The buzzing got, if anything, louder. Jeylu covered his ears. "Can't you make that thing do something else?" he asked Gimbosh.

Nutyo crashed to the ground. His demon ears couldn't handle the buzzing the machince was making. He screamed in agony.
"Turn it off!!" screamed Alovi desperately. "It's killing him, please!!"
The machince's buzzing noise kept getting louder and louder and Nuyto was slowly recovering. Finally he got up, just fine. "A low frequency sound can kill and demon but we can understand a high frequency. The guy on the machine is saying..."

"..'What's going on, K2-SE? Have you been kidnapped? Who are these people?' "
"Should we reply?" Jeylu asked in a low voice. "None of us is K2-SE...I suppose that was the trader. He..wasn't too keen when he saw me making off with this..thing."
" Now he's saying, 'K2-SE, reply now or I shall shut off this device!' "
"Better do or say something quick," said Jeylu.

"I am here master," Nuyto responded in a heavy accent.
"Good good, next time I talk to you K2-SE, respond immediatly or else." the machine said in a high voice.
"What do you need sir?" Nuyto tried to get information out of the machine.
"I need..."

"...your report on that Sirian Elf village." Jeylu stiffened, and bit down on his lip to keep from speaking. "What have you got from them? How many of our K5's are on the way?"

Thaligar sneaked up toward the machine and silently pulled Gimbosh aside. "I need ye to determine where that transmission be's comin from, and ye need te do it without alerting whoever be's on the other side that anythin's happenin here."
It was evident that Thaligar was actually somewhat familiar with gnomish communicators, though this wasn't really that suprising given that the dwarven clan to which he belonged lived in close proximity to the gnomish community to which Gimbosh belonged.

The gnome began working quickly on the device, and jabbering at high speed (but in a low voice, which is a plus for him) that he thought the signal was coming from the north, close to the north pole. Immediately after making this statement, he began explaining theories of why this was, which broadened into theories on the north pole in general, and soon the party was listening to a gnomish thesis paper written out in whole. Jeylu winced and swiftly clapped a hand over the gnome's moving mouth. It kept moving. ((Keldor your gnome is so easy to take over >< )) The machine crackled and the picture flashed. You get the feeling whoever-it-was is getting impatient waiting for an answer.

"Answer it!" hissed Mai. "Then again...oh, what the heck, can I just burn this thing into ashes so we never have to deal with it again?"
"Mai!" Sirach scolded the fairy. "Honestly!" He grabbed the device and spoke into it. "Where do you want us to go? What do you want us to do? Who are you and will you respond...coherently?" He stressed that last word.

The machine crackled a bit longer, as if hesistant. "I need your presence at the stronghold immediately. And K2-SE, I want to know where you picked up these people and why you felt compelled to bring them along." The voice sounded annoyed on that last note. "You'd better have a good explanation. KA out." The picture and the sound then disappeared with a snap of static.

"Well, I suppose we'd better be headin north then," Thaligar said, "We need te be careful, though, if this place be a stronghold, who knows what be waitin fer interferers like us?"
"I heartily agree," Gimbosh said, "the presence of a stronghold at the target location will no doubt influence any measurements that take place at the said location. Therefore, in order for these measurements to be of sufficient accuracy to be of value, we must be careful to handle the measurements of any interference that the stronghold may pose, I would hypothisize that if we were to take measurements at the nodes of a 100 by 100 mile grid set about the pole, with each grid line 1 mile displaced from its nearest parallel neighbor, that this should produce a background measurement of the macro scale to which the micro scale measurements may be calibrated. However, care must be taken..."
"Bah, that gnome wouldn't get the point if it be'd on a sharpened spear two inches from his nose."

Without a word, Jeylu nodded slightly and began marching north, hardly waiting for the others to catch up. His jaw was set determinedly and his eyes glared up at the mountains that marked the northern pole. ((and I'm thinking this but Jeylu's probably not--shouldn't the Sirian Elf village be told what's happening in case something bad happens? Unless of course, all of our characters ARE stupid enough to rush into adventure without telling anyone where they're going... ))

Sirach scowled at the device as it crackled and blacked out. With a sigh, he plunged it into a huge pocket in his coat. "Well, maybe we can at least have it around when it buzzes in again," he said, then looked up to where Jeylu was walking off to.
"Wait," he called out. "Wait, don't you go that way! I know we're told to go north, but there are other ways to go north, you know! Hey, aren't you listening to me? That place is...is..."
The elf swore under his breath and sprinted to catch up. Mai raised her eyebrows and zoomed after him, but not before stopping before the rest and bellowing out in a flurry of orange sparks, "Nobody move till he and I get back with Mister Impulsive I've-Gotta-Obey-The-Almighty-Gadget-Of-Awesomeness."

Oddly enough, Thaligar does not in fact ignore the faerie's warnings and stamp forward anyway. In fact, the dwarf simply stands with his arms crossed, waiting for Sirach and Mai to drag the sirian elf back.
Meanwhile, Gimbosh's voice can be heard chattering away. "That was an interesting hypothesis put forth by the elf. How might one travel north without in fact going north, but instead traveling some other way? I wonder if he was refering to the theory that by traveling far enough south, one may cross the south pole such that one is then traveling north, albiet on the opposite side of the world. Nevertheless, this seems unlikely, given the rather drastic loss of efficiency that this would incur..."

Jeylu looks baffled by Sirach's explanation, but comes back to the group. "Allright, spill," he grumbles. "What do you know?" His cat-like slit-pupils are very narrow and it's hard to tell what he's thinking as he fingers his knife hilt.
