I really didn't think I was going to do this again, but something inside me doesn't want to let the streak die. I'll have to get creative (and bend the rules just a little) but I'm going to do my best to win NaNoWriMo again. Since last year's novel, I've realized that my niche -- at least for now -- lies in short fiction. I always had an idea of this, I suppose. My strength in The Neopian Times was always the short story, and, looking back, those are the work I'm proudest of. So it makes sense. Having said that, my goal for NaNoWriMo this year is to complete a collection of short stories totaling 50,000 words. Now, here's where the rule bending happens: ever since I took a fiction class last spring, I've been producing a few short stories here and there, and I think I'm going to take the best of these and revise them as part of my collection. I'm not going to just plunk in something that's already finished, though -- I'll definitely go through the full editing and rewriting process, which will be pretty extensive I'm sure. But at least that'll give me some flexibility so I won't have to be sitting down to write 1,667 words every single day, which, at this point for me, would be an impossibility. So, we'll see how it goes. ^_^ I'm excited. Here's my NaNo profile for this year, where you can see an excerpt from one of the stories I'm probably going to revise and include. Wish me luck!

So, I'm starting to realize that I write a lot more slowly and carefully when I'm working on a short story. This month might be more challenging than I thought.
On the bright side, I was typing notes into my phone for about an hour and a half as I was lying in bed last night, and I think the story I'm working on is going to come out as one of my best. Quality over quantity, I suppose -- although I'm definitely still shooting for that 50,000. ^_^

Whatever lead I came in with by having some material to revise rather than write from scratch... it's gone. xD Oh gosh. I don't know how this is going to happen.
I now have five stories "finished" with an average of 2,000 words each, and one in the works, which I'm really excited about. I think the quality of writing is pretty good. At the same time, the collection feels oddly empty -- it's not nearly as exciting as working on a novel has been in the past. In some ways, I actually prefer my old writing, because it was so full of energy and passion, even if it was riddle with cliche's. Nowadays, I'm more careful, better constructed, but, I fear, less compelling.
We'll see. Maybe I can get some opinions down the road. ^_^'
