Chronomancy 101 By Scar Dessan Chronomancy is an age old art established by the god of time Chronos so that he could outsource his work to lesser mortals. Gives him more time to slack off and play with the other gods and goddesses. The basics of chronomancy involve the direct or indirect manipulation of time and its closely linked cousin, space. Chronomancy being a subtle art with no loud bangs or flashes, most chronomancers rely on direct methods rather than indirect methods, which take time and patience to set up and normally don’t show any tangible results. The scope of a chronomancer’s powers is limited to a number of factors. One is the knowledge that the chronomancer has in manipulating the streams of time. This involves anything from: slowing, stopping, speeding up, replacing, removing or moving time. Slowing, stopping and speeding up time is a straightforward process. Replacing, removing or moving time involves a large history book and lots of proper planning. The latter three involves the manipulation of segments of time throughout history – past, present or future – and reinserting the segments elsewhere. While time is similar to energy there still exists the possibility of lost time and reinserting fragments of time taken from sources, mostly the future (also known as ‘theoretical presents’ among chronomancers), to ensure history isn’t affected too badly is part and parcel of a chronomancer’s knowledge base. The next scope is space. Chronomancers as a rule can only affect a limited area of time and space, be it as small as a marble or as large as a whole realm. Areas under the effect of a chronomancer’s influence are considered to be ‘outside’ the time stream and any changes to the area of influence will take effect when the chronomancer releases or loses control over the area. The size of the area of influence depends on the chronomancer’s experience and skill. Only Chronos is truly able to affect the entire course of time … if he’s not too busy. The last scope is contracts. All forms of chronomancy from every realm in existence is headed by the Chronomancer’s League, an organization of chronomancers and administrators who ensure most of Chronos’ work is done and remains undone. Chronomancers typically have access to all forms of time manipulation by the League imposes harsh restrictions on the use of chronomancy. All chronomancers under the League’s jurisdiction must file magically-binding documents on any form of chronomancy (direct or indirect) that they use, either intentionally or unintentionally. Any chronomancer who breaches the terms of their contract (signed when they join the League) or who refuse or neglect to file proper paperwork will be dealt with according to the League’s laws. The harshest punishment according to the League’s laws is murder using chronomancy and if found guilty the chronomancer’s ‘theoretical presents’ may be adjusted or limited by Chronos himself to ensure the worst possible path in the time stream. Justice may come in time but it happens. Chronomancers for millennia have used various forms of time-keeping devices as focus items to concentrate and enhance their scope of chronomancy. For example, Scar Dessan uses an early 19th century gold pocket watch to channel time and as well as a fashion statement. All focus devices must be registered at the League before use in the field |
