Adrian blinked and bit his lip as he watched my daughter lying there. Tyto hid behind his leg, looking frightened. Shasta clambered up onto my chair and pounced onto the bed, landing heavily at Flekno's feet. He picked his way gingerly over the covers until he reached her head. He nosed her cheek gently, placing one of his forepaws lightly on her shoulder. “Please wake up Flekno,” he whispered, his voice cracking, “Please, i-if you don't, who's gonna teach me to skateboard, or-or, help me practise my battledome moves, or – ” he stopped and choked on a silent sob, “Or be me friend?” He lowered his head and closed his eyes, pressing his nose into her furry cheek. From where I sat, I could see a tear course down his cheek and land on the bedsheet. He lay down and curled up next to her, tucking his forefeet under his chest as he rested his head on her shoulder. I watched as his tiny shoulders started to shake as he cried. I felt terrible; he was only a baby, no one that young should ever have to see something like this. Adrian moved forward silently, sliding past my chair as he gently lifted Shasta off the bed and held him against his chest, resting a hand on his head. Shasta buried his head in his father's shoulder and sobbed as Adrian beckoned the rest of his kids to the doorway and stepped outside.
~********~ Shasta clutched my shirt collar as he cried inconsolably, his tears soaking his fur as he gasped for breath. “What's wrong Shas?” I murmured, moving to a park bench near the door. Using the arm that didn't contain my baby Ogrin, I hoisted my other kids onto the bench beside me, and waited until Shasta could talk again. Eventually Shasta sobbed, “I'm so scared Papa, what if – what if she never wakes up? She-she's my friend, I don't want anything to happen to her!” “Don't worry little one,” I whispered, “Nothing's going to happen to her, she'll be fine, you'll see.” “B-but how do you know?” He wailed, not looking up from my shirt. I looked at him, but didn't say anything. The truth was, I didn't. Danby tugged on Shasta's tail gently, and waited until he pulled his face from my shoulder, then mumbled through the dummy in his mouth, “Don' worry Shasta, she's got the faeries lookin' after her, they'll make sure she gets better, won't they Papa?” He looked at me with enormous, unblinking green eyes. I swallowed uncertainly and nodded, trying to smile, “Yeah, see Shas? Flekno's got the faeries looking after her, she'll be fine.” Shasta looked from Danby to me, studying us with watery eyes. Sighing, he nodded. He wiped the last of his tears away with a paw and leaned against me, exhausted by all the emotion, “Okay Papa,” he murmured, “I believe you.” I breathed a silent sight of relief, and hoped that Danby was right about the faeries.
