I know this is off topic but how do you measure "experienced author"? How do you define it?

I would hope than an experienced author has experience.....
Anyways, a good method I use to show characters' emotion is in their dialogue. Rather than:
"Do we have to?" he said.
you could write:
"Do we have to?" he groaned, hiding underneath his blankets.
You just add some more detail and action besides what they say to convey their feelings and be more accurate. It's simple, but surprisingly effective.
