Ahhhh... I've never done this before. Well, I did try NaNoWriMo last year, but failed due to- -Sick goat I tried to nurse back to health over 3 weeks (failed with that, too) T-otal lack of plot So I'm trying this again, but... oh, I'm really nervous. But, ok, here goes. Years of labor and research have perfected the Puran Strain- a genetically modified version of a now-extinct species. Purans have been given powers and the greatest responisbility of all- to uphold the law. But to do this, they have paid the greatest cost...
Amryl is the daughter of the Captain of the Puran Guard, saddled with a rather unremarkable power and feels useless in a sea of soldiers until a 'falling star' throws her tiny, organised and docile world into chaos. Could this seemingly sweet boy who calls himself Fari really be one of the dangerous Varient Strain, with a power that could destroy the utopia Amryl's father tried so hard to build? Or is it really a utopia at all?
EDIT- changed title characters names. Thoughts? Encouragement? I don't know what to do here... ;A;Hit 50k yesterday, but the plot itself still has a good bit to go. In any case, I'm taking a break to return to Neopets thingssss. <3

=D Utopia stories are awesome! Especially when they're secretly dystopias. I love those.
Don't be nervous! I'm sure it'll be epic.

Last time I checked, I'd done only, like.... 3k words. DX I hate starting new stuff. Must.... write.... *angst*
Speaking of angst, it needs more angst. Or happiness. Or emotion in general. *dies* Worst idea ever, start a NaNo in which no one has emotion.

I think I'll go have some for supper. *starry eyes* As soon as NaNo's over, come here and we'll have a post-writing party. There shall be tea and cookies and I could put Fruits Basket the anime on hold from the library. I've been watching it on YouTube in my spare time and recording little 30 second segments on my phone. Kyo's voice in the dub is pretty awesome. @w@ By the way, how many do you typically write in a day? I struggle to hit 1k. DX

Ok, since I thiiink I hit 10k yesterday (won't submit word count until just after church next Sunday- I'm posting two little segments. And I made the two main characters Ryl and 'Shadow' emotionless and mute, respectivly. ...Oops? We'll see if I don't kill them both off by December. "Sit here, Shadow, I'm going to read to you all about the native of Jaedr and their ways."
"'Long before our race, the Purans, fled to Jaedr from the toxic influence of the Varients, there were a tiny tribe of creatures called Iskin. Iskin are short, humanoid creatures with large eyes and fine fur, and with distinctly curving ears and long tails.' See?" Here she pointed to a tiny ink drawing. "That's what they look like- and they only come up to about halfway up my thigh. See, Shadow?"
Shadow leaned forward, keeping the blank expression as usual. By now, his disintrest had ceased to bother her, and she continued on with her narrative.
"'Iskin are flashy creatures, and enjoy painting themselves with plant dyes and adorning their brightly colored hair with feathers and the like. They keep the domestic caprine Mestosta for meat and milk, keeping the long tusks closely trimmed and in the days of the volcanoes would cauterise such things'. Cauterise means they'd burn the ends to seal out infection, Shadow. And here's a picture of a Mestosta. "
The four legged creature stood nearly five times the height of the Iskin that calmly led it by a chain attached to the downward curving tusks that sprouted from it's lower jaw, and stared at the reader with two sets of docile eyes set in bare mottled flesh.
"'Mestosta herds are tended by the Iskin still to this day, but the great defenders of the herds, the mighty Surin died out when the Purans destoryed the volcanos.'" Here a six-legged beast with a pair of white stripes that ran from nose to tail adorned the page, with two sharp looking black horns jutting out of the top of it's head. The eyes were slightly slanted and almost glowed, and the canine-like muzzle was held high as the feline-esque paws tore impatiently at the stony ground it stood on as it surveyed the ragged landscape. "'They refused to seek the higher grounds with the Iskin when the Purans began to form what would become the must fertile islands in the universe, and so died when the seasonal rains flooded Jaedr all the way to the tops of the now-sealed volcanoes.'"
Here, unbidden, Shadow leaned closer and rested his head on Ryl's shoulder to get a better look. As she stared at the picture, a strange pricking sensation made her eyes water, and a few tears few onto the book before she closed it quickly and stood up. Um, just so you know, the Purans (that's the emotionless superheroes) invaded Jaedr just a couple decades ago. ^^ A cloud of drowsiness had seemed to settle over Ryl, slowing her steps and her reaction time as she followed the crowds back to the Domestic Ring and to her own room, sliding her ID card at the door to unlock it.
"Laina?" she called into the dark kitchen as she stepped through the door, stomach churning with hunger. Drawing the conclusion that she was the first one home from the silence that answered her, Ryl decided to retire to her own room and see what Shadow had been up too.
She heard the faint but distinct sound of a pigment pen hard at work, and expected to see Shadow bent over her book, hard at work learning her language. The last thing she expected to see, however, was what she saw.
Shadow was standing with his back to the door, carefully putting the finishing touches on the picture he had drawn on the opposite wall. He had pulled the bookshelves and bureau out of the way, even, as he inked in more detail, glancing occasionally at Ryl's book on the history of the Fringes for reference.
Ryl had never seen art before- it was often reguarded as taboo, a byproduct of emotion, and something that was not encouraged in the Puran society- and so was totally in awe of and unprepared for the scene that unfolded itself on her bedroom wall.
It was of a Surin, a female, who was almost stumbling on her six legs as she carried a pup with mere nubs of horns in her mouth, water dripping off of both as they entered what looked to be some kind of massive underwater cave where air had become trapped, perhaps, in a volcano eruption. A male Surin, distinguished by his pronged anters in comparison to the gently curving spears of the female, raised his damp head wearily from the other two pups that were pressed against his side on the dry sand on the far side of the cave.
Shadow turned suddenly as she entered, eyes glowing an intense green that quickly faded into the more typical grayish shade, but Ryl was too transfixed by the image to really notice until the spell the art had cast over her dissolved.
"Shadow!" She hissed, with all the unhappiness and scolding a loyal rule-follower would show a rule-breaker, "this sort of thing isn't allowed in here, and certainly not on my wall! Here, " she yanked the sheet off her bed and, standing precariously on a bookshelf, covered the picture with the sheet and held it in place with some thumbtacks she found on the surface of her desk "See? It's still there, but we have to hide it or you'll get in trouble. If you must draw, please," she picked up a sheet of the untouched paper and a new pigment pen, " use this!"
She made a wriggly line on the paper, and Shadow dipped his head as Ryl sat heavily down on her bed and sighed, forcing the stress out of her young body and brushing her hair out of her hazel eyes with the back of her hand. He's gonna be the death of her. BTW, if anyone feels like drawing this, please go ahead. (Rain, do you remember that old story of mine, 'De'Symara'? The Narnia ripoff with living wishes and birdpeople/human hybrids? Yeah, the Surin's from there. ^^ Recycling's good for the planet and the fantasy author). EDIT- fixed typos. Saro can't spell.

