Angelis Luci - part 3
The Ninja HQ was located on a small island just off the shore of main NTWF. Occasionally small schooners would shuttle people over to the docks near the HQ, but for the most part, it remained isolated. The ninjas had no need of ships, they merely teleported. Fox Phoenix Kiddo was waiting for her ninjas in the main audience chamber of the structure. A silk painting of a phoenix battling a dragon illuminated the wall behind her. The rest of the room was covered in the rice paper and bamboo walls of traditional Japanese fashion, also decorated with paintings. Mountains, villages, and animals sprawled across the pale sheets of light. At the far end of the room was a raised platform with two pillows and two low tables. On one of these sat Kiddo, her wings folded behind her, hands on her knees, and her red and gold kimono smoothed carefully across her legs. Beside her lay her sword and wakazashi. Slowly, the rest of the ninjas filed in and took places on the floor, removing their swords and laying them before them. Finally, the last few stragglers trailed in and found their places. Wanderer sat at the other pillow on the dais in a matching yukata, his white hair a sharp contrast to the deep red. Crystal-sama was at the base of the platform, just next to Stal-sama. As soon as everyone was settled, silence fell and all eyes turned to Kiddo for instructions. “There is only one thing holding our plan back from success,” she began. Kiddo always went straight for the point when dealing with her fellow ninjas. “The invaders have an airship. I have no idea how they got it into our realm but the thing is massive. It makes the Darigan Citadel look like a piece of dandelion fluff.” She grimaced and surveyed the small band of ninjas. “This thing needs to be taken down. Our fortress is vulnerable to an aerial assault and this airship has more than enough capability to blow it to smithereens. As this is an extremely important mission I will only trust our most capable ninjas. Myself, Wanderer, and Crystal will infiltrate the airship. The rest of you will be assigned smaller missions intended to disrupt the ground assault of the invaders. Stal-sama will direct those while I and the other sensei are gone. I bid all of you the best of luck.” She stood and bowed. Everyone in the room bowed in return. Then Wanderer and Crystal stood as well and quietly exited the room, leaving the rest of the ninjas behind to receive their instructions. Back in the Ninja HQ war room Crystal, Kiddo, and Wanderer studied a map. The central NTWF occupied most of the map with the rest fading off into nothingness, labeled the gray lands. A small island hovered at the tip of the main NTWF and all around it spanned colored thumbtacks, marking the last actual position and estimated position of the resident pirate ship. “They’re approaching from this direction,” Kiddo said, tracing her finger across the eastern edge of the map, “and their airship is smack dab in the middle of their forces. Its defenses are extensive but they seem ill-prepared to defend against a small force such as ours. The demons must never have faced ninjas before.” “Are they really demons?” Crystal asked. Kiddo leaned heavily on the table and her fox ears went back. She seemed to be fighting with some internal turmoil. “I only know what I saw,” she finally said in a rough and pained voice, “and even if they are not really demons, they certainly deserve the name. The list of the missing. I said our ninjas would be looking for them only to reassure the NTWFers. There’s no hope of them coming back. The invaders are killing everything in their path. And I don’t understand why…” She trailed off and it was easy to see that she was fighting back tears. Both Wanderer and Crystal were silent out of respect until finally the woman straightened and brushed back her short brown hair. “Alright,” she said, “We can do this. Meet me by the main gate in fifteen minutes with your full gear. Prepare any spells, scrolls, and weapons you may require. We’ll teleport as close as we can and go from foot until night. Then I’ll fly all of us in – yes – I can carry both of you. It’ll be difficult but that’s why I studied to be an air mage.” Kiddo nodded, almost to reassure herself. “Hey,” Crystal said, “We’ll be fine. We’re 1337, you know.” “And I’m here to protect you,” Wanderer added softly. “I’m the fox-phoenix.” “I’ll still protect you.” She turned to him and dropped her eyes. “You can’t protect me from everything.” And then she turned and hurried from the room.
