Throwing out a hand at Mai, who was about to zoom forward and explain, Sirach took a deep breath and said, "That place is where the Un-Elf Elves live. Very dangerous elves. They look like overgrown elves six feet tall, and they don't like random creatures like us running, walking, or even standing with one toe in their territory. They like waving huge axes over their heads and couldn't care less what - or who - they hit."
He shuddered, and added softly, "They killed my parents."

Jeylu's testy expression drops away as his slit pupils widen again. "I'm sorry," he says quietly. "I-I didn't know." He looks away. "What do you think we should do?" He asks, shifting from foot to foot. "We--I have to get to the bottom of whatever's attacking my tribe. I can't just...not do anything."

"Sounds like we could finally be havin' some fun," Thaligar says, fingering his axe, "Anythin' better 'n trudgin' thousands of miles through the frozen north lookin' fer the northest, most frozen place for some durned gnomish science expirement!"
"Haven't I yet impressed on you the very great importance of these measurements? It might well revolutionize the science of navigatorial--" Even the gnome understood the stubornness of the dwarf's expression. There was a 99.943% chance that Thaligar would insist on dealing with these "un-elf elves", and until he did, the scientific expedition would be delayed. "Well, at least we should devise a plan of action. This alone would increase our chance of survival, and thus of meeting the scientific objectives of the expedition, by at least 13%..."

"Perhaps we should talk to the medicine man of my tribe?" asked Jeylu. "If the...'Un-Elf Elves' are so close, he may know something more about them, and how to get past them."
