Okay, Dave gets me up at 6 this morning, upset because the internet connection has been lost for about an hour. I go through the usual round of questions
"Is it plugged in?"
"Yes."
"Did the cat knock it over again?"
"No..."
"Is it turned on?"
"Yes."
"Did you try unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in?"
"Yes..."
Okay, so I call tech support and am serenaded by the classical station for the better part of an hour. Finally get on the phone with another human being who informs me that there WAS a state-wide outage awhile ago, but that it was all fixed now. "No," I told him "Its not all fixed, because mine doesn't work..." so we troubleshoot for about a half hour....reset the computer, go into the windows configuration, reset a few options, unplug the modem and plug it back in umpteen times...
Finally he transfers me to to second tier where they do the same thing. When we've finally exhausted all of our options, he says "Say, your modem isn't on standby, is it?" "....what's that?" I said. "That's a feature we enabled about a week ago. When you're not using your computer for awhile, the modem shuts off its internet availability to keep others from using it. Hit the power button for me."
*holy choir of angels singing as modem pops back to life*
"Does it work now?"
"Yep...but I haven't ever had it go on standby before today..."
"Well, now if its not in use for a few hours, it'll do that as a safety feature."
".....hoo kay....so basically this call gets chalked up in both of our books of idiots...me for keeping you on the phone for an hour about a power switch and you for not letting your customers know this feature was now active..."
"Haha...yup pretty much. Can I help you with anything else today?"
"No....thanks...*click*"
*has been back online for about five minutes and decided to come share this with all of you first* ....maybe I need to go back to bed.
