Banksy has the dubious reputation as one of the world's most successful graffiti artists. People go to great lengths just to get a hold of an original piece. A hotel chain in Australia is capitalizing on this to hold one of the funniest promotions I've heard of. If you successfully steal the $15,000 painting, you get to keep it without fear of prosecution. If you get caught, you have to give it back. Wow, what a promotion. Even their Terms and Conditions for the contest are funny.
Maaaaaaan, who doesn't love a story of an epic heist? And even better in real life with no repercussions! Of course, I hope nobody tries a movie stunt and gets hurt, like getting stuck in an air vent or something. XDD (Then again, that would be hilarious.)
I really hope somebody succeeds. And I hope they do it in an impossibly epic way.

Actually, I live quite near two of the three hotels. =D I wonder if I can sneak in and just have a look at it? They make it sound as if it's hidden somewhere unexpected in one of the hotels...

That sounds awesome. If I lived nearby, had any ideas and had the guts, I would totally participate. xD As it stands though, I'm very keen to see how people try to tackle the challenge.

"It’s Gone! The Banksy No Ball Games was successfully “stolen” from the Blackman Hotel this morning (Monday 19th) at 8:05AM by Maura Tuohy and her accomplice Megan Aney. The theft was carried out in classic art crook style- right under our noses. (Not to fear we have another one. See below.) Excellent work Maura and Megan, we commend you. The Theft Maura Tuohy checked into the hotel on Saturday night pretending to be from an Art Series Hotel agency. She claimed she worked with various members of the agency team and told hotel staff that she was asked to drive the painting to another hotel. Highly suspicious staff asked for a number to phone in order to verify her story. Tuohy provided the number of her accomplice, Megan Aney, who verified the story. After a dozen more questions she then walked the artwork right out of the hotel with the help of the hotel staff, put it in her car, and returned 15 minutes later to brag about her cunning and guile. Excellent work. The heist was a success and followed several failed attempts by other hotel guests including the hacking of three CCTV cameras focused on the Banksy, a listening device being placed underneath the desk at Reception and guests phoned Reception with housekeeping issues in an attempt to get them to step away from the painting." But it looks like there's another one to steal, and that it'll be there until January 15th.  I wonder how long they'll be doing this? |

YES. That was sufficiently epic. Maybe not enough to qualify for "heist movie" status, but definitely good enough for a "Leverage" or "The Real Hustle" episode. :3 Sweeeeeeeet.