*craves attention*
Urgerno's History lesson was simple and sent her home with only a small amount of content to study before the morning, and Riskada showed no traces of abnormality in his behavior, apart from the uneasy feeling Ryl got whenever he looked her way, so she continued her way home as if nothing was wrong.
"Hey, Ryl, wait for me!"
Zash almost ran her over in his haste to catch her, shooting along the hallway and just skidding to a stop- or at least a partial one- before colliding with her from behind. Ryl turned and greeted her brother with a dip of her head, secretly pleased to see him. Somehow, it felt like she hadn't seen his face in a long time.
"Hello, Zash. Ready to head home?"
"You bet." He nodded enthusiastically. "I'm starving for some of Laina's food. Breakfast is ok, but... I like her food better." He added the last part in a low voice, still a little uncertain about showing favoritism.
"Me, too," confessed Ryl as Shadow caught up to them and took her free hand, his whole body oozing a cheerful mood that seemed contagious. No, it was contagious- part of his abilities. Ryl could feel her own heart jumpstarting to probably match his own.
"Tone it down a little," she warned him under her breath when Zash was hailed in the hallway by one of his classmates. "At least until we reach the cable cars."
Shadow gave her a curious look, then let go her her hand and shrugged, purple eyes gaining a mask of gray by the time Zash had turned his attention back to them.
"Is something going on between you to? You're acting kinda.... different?" He surveyed them both with innocently interested blue eyes. Ryl stiffened, as Shadow returned the gaze mildly.
"What do you mean, different?" Ryl tried to keep her tone calm, but she could not truly hide anything from her brother. He raised one eyebrow, only in time for Shadow to suggest coolly, "Is that really a wise thing to discuss here?"
There was an odd moment of silence as Shadow locked eyes with Zash, and the former made a face of deep concentration; Ryl was about ready to break said silence and change the subject, when her brother went "Oh."
"Oh?" She passed a look to Shadow, who seemed pleased with himself again. "Oh," he echoed, as if it was an answer.
As the two males continued on their own way, Ryl tried to force away the feeling that they were teasing her again, and reminded herself to scold them both later on acting emotional in public. Also, question Shadow about the 'Oh'.
Soon, all were seating in the cable car and on their way back to the apartment, Shadow seated beside her and watcing the ocean pass by through the window, Zash across from her and seeming to struggle to say something, and herself really begining to feel suspicious.
"I hope you guys are happier than I was with Tsura," Zash concluded at last, looking down and shyly. Shadow nodded. "I hope so, too."
For a moment, Ryl's mind went totally blank. Then she turned her gaze onto the boy beside her and screamed mentally at him, 'What did you tell him?'
'I told him I loved you,' he replied, leaning against the slightly cusioned seat and keeping his face a perfect mask of calm as he replied pyschically. 'Would you rather me tell him the truth and endanger him, too?'
'No,' she relented, trying to match his level of discression but, judging from the confused look Zash was giving her, failing. 'But why would say something like that?'
'Because he won't want to discuss it- at least not in front of you, and therefore keeping you from decieveing him. See?' A faint smile outlined his lips. 'Everyone wins.'
'But aren't you lying to him?'
Shadow opened his eyes and fixed her in their pink intensity. "Am I?"
Gosh, I really love these guys. This little section probably puts me at 48k. Almost to my goal of 50k, yet... still far from the finish line. DX My plot takes on a life of its own like that.