****** In another part of the world, the NTWF as a whole was also preparing for the impending war. A spotted leopard slowly packed her backpack, seemingly lost in thought as she did so. She was to get her things together and then report at the edge of the amphitheater for her assignment. Her and her fellow team members would be serving as a rear guard, part of the group that would fight the running battle to give the rest of the NTWF time to retreat into Sabreur’s fortress. “I’ve been standing here for about five minutes,” a bemused voice said from above her head. She yelped and spun around, falling on her back in an ungraceful heap. A large tawny bear stood over her, grinning from ear to ear. “Huggsy!” Spot cried, “Don’t scare me like that.” “Sorry,” he shrugged, “But it’s so rare that you get to sneak up on a leopard.” She grumbled something in return and inspected the contents of her backpack. A water canteen, some travel rations, and her trusty sketchpad and pencil. “No weapons?” Huggsy asked. In response Spot raised a hand and unsheathed her dagger-like claws. “Ah.” The leopard stood and shouldered the backpack. It didn’t have that much in it but for some reason it felt like a ton of bricks. “Why us?” she mused, “Why this place?” Around her, the bustle of the NTWF seemed just like any other day. Forumners ran to and fro, yelling and tossing things back and forth. The sun seemed no less brighter and the birds didn’t sing any softer this day. Indeed, if it weren’t for the meeting she would probably be off in a field somewhere, maybe on a picnic with her friends. There would be a tree in blossom over their heads and a lake nearby to catch trout in… “…completely ignoring me.” Huggy’s sardonic voice finally intruded in on her thoughts. She shook herself. “I’m sorry. I was just thinking… about how normal today seems. And yet…” “And yet we all could die in the next couple of hours. I know.” “Don’t say that.” He shrugged and turned away. “It’s the truth. You looked at the list of missing NTWFers? JH is on it, as is Fjord, Snorkles… oh, it goes on and on. There’s one that must be a little bit personal too – Kiddo’s eyrie Un-eairkagh is missing.” “How could this have happened?” “I don’t know. Maybe random chance? Fate? Or did they seek us out because of the size and power of our realm? Who knows. Maybe we’ll find out once we win.” Spot looked up at the sky. The shadows were growing longer and soon she would be needed with the rest of her team. “I need to be going.” Huggsy nodded. “Alright then. Good luck to you.” “You too.” The two parted and Spot’s straight walk faltered a bit, her eyes growing misty and the ground blurring before her. “Huggsy,” she said, not turning around, “are we fighting demons?” “There’s more things in heaven and earth…” the bear replied, “Godspeed Spot.” “I think the ninjas will need that more than us,” she whispered, “but thanks.” She didn’t add the last bit of that conversation that was floating in her mind. It was too painful to give voice to, like uprooting a thorn bush. Thanks. I’ll see you again, one way or another. The shadows were stretching further away from her. She had to be going, quickly, or she would be late.

Angelis Luci - part 4
“I can’t believe it…. After all these months of searching.” The figure slowly turned in a circle, mouth agape at what he was seeing. A seemingly endless stretch of hallway petered out into darkness to his right. Doors lined every inch of this span of rich redwood. To his left the hallway ended abruptly in a field of wildflowers and butterflies. The sky outside was overcast and the edges of this meadow were hidden by gray mist. “And they called me crazy!” he cackled, rubbing his jelly hands together gleefully, “Just they wait! I found it!” A head peaked in from the meadow. It belonged to a striped eyrie carrying a portable kiln across one shoulder and a rather bemused expression on his face. “Found what again?” he asked. “This is magnificent!” The jelly llama wasn’t listening. “Just magnificent!” “It’s just a hallway,” Un-eairkagh commented. JH stopped in his examination of one of the doors and turned towards the eyrie, an expression of disbelief on his face. “Just a hallway? JUST a hallway!?” he exclaimed. “This, my feather-brained friend, is every tabloiders dream and my worst nightmare. Watch.” He flung one of the doors open. A closet was inside, completely empty. The jelly llama raised his camera and snapped a picture. A thin slip of white and black slid out the bottom and he whipped it out for the eyrie’s inspection. Un-eairkagh leaned in close and stared at it, blinking occasionally. “There’s nothing there,” he finally said, “Did you forget to use flash?” “Nope! You see, this place is an isolated area of the gray lands. No one can enter except for those the current resident wants to enter. Furthermore, this place is entirely camera-proof. Like I said, my worst nightmare.” He paused, resting his chin on one hoof. The blank photograph fluttered to the floor and Un-eairkagh wandered back out into the meadow in disinterest. “But how to bring back proof,” JH murmured, “They didn’t take my word for it last time and they certainly won’t take Un-eairkagh’s either… and cameras don’t work…” “Hey JH! Butterflies!” The llama snarled but didn’t move from his spot in the hallway. “I’m trying to THINK here!” he cried, “We’ve got to get proof back to the forum. Any suggestions would be most welcome right now.” The eyrie’s head popped into the hallway again. This time, brightly colored wings stuck out from either end of his beak. “Actually,” he said around a full mouth, “I think these might be fairies.” JH rolled his eyes in disgust.
“Oh, forget it.”
