So I've been meaning to make a thread like this for ages (over a year at least) but somehow I always ended up procrastinating on it and yada yada yada.
This is my music thread! A place where I'll post all the bits and pieces of music that I make. Original compositions, arrangements, recordings, videos and so on. I just hope you like it. =D
Lemme quickly explain my musical background
Also let me warn you: Some of the files are different volumes, so I just hope you don't blast your ears out or think the music's not playing when it's starting reeally softly. Um.
Bits and Pieces
Title: Adagio in C Sharp Major
(Original Composition for piano)
Date: 2009... but is still being revised up to the present.
Notes: I like this piano piece. Sorry for the background noise, that was Mum doing the dishes. I've made some changes to the notes since this recording was done in '09, but they're mostly minor. Heh.

Title: Rhapsody in G Minor. "Procrastination"
(Original Composition for piano)
Date: 2009... but is still being revised up to the present.
Notes: I nicknamed it "procrastination" not because of anything to do with how it sounds, but because in year 12 I did most of the writing while I should have been studying for my exams. I've also revised it from time to time but curiously only when I've had something more urgent I should be doing. The two files below were both recorded in 2009, but the version I have now on paper has some major changes - I've added an opening and an edning that are really really melodramatic.
Also, sorry for playing so many wrong notes in the recordings (especially the second one). >.> I should have practiced it more.

Title: Mage Dungeon
(Original Composition - loop-able soundtrack made in Anvil Studio)
Date: 2008
Notes: Originally composed as background music for Hunter's NTWF game, "Attack of the Spammers". I don't think anything's happened with that game now, but at least I still have a nice piece of music.
File: www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mp3/magedungeon.html
Title: Ninja Guild
(Original Composition - loop-able soundtrack made in Anvil Studio)
Date: 2008
Notes: Originally composed as background music for Hunter's NTWF game, "Attack of the Spammers". It was meant to be Japanese-influenced, I mean with the ninjas and all, but it actually turned out a lot more Chinese in style.
File: www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mp3/ninjaguild2.html
Title: Meepit Duel, Take 2
(Kind of more like an arrangement - a remix, I guess. Anvil Studio. Unfinished.)
Date: 2008
Notes: This was based on a bit of a tune that Hunter wrote for his NTWF game, "Attack of the Spammers", that I then sorta went and had fun with. It was meant to be the kind of music that plays whenever a random battle starts, but I think it'd a little annoying to listen to over and over in any case.

Title: My Name is Mr G with Lame Singing
(Goofing around. Not my original song. Piano + voice recording.)
Date: 2009
Notes: "My Name is Mr G" is actually a song from an Australian comedy TV serial, "Summer Heights High". I learned it on the piano so that an actor friend could sing it at the final assembly of Year 12. She modified the lyrics so it would include the name of the drama teacher at school. The singing on this recording, though, is just me having a lame go at it. (Incidentally, because I'm kinda uncoordinated when I try to sing and play at the same time, I recorded my piano playing and singing separately and then put them over the top of each other.)

Title: Dig and Test, Test and Dig
(Original Music, based on words by Rob the NTWFer. Sibelius.)
Date: 2009
Notes: Written for good practice, to get myself familiar with Sibelius, and to see if I really could compose a tune for set lyrics.
See if you can follow along with the verses of Rob's awesome NT musical, The Tale of Woe: The Musical
Gilly=Soprano
Sophie=Alto
Bruno=Bass
Gilly, Bruno, and Sophie: Dig and test, dig and test.
Working like we’re pets obsessed.
Test and dig, test and dig,
This graveyard certainly is big!
Bruno: I toil to shovel up the earth
And open the caskets: a grisly job.
I guess that death’s a bit like birth –
We join, and then we leave the mob.
Sorry for getting too profound,
It’s just that digging is so boring.
And so philosophy abounds
As a way to keep from snoring.
Gilly, Bruno, and Sophie: Dig and test, dig and test.
Working like we’re pets obsessed.
Test and dig, test and dig,
This graveyard certainly is big!
Gilly: I fetch ingredients for Sophie
And test the bones once they’re exhumed.
We deserve some sort of trophy;
But if we don’t do it, Neovia’s doomed!
This one’s not it, and neither is that;
This process will certainly take a while.
Sorry if I sound like a brat,
But playing with bones just isn’t my style.
Gilly, Bruno, and Sophie: Dig and test, dig and test.
Working like we’re pets obsessed.
Test and dig, test and dig,
This graveyard certainly is big!
Sophie: Making potions, stirring brews;
We must work hard, this is no game.
No time to slack, no time to snooze:
We must discover the Spirit’s name!
This is tedious, make no mistake,
(Curses on that sly Ilere!)
But I have more potion to make –
We might not have enough, I fear.
Gilly, Bruno, and Sophie: Dig and test, dig and test.
Working like we’re pets obsessed.
Test and dig, test and dig,
This graveyard certainly is big!
[Gilly holds up a bone and pours potion on it; it begins to glow.]
Gilly: I think I’ve got it! This is the one!
Bruno: Finally, our work is done.
Sophie: Give it to me, let me see. [she examines the bone]
This one’s it, I do agree.
And now to read what’s on the tombstone!
Finally his name will be known!

