- make sure articles are 1,000 words or more - make sure short stories are 1,500 words or more - make sure continued stories have between 3 - 8 parts and are around 2,000 words in length per part I just though I'd make not of these word count things because quite often I write a great article and wonder why it wasn't published, it's becaue it was just too short. It's a bit silly having these recommendations in the auto-response e-mail... ladee_sarah

Everything I write is always around 1,500 words, so I'm usually all set without checking the word count. And it's not always the number of words that makes the length; you could make an article about Transmogrification Potions that has the exact same wording as, say, an article about the Pant Devil, and wonder why they're different lengths.
Glad you could make it, ladee_sarah! I don't think there's a formal welcome here, but...welcome!

Well, this word count thingy is just a way of saying that you need to say something in your NT works. I am a mostly article writer as I rarely have the stamina to write stories, and I know that one of the important things about article writing is having enough to say, You HAVE to have enough to say about a given topic/them/idea to write a good article. The more the better.
Of course there is such as thing has having too much to say - in my last article I left out a lot of material I would have liked to have covered. In that case, either divide up your article into two-three parts, or try and make it concise and focus on the main idea(s) without beaing the reader to death with the same thing over and over again.
I think that the latter is the best scenario - it's usually means it is very meaningful and well-written, very little repetiiion, and a lot gets covered.

I go for 2,000 words on both short stories and series parts, which is why they can be pretty long sometimes

I guess I qualify as an article writer. I have gotten 13 articles published (along with 3 comics and a short story). I make sure I have a point to my article before writing. It seems like a simple thing, but it's easy to lose track of what the purpose of your article is when you start typing away. I start out asking myself a question, like "Why are there so many Chias as battledome challengers?" I wrote my "Neopia's Most Terrifying Pet" article based on that. If your answer to the question is short and/or obvious, I do as much research as I can on the subject. I read past issues of the Neopian Times, the Neopedia, the Gallery of Evil, or any other source that looks like it could have information on my subject. I then use my research to "prove" my points. This helps "pad" an article that is too short--- and also offers "proof" of whatever point you are trying to make. This is a much better route than conducting "interviews". Interviews are merely another OPINION. You already have one. The idea is to convince your readers that you are RIGHT. Anyway, that's the way I do it.

And sometimes words make the story too cluttererd. Look at "I Never Promised You Forever" by shidi. It's a very short story with def. less then 1,000 words! But it's one of the best times stories I've ever read.

I could offer a very cruel answer, Wingoffire... But, I always seem to forget word count. My problem is more the writing of the story, and getting an idea, not getting it published. (Did that make ANY sense???)

[glow=pink,2,300]What if an article was 979 words? Would that be accepted? *covers face as if someone is about to hit her... not knowing what kind of an answer she will get*[/glow]