****** From her vantage point on the back of a white uni Lady Jade Phoenix was able to easily survey the majority of the exodus that was taking place. Already the crowd had filed off into a long line of people and were winding their way towards the fortress. Near the border of central NTWF the assigned patrols were preparing for a night of fighting. And somewhere in this world the ninjas were doing their duty as best as they could. “How many do you think will return?” a voice asked softly at her elbow. Patjade glanced down at Rider. “I’d rather not speculate on that,” the elf replied testily, “especially not in public.” “Sorry.” There was an awkward silence between the two. Patjade finally broke it. “You’re worried, aren’t you?” “A lot more then that.” And her voice finally cracked. Sniffling, the pirate wiped away tears with her oversized sleeves. Pat had to look away. “It’s a good plan,” she continued with difficulty, “Kiddo knows what she’s doing. She said she didn’t want anyone to cry either.” “I can’t help it. Those stupid ninjas, having to be the heroes. All that stuff about not fearing death – can’t they just say no for once?” “This is a time for heroes,” Pat replied softly, “I think we will all have a chance at it before this is up.” “No. I don’t want anyone to be a hero. Not if it means I’ll never see them again.” “There’s still hope.” “Not if the ashes are scattered. You know how it works. KIDDO! You – you – you – who am I going to fight now!? HUH!?” She screamed the last phrase at the sky and then panting, fell to her knees. Quietly, Patjade slipped off the uni’s back and knelt by her side. “Shhh,” she comforted, “This has to be done. We have no chance with the airship still in existence.” Rider just rocked back and forth, stabbing at the ground with a slender piece of metal, triangular at the blade and with a loop of metal at the other end. “What’s that?” Pat asked. “Her kunai. Kiddo gave me one of her stupid kunai.”
****** Hidden within the recesses of a craggy outcropping three pairs of eyes watched the passing demon horde. At the center of this particular stream was a rather large creature riding atop the back of what could only be called a cross between a lenny, a lupe, and a blender. One of the commanding officers. Slowly, three hands drew three throwing stars each. None of the ninjas spoke to each other. Everything had already been said and all the plans were already laid out. Kill the commander and then get out of there. So simple in theory. But here and now the demons seemed larger than they could have imagined and more fierce than any nightmare could have predicted. Their leader glanced at the other two. Kittygirl and Ken, both competent and trustworthy. Mindela was glad to have them with her. Silently, she nodded and then leapt out of cover, tracing an arc across the sky. Two shapes shot out behind her and at the peak of hteir leap, all three ninjas threw. The shurikens flew straight at their target and with bellows of pain, six of the demons fell, clutching at their eyes and throats. Then the three ninjas landed and drew their katanas. Mindela made it the closest to the commander in her leap. She dove past one demon, slashing at its knee as she did. The blood that coated her blade was a noxious green and smelled like acid. The screams of the invaders resounded in her ears but she brushed them off, her focus narrowing in on her target. Somewhere, Ken and Kittygirl were covering her for the demons to either side fell away, clutching at kunai handles and the bladed stars of the ninja. There. Just before her, the commander, with a sword of his own. This would have to be done fast and clean. She leapt, flipped and in mid-motion threw three kunai directly at the beast. He blocked two but the third stuck in his shoulder, twisting in the yellow skin as he brought his sword around to bear at Mindela as she landed. Sword met sword and she felt the impact all the way up to her shoulders. He came around for an overhead strike and she rolled to the side, grabbed hold of the strange horse’s leg, and ran her blade along the tendon. It bellowed and fell, toppling the commander to the ground. She leapt upon him and jammed her sword into his neck. Something pitched her forwards then, sending her tumbling over his body and into the dirt, her sword left behind her and the world spinning in a haze. Gagging, she struggled to her knees and heard the frantic cry of Kittygirl calling her name. Something… in her back. She twisted and a fresh wave of pain lanced up her body. Arrows. “Get out of here!” she cried, staggering to her feet. Behind her Kittygirl desperately fought to keep the demons from reaching the injured ninja. Ken was nowhere to be seen. “Kittygirl!” There – Ken. Limp on the ground with three spears standing like banners from his form. Mindela pulled forth some new shurikens and threw in a circle, sending the demons staggering back and giving her breathing room. She glanced over at Kittygirl again. She would not leave her remaining ninja behind. But Kittygirl had grown suddenly still and slid to the ground to reveal a grinning monster behind her, holding a short sword slick with the red blood of a human. “No,” Mindela choked, “No.” She wanted to reclaim her sword and dive into the fray, slaying everything that moved until she too was cut down and her friends were avenged. But she remembered what Stal had said – that every person was needed, up until the very end. This could not be her ending, not yet. “Ninja – TELEPORT!” she cried and leapt into the air, above the heads of the demons and then the world around her blurred and reformed.

