I thought this would be a good idea Since there are so many classifications. You don't have to keep to these, of course... Tell me if there's any more I should add in.
(This is rather biased by the mythology of Railinnon, I should warn you. XD But with... other things stuck in.)
Sorcerer/Sorceress: Generic terms for a magic user. Also called enchanters, enchantresses, witches, wizards, mages, and magicians. It should be mentioned that "witch" sometimes refers to a sorceress who prefers to work through rituals, herbs, and "traditional" means. Also, "magician" and "wizard" sometimes refer to sorcerers (or sorceresses) who work magic for a living - either in research, or for show.
Healer: A magic user capable of healing by magic. Many healers use herbs as well as magic, which gives them considerable knowledge of poison as well. Some healers have weak magical capabilities, but not all.
Elementalist: A magic user with control over a given element. These include:
-Fire: power over flames
-Water: power over the water
-Wind/Air: power over the winds and air
-Earth: power over plants, rock, and soil - sometimes involves healing powers as well
-Light: power over all things shiny. Often associated with the forces of good, and sometimes includes healing powers.
-Darkness/Shadow: power over darkness. Often associated with the forces of evil, though there are good dark elementalists.
-Spirit: power over illusions, mist, the mind. Associated with Seers, though not all spirit elementalists have that power.
-Ice: power over ice. Sometimes associated with water.
-Lightning/electricity: power over lightning and electric currents.
-Storm: power over the weather - water, wind, and lightning.
Chronomancy: A mage with the ability to manipulate time and move through it.
Necromancy: A mage with the ability to raise the dead. Most of them are evil.
Technomancy: A mage with the ability to manipulate technology easily. Rather rare.
Seer: A mage with the ability to see into the future. Most are spirit elementalists.
Sage: A highly gifted and studied mage, often with the ability of prophecy. Sometimes called "Archmage," though that term can also refer to a head mage.
Guardian: A mage with powers linked to a magical artifact. This is a rather tricky definition. The artifacts of a Guardian are usually very old, very magical, and will only activate for a single person per generation - sometimes even fewer than that.
Shapeshifter: A mage with the ability to change his or her shape. It should be noted that this ability sometimes is species-linked, and some shapeshifters have no other magical ability.