Title: Out of My Clutches
(Original Music, based on words by Rob the NTWFer. Sibelius.)
Date: 2010
Notes: I needed to practice tune-writing. I don't think it's actually very singable, I mean, I didn't pay any attention to sticking within the vocal ranges here. But I think the tune's kinda catchy.
The words were from Rob's NT musical: The Return of Sloth: The Musical! I interpreted the exchange between these Garoo and Ylana as a light-hearted kind of comic relief, what with their mutual dislike for each other.
File: www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mid/outofmyclutches02.html
Title: Ulmus
(Original Composition. Kinda abstract. Anvil Studio.)
Date: 2010
Notes: I found out that one of my bonsai plants which I thought was dead was actually aliiiive. The Elm was just dormant for a while over the winter. I was very happy when I saw it sprouting, but I also had a strange feeling about it, like it did the same thing that frankenstein's monster did. So anyway I wrote a wierd piece of music about the little tree silently rising from its earthy slumber. (About the title: Ulmus is the species name for Elm)
File: Caution: Loud-ish. www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mid/ulmus.html
Title: Bopping Rhythm Test
(Original Composition. Very short. Anvil Studio.)
Date: 2011
Notes: When I reinstalled Anvil Studio on my computer (I had some kind of virus on my computer that meant I needed everything wiped off), I felt like giving it a test run. So here's about ten seconds of mildy pop-sounding music.
File: Warning, it's kinda loud. www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mid/boppingrhythmtest.html
Title: Mozart Sonate KV331 - for String Quartet
(Arrangment for Stright Quartet of a work by Mozart. Recorded in Sibelius)
Date: 2011
Notes: This is the "Theme", the first little section in the Theme and Variations KV331 by Mozart, originally a piano piece, arranged for a String Quartet. I take satisfaction in saying this is totally playable for a real String Quartet to perform - I even put bowing marks in. Mostly though I just did this to re-familiarise myself with working in Sibelius 6 since I'd almost forgotten all the keyboard shortcuts and everything.
File: www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mp3/sonatekv331sibeliussounds.html
Title: Film Orchestration Test
(Original Composition. Only about 30 seconds. Sibelius)
Date: 18 September, 2011
Notes: A friend of mine is making a short film and has asked me to do the music for the soundtrack. <3 I think this will be exciting. Anyway here I just did a test to see if I could orchestrate a sequence of music where it goes from being really really quiet - almost inaudible - to a point where the tension is mounting, while sort of having a "film-y" kind of style to it. I haven't started playing around with syncing my music with video files and cues and things yet, but I bet that'll be pretty challenging. And fun.
Unfortunately the music has some balance issues - you can barely hear the trills in the violins, while the viola plucks are much louder. (How unrealistic, Sibelius. Two sections of trilling violins would normally drown a viola plucking, unless the conductor told them to quieten down.) But as a quick test run I think it's still pretty successful.
File: It starts very very soft. (And is in general pretty soft... dunno why.) www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/wav/filmorchestrationtest.html
Whoa, that list took ages to write out. Hopefully I'll have even more stuff to post in future.
Also, I have a couple videos I should probably post - they're old and a little embarrassing, but also kinda nostalgic to me. I'll get around to posting them some time.
This is my music thread! A place where I'll post all the bits and pieces of music that I make. Original compositions, arrangements, recordings, videos and so on. I just hope you like it. =D
Lemme quickly explain my musical background
- I'm a classical music nerd. Classy concert music is pretty much all I listen to for fun.
- I can play viola and piano.
- I did music theory (up to grade 5 AMEB). Technically I know how to write a four-part harmony but most of the time I just composed stuff by a lot of trial and error.
- I looove playing viola in orchestra. <3
- I have two programs for composing: the cheap 'n cheerful Anvil Studio, and the not-so-cheap Sibelius 6.
- I have a microphone for recording stuff, but it only works when plugged into a computer. Ever since I swapped my laptop for a desktop upon graduating from high school I haven't done any more recordings since the piano is in a separate room from the computers... maybe another day I'll get everything organised to re-record some of my old piano things.
Also let me warn you: Some of the files are different volumes, so I just hope you don't blast your ears out or think the music's not playing when it's starting reeally softly. Um.

The words were from Rob's NT musical: The Return of Sloth: The Musical! I interpreted the exchange between these Garoo and Ylana as a light-hearted kind of comic relief, what with their mutual dislike for each other.
Garoo [sarcastically]: Ah, I see the princess awakes.
What happened, my dear? Did you make a mistake?
I thought you were trying to capture that Scout;
Instead, all you did was to let her out –
Out of my clutches. She got away free.
This wouldn’t have happened if Sloth had sent me.
Ylana [standing up]: Come on, Garoo, you know that’s not true.
In my situation, you would have failed too.
This isn’t the place to try and save face;
We have to go find them! Come on, let’s give chase!
Garoo: Too late, Ylana, they’re gone now.
All we can do is figure how
To parcel out the guilt and blame.
I think that most of it is your claim.
Ylana: You stupid oaf, I was surprised!
I had them saying their goodbyes
When suddenly, a child attacked!
Needless to say, I was taken aback.
