Think I might throw in on this craziness this year, too. <.< Really shouldn't, but go figure. See what'll happen, I guess.
Anyway, I was just telling Carrie about a Writer's Toolbox I'd picked up a month or two back. Thought I'd offer it's services to people. Comes with some things to help get the juices going, whether within your story or as a separate exercise:
The First Sentence sticks. Self-explanatory. The Non-Sequiter. A sudden change or something to write about. Pushes you to think in a creative way and circumstance. The Last Straw. Conflict-causer, creates a dramatic arc of sorts.
Those can be used together (in a series of 3-6 minute writing spurts as the guide suggests), or separately.
Protagonist Game - Spin the wheels to come up with ideas for characters, goals, obstacles, etc.
The Sixth Sense cards - Mostly to help get the descriptive things going. Each card has one of six areas on it (one of the five senses plus memory). Shuffle, draw three cards. Turn over the first card write for three minutes in great detail about what it says (i.e. The Taste of Almonds). After three minutes, turn over the next card, another three minute spurt (connected to the first). Repeat with the third. Helps get you thinking about how to connect things together, as well as description. Again, can work as a separate standalone exercise or to add into your own story for random purposes...
If anyone would like some spurring on, just contact me and I'll see what I can prod you with.

Saaay, for those of you more experienced with this than me, does it matter when/if you come up with a title for your novel? I mean, would we have to come up with one before NaNo starts, or does it matter if we ever come up with one at all? Just wondering, 'cause I kinda have no idea what to call mine yet. ;

Some people I know can NOT write their story without knowing the title. Personally, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It's not a rule or anything. ^_~

Well, I went to my kick-off tonight. Place was impossible to find - I can't even explain, it was in an artist's colony and we just wandered around industrial space for probably 15 minutes before ascending some steps, poking around, and finding a door. It was locked, but then some people yelled "ARE YOU NANO PEOPLE" and we finally found it. xD Unfortunately, everything was supposed to be outside... but it was raining, so yeah. T_T
I met a few interesting people. x3 Also, a glow bracelet broke and oozed glowy stuff onto my hand... and I was physically glowing. Yep. xD

...sadly, we'll be off to the province for a day or two. I'll really have to get my rear in gear if I want to make up for those lost days![/shadow]

Please tell me it's not, please tell me it's not . . . - Wiki's nanowrimo articleSo to answer your question, NaNo is something that's happening IRL, as in, the world over; but no, it is not a contest, and there are no prizes.

Oh, just wondering, but there was like this minimum amount of words you should write in a day... Does anyone know how much that is?

Oh, just wondering, but there was like this minimum amount of words you should write in a day... Does anyone know how much that is? On Wikipedia, it says 1666 and 2/3, which is usually rounded to 1667. EDIT: Then again, that's 'an average of.' But that's a good number to think about when writing.
