Mini-Gloat: I can use my laptop again! \ o / Mini-Rant: The tech person was not able to fix the hinge, and said the only real fix would be to buy an entire new laptop. =/ Mini-Gloat: ...But he did figure out that you can hold down a specific part on the case so that you can at least open it up like normal! =o Mini-Rant: ....Now to be paranoid for several more days about germs and cleanliness on an object I touch all the time, even though I've wiped it down multiple times already, aaugh. oTL Mini-Gloat: But I’m grateful the tech person did what he could and that my laptop is back on my desk and open and operational, so yay~!

I remember years ago while at university, I tagged along with a friend as they went grocery shopping. It blew my mind when she had multiple lists for what she needed, divided between different stores and based on who had the cheapest price for an item. By this point in life I was still figuring out what basic grocery items I needed each week, let alone the best places to get them, so the whole time I was just wondering how one is able to gather the prices for groceries from each store in order to compare them, and how to tell what's a reasonable price or not.
Well today, as I sat at my desk in the morning looking through various websites and apps while making three different grocery lists based on store and cheapest price, I realized that I had become the person that boggled my mind two or three years ago. Character development xD

In my youth, in elementary school, we had library days. Days where we came in to the library for short lessons on how to find books, doing activities, playing games, or the like. And in the early days, we youngin's were introduced to WorldCat, a directory for finding books anywhere in the world.
And little me beheld the site and its cat-like logo at the time, and went "aww, world cat!". For I liked kitties.
But since then, and through all those years, I wondered why they called it that. Why WorldCat? It felt random. Did the people who made it really like cats?
No, I thought when I was older and an adult. For they had dropped the cat logo by then. But then why do they call it that?
Fast forward to tonight, while I was looking up information for bibliographies...
"Oh! World Catalogue!"
I finally got it. It only took me over 2 decades.

A year ago, or two years ago (?? a CERTAIN year in the not so distant past) the Fashionable colour of fashion that popped up on new clothes was a striking golden yellow. Sometimes mustardy, sometimes dull ochre depending on the quality, but the fashion was definitely matte gold. It looked especially good when paired with black and other neutral tones, and also rocked with dark blues. This year, I've spotted it making a comeback in people's winter wardrobes. It's such a striking colour that I can tell what year the piece of clothing was bought. (well no not exactly what year because no sense of time, but I can tell it was THAT year) The new fashionable colour that popped up on new clothes this winter is a bright red. Now as people dress according to temperature shifts, the two colours are popping up together in the same oufits - coat and scarf, for instance. They look very nice together.
They also look exactly like ketchup and mustard, or well-done fries with ketchup.
I'm not sure that people who invest in the fashionable colour every year are going for a look that's reminiscent of fast food. It looks very nice to me though.

Missed a bus that comes once an hour, so decided to walk. That meant I got to see pretty rolling hills and farmland though, so that was nice!
EDIT: missed another bus, and this one travels along the motorway soooo...waiting another hour it is. xD

Why did I ever take this long to start using .txt files instead of word or odt files for random notes that don't need formatting anyway? It's so much easier and smaller and easier to get to. xD
(It's also better for drafting posts, as it turns out. It doesn't try to autocorrect platform-specific formatting.)

A few days ago, my parents and I were visiting a nature center with various live animals to look at. As we were checking out a snake's tank, this happened:
Me: Y'know, I've actually considered getting a pet snake at some point. Mom: *makes disgusted noise and shudders* Dad: I'd... rather you not do that. Me: Hm. *immediately starts googling proper pet snake care and tips*
Watch in a decade or whenever I get my own house as I get not only a pet snake, but chickens and dogs and who knows what other kind of animals my family thought they'd never have to deal with xD

In France, April Fools are called April Fish, and represented by little paper fish that kids cut out and stick to people's backs, especially if they got to make fish in school for the occasion. No one really knows where that comes from. It's not nearly on the same level as other yearly holidays. It's more like a "huh why are these kids dropping badly glued fish - oh, right".
When people borrow books, we give them the due date on a little paper slip which doubles as a bookmark. It's a good way to reuse leaflets from cancelled events.
For this week, I cut out special fish-shaped bookmarks from colourful paper to give out with due dates stamped on them. Wasn't sure how they'd be received, but coworkers were fans, kids were pleased, and elders giggled too. Good to know people still have a sense of humour.

No one really knows where that comes from. It's not nearly on the same level as other yearly holidays. It's more like a "huh why are these kids dropping badly glued fish - oh, right". Ooh, I (might) know this one =D There was a passage about April Fools in a book I translated about a year ago: "One theory is that April Fool’s Day began in France in the 16th century. In 1564 the country changed its calendar to the modern Gregorian version, moving the start of the year from the last week in March to 1 January. People who failed to adopt the new timetable – and continued to celebrate New Year on the wrong day – were branded as ‘fools’. In France, the recipients of April Fool jokes are still known as poisson d’avril (April fish) because they are said to be easily caught out. Italians use the same analogy: pesce d’aprile." (Would "caught out" translate into a pun? Because it sure sounds like it'd be a pun.) It goes on to list a few other theories of origin, including Chaucer or the Romans, because whenever there's shenanigans, it's reasonable to suspect Chaucer and/or the Romans. Whether there's truth in any of it is anyone's guess, though. (Personally, I'd much prefer the Cute Fish Holiday over the Any Dumb Pranks Kids Can Generate holiday and I strongly suspect that these feelings will intensify once my kids get older, but right now they're still blissfully oblivious :'D Maybe I can convince them to get onboard the fish train.)

A few times in my life, I have encountered the following scenario. I have two works. One is so much better on all technical levels, while the other is...it is hardly bad, far from it, but it is a lesser work on a purely technical level. Maybe its characters are less developed, or there is more of the central stuff that makes the work and genre appealing. I recognise its technical superiority...but I still love the lesser work more. Either because it has themes that speak to me more or because it evoked emotions in me that the other one did not. It feels weird to be so unabashedly in love with the "lesser" work, especially because you recognise its flaws and the lack of those flaws in the other work. Nor can you fully explain why you're so in love with the thing without diving into a lot of your own philosophy and emotions, which can be vulnerable.
Just shows how subjective art is, and "good" art is not only about the technical quality of a piece but about the heart of the viewer.

I'm finally going to commit to my decision to cut back caffeine, gradually but still as quickly as possible. Everything in moderation, and despite it having some health benefits it can't be good for my mental health (let alone the heart problems which run on my dad's side of the family) to have spent roughly ten years of my life reliant on at least a few cups of coffee per day. I've yammered about this resolution enough...and I'm increasingly seriously convinced that there's merit to the idea. Even cutting back for only several hours resets my tolerance and makes me wired with the next cup. Imagine how much clearer my mind would be if I were actually more consistent with the habit.

I... feel I need to change my avatar here. But I kind of want something different then my old Peanuts one, and I have no idea what to use. And... as I was saying/typing that "If this were any other forum, I'd just use an actual picture" I got the idea to use an actual picture and use a website/app to turn it into a sketch/drawing. Hmm.... Maybe.

I bought Sims 4 on sale two days ago. I don't want to know just how many hours I've sunk into it already, it is...a lot! xD
(The vampire-sims are so adorable with their funny little noises and teasing! <3)

Knowing that what I post on social media will go basically unnoticed can sometimes be a comforting thing, but other times it can be incredibly lonely or discouraging. I keep going back and forth on wanting to change this and build an audience but then backing out of it for fear of failure or the pressure of my behavior always being scrutinized. It's hard figuring out which path is better for me sometimes.
