OMGWHEENANOISM!
In any case, I'm excited for this year, and determined to get past that pesky 50K word limit I didn't last year. (Though 40K last year is still my best attempt ever, and something to be proud of. ^^) I actually started writing my story for Aly (the mage I use for the Guilds). It was fun.
This year's story, I don't quite have planned out, but oh well. ^^ I want to make this into an RPG, actually, but I figured that since I have no plot I might as well use NaNo to force myself to make one and tweak it. ^^
Although I'm starting to have the 'everyone's ideas are better than mine...' feeling...>.<
The characters should be interesting. So far, I've got this.
Setting: Gaiar (my medieval fantasy world, which encompasses my mages, fantasy creatures, and vampires/werewolves, plus whatever else I think of). Specifically, the Reian Islands, a group of islands in the Wandering Isles that is a few months' sail from the mainland and known for the many dragons that inhabit its diverse climate. Each element of dragon (earth, wind, fire, water, dark, light, and ice) claims their own territory, and leads the species in its domain. Humans have only recently settled there from the mainland, mainly looking to conquer.
As of now, there is a temporary peace established on the islands, thanks to the efforts of a young wind mage and dragon and a rare, unique silver dragon, known for controlling time. (But that's another story. ^^ And I've violated one of the rules for using that for NaNo already.)
Characters: The main party will number eight in total once everyone joins, though not all the time. Eri and Ves are my main two protagonists. In order of joining--
Eriza Emerson (Eri): A girl of 17 with short and pure red hair and brilliant green eyes. Contrary to popular opinion, she is a developed earth mage, and an experienced fighter. She hires herself out as a solitary mercenary to the small villages on the Reian islands, and resides in Merita on the east coast. She has been living on her own for several years now.
Eri's primary weapons are her specialized knives, which are shaped in arcs like a third-circle and made of a strengthened, blue-ish metal that shines like water. She wears very little, with a short 'shirt' and shorts that leave her arms, her knees-down, and her belly exposed. She relies on extreme speed and bracers made from metal and jade on her forearms and shins to counter attacks.
Unbeknownst to her father when he was left alone with her, his wife was a dragon, temporarily taking human form. It was told to her that this is where her fiery looks and personality come from, with her ability for earth magic lending itself to that as well.
Vesri Koprin (Ves): A boy of 18 years with dark skin and black hair. He came from the desert country of Haira only a year or two ago, with a large Felyr named Haun, leaving behind his family. He worked with glass and mages that dealt with enchantment, befriending many and developing his own things. One of these is a ruby-red, clear lens that sits above his forehead on a simple cloth band and allows him to see magic/enchantments around him, much like a mage. He happened to meet Eri when they both fought through the same small base, joining forces for a common purpose.
Though he carries a dagger with him, his primary weapons are light silver chains with a ball of heavy metal on either end, which he strikes with or captures an enemy with. These are charged with lightning magic, which feeds on the energy in his blood (left from his father's heritage as a Berzerker). It's effective, but it wasn't created by him and is permanently attached to him (though one end or another will come off for the purpose of being used), and also causes him pain when he has used it too much.
Dragons raided his town in Haira a few years before he left, and he took up dragon hunting with other men in revenge. He then decided to travel to the Wandering Isles, believed to be the root of dragons, though he realized when he arrived that their numbers were too great for the small handful of humans there to fight against. He's been taking it small steps at a time, starting with shadow dragons, as that wouldn't bring more than one element down on him should something go wrong.
Haun: A Felyr of about 340 years, wood-brown with black stripes and a bobcat tail. He's pretty big. He also joined up with Ves shortly before they left to sail for the Reian islands, and has served as a guide and friend. Most Felyr are familiars in service to a mage's line, but since Ves is not a true mage, Haun remains unbound to him. The two respect each other deeply, though they don't have a connection like Sati and Kiren.
Haun is strange among Mystics (a group of magical/special species not including humans, like Felyrs and dragons), as he does not have any ability to sense magic, though he can use lightning magic fine. He relies on Ves's little invention for that. It does protect him a little from magical influence, but usually it just makes it harder for him to tell where a threat is.
Infernia: A young, defiant fire dragon of about 30 years and a shifting red-orange coat of scales. She escaped from her clan, which advocated strong support in favor of shadow dragons, and reluctantly allied herself with Ves and Eri in hopes of fighting them. Rash and hot-headed, she is loyal only to her ideals, and tends to go to one extreme or another. She primarily uses fire and a little fire magic when needed, as well as tooth and claw to fight. Though she can easily get into a conflict, she does try her best to get out of it without help.
Riyal: A middle-aged shadow dragon of around 130 years, coal-black in color. Quiet and reasonable, he joins Eri and Ves's cause on the grounds that he can tell them something about what will happen and doesn't want to be a part of it. He can be sly and uses words to get out of predicaments when he can. He is only average with physical fighting, so he tends to use his own dark magic to confuse or affect enemies, and either run away, beat them, or turn them against other enemies and watch them fight. He looks suspicious to the rest of the group, especially since he never bothers to deny or support it. But he still fights with them.
Sati Syrlalien: A young woman of 19, with a raven-black curtain of hair and oriental features. Her family name was Sorensson, but she takes up her current name ('Storm winds' in Ancient) now. Kiren is her inseparable companion. The two met when Sati went into the mountains near her village searching for a way to come to an understanding between the dragons raiding villages on the coast and people like the men of her village who were out to hunt dragons. After a long, drawn-out conflict, sacrifices, and guarding and helping the hatchling Silver dragon to maturity, they eventually left the island strong enough to stand on its own. They are now out to find other unique dragons, beginning with the Masked and Shining dragons.
Sati herself is much more experienced than when she started out. She is great with manipulating wind and air, especially when working with Kiren, and also good with disguises and deception. Her primary weapon is her staff and a little martial arts. Though very cool-headed most of the time, she can occasionally work herself up into anger.
Kiren: A young wind dragon of a vibrant violet sheen, around 54 years old. She has been traveling with Sati for two years. Their objectives are about the same. Kiren is the one who gave Sati her mage-name and is the more experienced of the two in terms of knowledge of the Wandering Isles. Like Sati, she is skilled in disguise and deception as well as some wind magic, but she focuses on fighting and fire (which does not burn, but can easily suffocate any creature caught in its 'flames').
Marren Aolyr: A man of 25 years with a mess of orange hair, glasses, and a bandanna around his neck. A merchant and a friend of Sati's, come from the country of Tirann on the mainland. He knows her well and supports her, though he still tries to make money when he can. In addition to trading goods (mostly herbs, ingredients, spices, and small items), he is also an adept water mage and enchanter. He uses magic as his primary weapon, and though light-hearted and smiling most of the time, he thinks very seriously.
So...yeah. Typical traveling around to places and beating the crap out of bad guys. I'm trying to develop this into something better and more involved, of course. It will be set around rising conflict on the Reian Islands, with shadow dragons being the center of that force.
