I always considered "oy vay" to be one of those "oh boy"-in-an-exasperated-tone things

Actually it's in hebrew, I know cos I live in Israel

And yeah, it is used in the context of, "oh, brother", "geez", "whoa", etc. It's a generic exclamation. I know that Yiddish is spoken widely in Israel, but confusing Yiddish with Hebrew is like confusing French with Spanish. My Yiddisha great-grandmother, God rest her soul, would tell you to bite your tongue clean off! |

Well we say it in hebrew like it's a word in hebrew,a nd yiddish isn't THAT common ere as far as I know, hebrew is the main language around here.
BUT, if you say so, I guess you might be right...

Its like one of those phrases that someone just decided to randomly incorporate in their language... like how "chic" and "a la mode" are now sometimes used as English phrases from their French origins.

I'm late, aren't I?  Well, yes, it's Yiddish and not Hebrew. How do I know? I learn Hebrew and Yidish at school... It is an "Oh boy..." or "Oh man..." or "Not again..." type of thing. I hear it every Tuesday, when I have Yiddish... fwee. My Yiddish teacher is strange. Whenever we have a Yiddish test, we get to study RIGHT BEFORE IT. o.o We also wasted I-don't-know-how-many-periods (it was a couple of months) watching a movie. |
