So...I was considering trying to tackle the novel I started during July again, but I don't think I'd get very far with that. I want to do something slightly less complicated...though I'm not sure that this will end up being any less so. XD;
Anyway, some of you might have seen the other idea that I had, with the two girls living in the world in which everyone had random superpowers, and I had some more ideas relating to that idea. So. Maybe I'll go with that?

A lot of this is probably going to change. XD; I'd like it if it made slightly more sense - though this is a story about people with superpowers, so some artistic license is allowed. But still, I think there are some internal inconsistencies. And certainly a lot of things need to be fleshed out.
Meh. I can do it later.

In this world, as was briefly touched on above, everyone manifests some kind of random superpower between the ages of twelve and seventeen. For Mel, it was the ability to create pink sparkles from thin air. She was rather annoyed at this, because she had been hoping for something a bit cooler, or at least more useful. But that's how it goes in this world. Often, people get the powers that least suit their personalities.
Rarely, people get powers that are dangerous to themselves or to others. Like the "power" to set everything on fire whenever they look over their right shoulder, or to turn all the oxygen in a room into toxic gases if they blink five times in quick succession, or something really gruesome. Often, these people are taken away by the (somewhat totalitarian) government as soon as their power manifests, if they haven't managed to kill themselves with it already. The government does have some methods of predicting these types of power manifestations, but they're not widely available and/or aren't necessarily reliable.
One thing that's important to note is that psychics don't exist. Why would anyone think that they exist? That's just silly! Reading minds? Do you have any idea how absurd that sounds? Geez.
...Or it would be absurd, except they do exist. And are shockingly common. But few people are aware of this fact.
Along with taking away the people who endanger the lives of others, the government also takes away the psychics. Most of the society believes that psychic powers would be incredibly invasive and it would be horrible if anyone had them - which may or may not be due to sly propaganda - but in any case, this lines up perfectly with the government's intentions. They probably end up killing most of the psychics, but when they can, they recruit the psychics to help them find more (or do other work for them).

This story is mainly about two girls named Mel and Kaylee.
Mel is serious, studious, and determined to accomplish any goal that she sets for herself. She is fairly introverted, not really needing the company of others. She's a bit uncomfortable with anything that doesn't involve concrete facts, and she hates ambiguity (so she probably has chosen a career path for herself and has her life all planned out, though really, she could go in several different directions). She can be fairly competitive at times. Possibly on the math team or something? She's the one who gets the pink sparkle power.
Kaylee is free-spirited and tends to float between various activities as long as they interest her, which is almost never to the point that she gets really serious about them. She could have been an Olympic-level gymnast, but she disliked the intensity and the competitive atmosphere, so she ended up abandoning that path. She's very athletic and loves most physical activities. She dances a lot and also practices a couple of martial arts. She's homeschooled, which allows her more time to pursue these various activities.
I haven't decided how their relationship develops, but I know that they meet in a martial arts class (probably taekwondo, because that's the only one I know ). It just seems kind of appropriate, because Mel would choose that sort of thing to try to broaden her horizons, and Kaylee would probably already be a black belt because she's awesome at that sort of thing.
Kaylee eventually ends up manifesting a psychic power. She panics and goes to Mel, and they decide to run off together, and then something happens I don't know what that gets them involved in a greater conflict.

A couple of other characters are named Alayna and Hayden. I wrote a scene about them ages ago, and I had no idea what the context might be or anything, but I think that scene and all its implications fit in well here. (Maybe I'll post the scene here, if I can find it.)
Alayna was a psychic working for the government, but she recently escaped. She was forced to bring Hayden along, much to her annoyance, and they've been hiding out together for a few months now. They're both much older than they look - Hayden's physically twelve and Alayna's physically sixteen, but they were both given effective immortality, due to their faithful service to the government and also their relatively rare powers.
The reason I bring this up is because Alayna's started taking out her frustrations on Hayden by killing him repeatedly.
Yeah. She's not a very likable person.
Alayna's determined to start a rebellion against the government. She wants to bring them down. She couldn't figure out how to do it from the inside, so she's going to do it from the outside. No matter what the cost. And she'll drag Mel and Kaylee into it somehow. IDK.
