Since we're quite new, I decided it would be best to talk things over with everyone before I went ahead and started the roleplay ^_^
My visualization of the mercenaries:
An efficient, secretive organization which has a base in the mountains. We have several contacts in nearby cities and towns, who help arrange missions. There isn't much hierarchy, but various roles are assigned, both combat-related (i.e. tactical specialist, magic specialist, sharpshooters, hand-to-hand fighers...) and within the organization itself.
All mercenaries must undergo a training period upon first entering the group, ending in a skills assessment. After this, they decide upon a specialization based on their strongest talents (if they so desire) and are assigned their duties. (For roleplay purposes, you can decide to be an existing mercenary or you can come in as if you're a new applicant.)
Large-scale missions (such as when soldiers are hired by warring nations or clans) are assigned to groups of mercenaries, but the smaller missions (assassinations, thefts, and so on) are usually accepted by volunteers... unless no one seems to want the job. Then someone usually gets forced into it.
