Dusk landed in the courtyard, deactivated his wings, and made his way to Dame Primus’ office. Without further ado, he walked straight up to her and shook out the parchment. “Look at this.”
“What's this, something else I need to – oh.” She trailed off abruptly as she read the notice aloud. “The bearer of this permit is hereby given full permission to work with Nothing. Such work includes but is not limited to the production of tools, weapons, and Nithlings. By order of…” Dame Primus’ worried tone dropped abruptly, and she handed the parchment back. “There’s no signature, Noon.” Dusk grimaced a little. Primus was one of the few executives who insisted on calling him Noon, as was formality. Most others still called him by his former name, Dusk. “I don’t see what the problem is. Someone decided to look a little official in their lawbreaking, and forged some documents. Luckily, they clearly weren’t a very accomplished sorcerer, even if they were working with Nothing.”
“No,” said Dusk patiently. “Look at this seal.”
“Noon, it’s blank…” Like Dusk, Primus started as her fingers brushed the cool wax drop. “Whose seal is this? There’s no mark, but…”
“It has all the proper powers behind it.” He looked worried. “I know it’s not one of the Morrow Days, or else I wouldn’t have been able to take it from that Denizen who was holding it. It may be someone’s Noon, perhaps Dawn or Dusk, but even then I would have a harder time destroying it.” To demonstrate his point, he touched the seal briefly. It melted away and vanished, leaving the parchment a useless scrap of paper.
“Very well,” said Dame Primus. “I shall put up a notice instructing everyone to be on their guard and report anyone who is caught conjuring Nithlings, no matter how authorized they are. Thank you for the report.”
Dusk bowed, hiding his annoyance. This obviously wasn't going to help. “You're welcome, ma'am.”
Just then, one of the clerks rushed in looking very flustered. “N-noon, sir, someone here to see you from the Border Sea. She was very insistent, sir.”
“I’ll go talk to her,” said Dusk with a sigh, edging out past the clerk and back into the courtyard.