((part 4 - cont))
As with any teleportation, the sudden displacement of air resulted in a rather loud pop that echoed across the small forest. Furred ears swiveled at the sound and a spotted body froze, senses attune. The demons shouldn’t be here yet. They were still at least an hour away, if Spot remembered her briefing correctly. Then… what? Trembling, she edged through the forest to the sound of the noise. Now another sound – coughing, wracked and pained coughing. Spot abandoned all caution and ran to it, bursting through the undergrowth to come across a form dressed in black huddled on the ground. There were three arrows standing out of her back and the grass around her appeared wet. Spot knelt and carefully removed the scarf hiding the ninja’s features. Bright pink hair spilled forth in response. “Mindela…” “I should have stayed,” the ninja gasped, laughing harshly and struggling to breath, “I should have stayed and avenged Ken and Kittygirl. They deserved a better end then that.” “They are…” “Dead. And I’m dying. Should have guessed – we use poison all the time. Why wouldn’t they?” She cried out and her entire body spasmed. Spot howled softly in despair and put pressure on Mindela’s shoulders, trying to hold the girl still. “Please don’t leave me,” the leopard pleaded. But there was no answer. Spot felt like she couldn’t breath and she collapsed over Mindela’s body, finding herself unable to weep. Maybe this was all a dream. Just a bad dream that she couldn’t wake up from. In the corner of her vision, the tufted shafts of the arrows hovered like locusts. Why was this happening? Why had they come? She could not find any answers. “But they came,” she whispered to Mindela who would never hear her again, “They did. And I’m not going to let them go any further.” Spot rose to her feet. Carefully, she pulled the arrows free and threw them aside. Reverently, she lay Mindela on her back and crossed her hands across her chest. This was all she could do for her. Maybe she’d find this place again and have a proper vigil. But for now… there was vengeance waiting. “If they truly are demons,” Spot whispered to the approaching night, “then I shall be an angel of wrath and retribution.” And she walked from the clearing. She held in her hand a weapon this time, more than just her claws. A wakazashi, the short sword of the ninja. Loosely tied around her neck was a strip of black cloth, fluttering as she walked: Mindela’s scarf. Yes, there would be a reckoning.

Angelis Luci - part 5
The hallways were filled with the constant hiss of steam. It spilled out of pipes and blanketed the narrow floor. They were truly in the bowels of the beast now and soon they would find the heart of the monstrosity and be rid of it. Kiddo’s plan had worked flawlessly. The three ninjas slipped unseen through enemy lines, pausing only once to stab a rather careless straggler until he stopped moving. They were ninja, this was what they did best. The airship itself was indeed quite vulnerable to infiltration. While the outside was that of an armored ship, suspended by what appeared to be an extremely ornate balloon, there was one fatal weakness in the design. The gun ports. While the thing bristled with cannon it also bristled with open holes. All it took was one well-aimed kunai and then one of those ports was unmanned and open for three ninjas to slip through. From there it was a matter of winding through the ship to where it was powered. The hallways were growing steadily warmer. Wanderer was scouting ahead and soon his all-clear whistle filtered to the other two ninja’s ears. They ran through the corridor to where he was waiting. It was a large open room with what appeared to be an immense boiler at the center. Kiddo squinted, not sure if she could believe her eyes. The thing had a conveyer belt feeding it what appeared to be… mist. The very mist that covered the gray lands. “What the…?” Crystal whispered, also staring at the mist. “Kiddo,” Wanderer called, “We got a live one here.” The two ninjas quickly ran over to where he stood, one foot planted on the neck of a rather scrawny demon. It was like a twilight purple goblin with a potbelly. “We got questions,” Kiddo said smoothly, kneeling and drawing a kunai in plain eyeshot of the captive invader, “I would hope you have answers.” “Yes, yes, I do!” he howled, “Dun hurt me.” “That was remarkably easy,” Crystal snarled, “How can we trust you?” The captive considered for a moment. “I’m a coward?” he offered, “Dun wanna get hurt. Not worth it. Just a boiler worker.” “And your boiler,” Kiddo said, “What does it run off?” “Mist. That mist there, the stuff that covers your world. Lots of it here, more than any other world. Will give us many many years of fuel.” “Fuel…” Wanderer whispered, “This is why you invaded?” “The mist is the stuff of dreams and the fabric of our imaginations,” Crystal speculated, “It’s the reason our world exists. Without it…” “…a world would fall apart and die….” “…unless it was replenished by an outside source.” The three ninjas stared at each other in astonishment, and then down at the demon who was crying freely now. “You,” Crystal snapped, “Your world. Does it