Recently I was watching the late-night news show "Tavis Smiley" on PBS. Well, he always refers to "black" people understanding stuff that "white" people wouldn't understand. Like, this woman was on cuz she wrote a book called "Bling" and Tavis said, "You should explain that for our white audiences...after all, this is PBS, you know. Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle." So my quesiton is: Should race discern the message that the media is trying to get across?

I personally think it's kind of stupid, but hey! It's free speech!

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. Stereotypes are nonsense no matter who believes them. On the other hand, any individual or private organization has the freedom to take up any position it wants, although I'm not likely to watch any show that expresses views I find repugnant.
Morally, I don't believe any individual should make remarks suggesting all people with a certain coloration are alike. Legally, I don't believe ignorant jokes should be censored.

I don't find that fair. It's not nice that people say stuff like that. Especially since half the time, the're wrong about peopple not getting it. (White guy at home:But, dude, I, like, get Bling, and I'm a white dude.)

I don't think I understand the question itself, but I do understand that a company who are viewing their shows, so anybody can see them doesn't have the right to discriminate others in any way. I mean, Canada/USA are free countries, but to a limit. For example, I have the right to play my music as loud as I want. But then if an old man is trying to sleep next door, I'm barging into HIS rights. It's a bit like that.

TV stereotypes label white males as lazy and aggressive, white females as Stepford Wives, black males as ganster-rappers, black females as loud 'sisters', gay men as girly and flamboyant... need I go on? 99.99% of TV is crap. All I gots to say.

That's... not right. Media thinks all people of a certain race are alike, but it's not true.
And then, when I hear them do that, I smirk and go, "What about me? I'm Chinese-Italian, where's my label? Come on, you have to have one for me!"
Burn media, burn. I'd like to see them try to come up with a label for someone Oriental-White-Black.
Well, someday the good people of our generation will have control of the media. All will be right someday. ... Hey, I said someday, not TODAY!!

Huh? I don't get it. I'm a little slow sometimes. But it sounds offensive, that's all I know...

Yeah, so all black people, be they African-American, African-African, Torres Straight Islander or Aboriginal are automatically "down with the crowd".

This is my first actual post, outside of my introducing myself to the universe here. xD
I think that America as a whole is stupid. No matter HOW you look at it...we're very, very stupid. I don't think that any other country singles out races quite like we do.
Besides that, stereotypes are stupid, but a "stereotype" is basically one common trait, exaggerated to make it seem funnier. However, some people don't get the joke and then begin to see all people as part of the stereotype.
