OMG I'M SO EXCITED!!!
I already know what I'm doing. Although I suppose there's always the very real possibility that I'll change my mind 12 hours before NaNo starts.
THE PLAN: Newt & Ammerit
Some of you may remember my short story, "The Draikess and the Red Coat." Those characters developed into human OCs in a fantasy universe loosely influenced by some select Celtic myths. (As well as some English myths.) They characters and their fantastic world tend to lend themselves better to short stories than novels, and I'm working on a short story compilation involving them. So that's the plan. ^_^

What happened today in the story:
Newt and Ammerit are marooned on an island. Newt seems suspicious of the freshwater river's origin . . . and possibly its denizens. Ammerit left him to take a look around the island, and just as she was about to check out the south shore, she spotted smoke coming up from the east shore. What could it be?

What happened yesterday in the story (couldn't post last night because my internet went out):
Flashed forward briefly to a scene when Newt went home.
Back to the story at hand, Newt discovered the mouth of a tiny cave, where the freshwater was gushing from. He slipped inside the cavern and discovered a Naiad, a freshwater mermaid. After some discussion with her, Newt discovered that this island is serving as a prison for unwanted sapients, one of which is a murderous Kelpie. Newt left the Naiad without provoking her possessive greed, but now must find Ammerit and figure out just what he's gotten them into.

What's happening in the story:
Ammerit met the Kelpie and survived only because another sailor shouted and startled the Kelpie. A ship is sailing into the cove of the island, and Ammerit sees plenty of reasons to suspect the worst of its captain and crew. As it sails in silently, and the pirates around the island and warning each other, Newt has been knocked unconscious in the secret cavern of the Naiad.

What happened today:
Newt is taken captive by the Naiad, to serve as her personal storyteller in a dark cell in the bowels of the island. Ammerit has identified the approaching ship as the Iron Serpent, captained by a notoriously violent wealthy pirate. The shipwrecked men on the island intend to keep hidden for fear of the wrath of Captain Black Jack, until they notice that the pirates aren't coming on the island for provisions. They're bringing treasure to bury.

What's been happening:
Ammerit uses her feminine wiles to lure several more of the pirates onto the island where they can be quietly picked off by the sailors. She is chased by three of them through the island, and she leads them straight to the den of the Kelpie, which promptly traps and drowns two of them. Newt manages to escape from the Naiad and meets back up with Ammerit just before the sailors take on the clothes of the pirates and row up to the Iron Serpent, with Ammerit being shown off as their prisoner. Ammerit and the sailors get onto the Iron Serpent, and all-out swashbuckling war ensues. Newt heads for Captain Black Jack, and their swords meet....