not have any mist?” He shook his head. “It should. Any mind has creative output – do you not dream?” “Dream…?” he whispered, as if tasting the world for the first time, “Is that something you can eat?” Wanderer didn’t answer, just delivered a sharp kick to the back of the things skull. It went limp in an unconscious heap. “Right then,” he said, “I think we have enough answers. They lost the ability to keep their world intact through the mist so they’re going to destroy ours instead. Well, I for one don’t want to stand around and let that happen. So. We blow up the boiler and no more airship.” “Right. Crystal, Wanderer…” Kiddo took a deep breath. “You have ten minutes to get out of here. Go.” Crystal turned and started for the way they had come, her head down and trying not to look at either ninja. Wanderer, however, did not move. “Go on,” Kiddo snarled, “We went over this already. Someone has to make sure the boiler blows and we might as well use my phoenix fire. That’ll get rid of it for sure.” “And what about Sabreur’s firebombs?” Wanderer pulled out three metallic spheres. “Don’t have a timer. You’d have to stay and detonate them by hand. Now get out of here.” “I’m staying. You go.” “Wanderer! I’m the phoenix – I’ll resurrect.” He shook his head and curled his hand around the bombs. “Not if the ashes are scattered, which they will be by the explosion. I’m not stupid Kiddo and I don’t want you to die here. We need you elsewhere, at the fortress for the last stand.” “Trying to be a hero?” she asked suspiciously. Wanderer shook his head. “No. Trying to protect you.” “You can’t. It’s impossible to protect me from everything.” She dropped her head but it was lifted a second later by Wanderer’s finger under her chin. He was smiling. “No,” he agreed, “but I can protect you from this. If you let me.” “I….” “I know. Now go.” And he quickly kissed her on the cheek and spun away to face the boiler and the fire within. Crystal stood over the fox-phoenix as she wept, staring out across the barren wasteland that the demons crawled across and the debris of the airship rained upon like miniature suns spiraling out of the night sky. Back at the Ninja HQ her favorite tree would be shedding its petals now, sending them cascading down into the ornamental koi pond. Countless haikus had been written about such a sight. Now, with the heavens streaming fire and for all her words, Kiddo could not compose a single line about this passing.
*****
Central NTWF was abandoned. Litter blew in the dark lanes and doors hung open and abandoned. Occasionally a shadow flittered through but it was difficult to tell if that was just a retreating NTWF or a trick of the moonlight. Further west, the mass of people moved closer to the fortress and to safety. Already some ninja groups had returned and were now aiding on the front line of the battle, buying time along with the rest of the main part of the NTWF army.
This continued for most of the night. Hit and run, strike and retreat, spread confusion among the invader forerunners to slow their advance. Ghostly forms sped through the trees, relaying information back and forth between groups as Linny’s white weewoo brigade put itself to use. Finally, the order for a full retreat was given and the groups dissolved into the night, allowing the demons to advance unchecked towards the fortress. They tromped in massive rows through the central NTWF, disregarding the delicate pieces of art and beloved works in progress. This was a thing foreign to them and yet it was the very thing that would serve to keep their world alive, if just for a little bit longer.
Lady Jade Phoenix watched the last stragglers stream into the gates of the fortress from the battlements. The fortress was carved into the rock of the mountain itself, perched atop a winding and narrow road. Beyond it was Neopia. Here, the NTWFers would have to make a stand, or their world would perish and the demons would be allowed full access to Neopia as well.
A young woman wearing a rather worn “I Love Sloth” t-shirt came panting up to Patjade.
“Reports are in,” she gasped, “Spot finally showed up, been out killing demons by the dozen. Said that Ken, Kittygirl, and Mindela are all dead. Also, we lost Eggz during a skirmish, her group just came in. So all that’s left on our unaccounted list is Kiddo, Crystal, and Wanderer.”
“Thank you Del!,” Patjade replied and raised her chin to regard the land before her. The invading army would have a difficult time scaling these heights and all the time they did the NTWF would be raining arrows down upon them. Assuming they survived that they’d have Sabreur’s defenses to contend with. The only thing that could defeat them now was if Kiddo and her group failed at destroying the airship. Patjade didn’t want to contemplate that.
“Seal the gate!” she called out and below her came the creak and grind of gears and levers. Finally, a resounding boom shook the bones of everyone inside and sent a flutter of claustrophobia through the group. “Archers, to your positions. Runners, at the ready. Let’s look sharp now.”
This was it. They’d be here by morning and then it would be time to see what the NTWF was capable of.
