Whenever the crew of the White Weewoo needs to take a break from looting due to, ahem, overenthusiastic law enforcement of various countries, we sometimes dock near Dunburrow and have a nice long break known only to those who don't have to worry about stuff like work and taxes. Especially taxes. And to pass the time, we sometimes have the meepits race. Because they need some healthy exercise when we're not out at sea, otherwise they get lazy and fat and start bickering.
And because we wouldn't want to deny you this occasionally-completely-hilarious form of entertainment, we're inviting you all to watch the race and place bets on the meepits. Posh hats and talking with a British accent is optional.First off, let's meet the contestants, shall we? 1. Nightingale Symphony (in the middle on the picture) A fiercely competitive, singleminded meepit who thinks that 'fair game' is some sort of an exotic fruit. Fairly likely to win, but just as likely to get disqualified for one reason or other. 2. Pandora Amaretto (second from right) Has a fierce rivalry with Nightingale Symphony and often turns the races into personal contests with him. Usually maintains a good shape and relies on his own skills rather than dirty tricks. 3. Zero Punctuation (second from left) Doesn't care about anything else besides winning. This attitude would make him a definite favorite in most races if he relied more on training and less on caffeine and Red Bull to give him that crucial boost to get past the others. The spirit is willing but the flesh is often too weak to keep up with the show. 4. Gardenia Brigadier (rightmost) A well-trained, well-focused meepit whose one big weakness is his mindset: namely, the fact that he's aiming for fame, fortune, and impressing da laydeez. Especially the latter. Therefore tends to get distracted every once in a while in order to flash a smile at some particularly attractive meepitess on the sidelines. 5. George (leftmost) A meepit with a Big Dream but no professional training whatsoever, George is a complete rookie in the world of meepit racing and doesn't know anything about the framework besides 'there's the finish line and I want to win'. Compared to the others, has a significant disadvantage, but maybe sometimes big dreams also come true? The RulesFor the meepits, there's a bunch they may or may not follow, but that's our concern =D For you, it's simple. The races take place every day at Whenever We Get Around To Starting Them (I'd like to give a definite time, but with timezones and other assorted factors I don't want to pin it down too firmly. But it'll generally be sometime around late in the eveningish in the States.) For each round, you can place a bet, stating the name of the meepit you're betting for and the amount of shinies you'll be putting on him. There's a minimum bet of ten shinies, but you're free to put as much above that as you like. All the bets go in the pot for that day. Once the race starts, two six-sided dice are rolled for each competing meepit and one eight-sided die for George. The highest number wins, and the money in the pot is equally distributed between the people who bet on that meepit. Which isn't quite the best way to distribute winnings, but it's 3:30 in the morning and my brain is really hazy, so I'll vary the rules behind the winnings sometime later. We're pirates, we can do whatever we want with rules, especially for fake money, so watch this space :3 Aaaand the first race commences in one day. Get betting, people.

( I don't need shinies from the Guild Shop Wars do I?)
I'll bet 20 shinies on George, if I may.

I'll bet 15 on Nightingale and get around to figuring out how the odds should be stacked.

I'll bet 15 on Nightingale and get around to figuring out how the odds should be stacked. It would make sense just to split it according to how much each person bet. So if you had 16, 20, and 30 on the winner and the total pot was 300, then the first person would get 73, the second would get 91, and the last would get 136.

I meant the odds of each meepit winning. If you just rolled two 1-sided dice for each meepit, then the probability of any one winning would be 1 in 5. But since you roll a single 8-sided die for George, the stats become a lot more complex. If this were set up like most races, the money you get from choosing the winning meepit is inversely proportional to the odds that that meepit will win. And really, I think Hunty would rather structure it that way than this. As it is, all the money bet goes straight back to the betters, the house doesn't get any money. But if you set it up with odds, you can make it so that the house always makes a profit in the long run.

Well I work the chances out at 1 in 5.162564998 for a trained meepit win, 1 in 12.89379211 for a George win, and 1 in 6.773477606 for a draw. And yay for uneeded extra accuracy =D

But if you set it up with odds, you can make it so that the house always makes a profit in the long run. Actually I'd very much rather structure it by odds and variables, but I only ever started to give it a thought last night when setting this thread up, and by that time I was much distracted by a bunch of cute little sleep-sheep prancing around on my keyboard. The thing with the 'winners get pot divided' system is, it'd go awry if nobody bets on the winner. That way the house probably would get everything, but since this is a game and not a profit-oriented thing, there wouldn't be much fun in that. (...stop looking at me like that. I'm not ill or an evil clone >> Srsly.) I figured that each meepit could in the future get a variable based on where they placed in the race, with everyone's bets getting given back multiplied by the same variable, but that'd in essence be a no-lose game where everyone would get their money back, and where's the gamble in that? Unless only the first three meepits get variables and the last two get nothing. Yeah, this still needs a little thought xD

[glow=red,2,300]Aaaaaand they're off! Zero Punctuation take an immediate lead, bounding out of the starting gate! He's followed closely by George, that eager little beaver! George sure is showing a lot of promise out there, folks! Gardenia Brigadier's mind does not seem to be on the race, folks. No, he seems to be... looking out into the stands? Pandora Amaretto is catching up with Nightingale Symphony. But... oh my, a mysterious dust-cloud has formed in the middle of the race track! Oh my... I can't see a thing! The meepits are coughing out there, folks. Aaaand bursting out of the dust-cloud come Zero Punctuation and Nightingale Symphony! They're neck-and-neck... looks like this one is gonna be close, folks. ZP's eyes are narrow and focused... or maybe he jsut really needs to pee, I can't quite tell.
OH! Zero Punctuation has tripped! He's gonna be sore in the morning, folks. And the winner is... NIGHTINGALE SYMPHONY!
A rather bored-looking Meepit at the betting counter hands Fraze a bag of 90 shinies. "Thank you, come again." [/glow][rand=86209111526720484999454346025669744881730743445229159591074736035]

A rather bored-looking Meepit at the betting counter hands Fraze a bag of 90 shinies. "Thank you, come again." [/glow] "Ah, thank you." Fraze takes the bag of shines, reaches in and leaves five on the counter. ----- After doing my own math, I found George has a 1 in 51.63702012 chance of winning, and all others have a 1 in 4.07899359 chance of winning. That includes the odds of tying and re-rolling. That said, I bet 20 shinies on Gardenia.
