Depends. I agree, depends on how it is written. For instance, What Does Valentine's Day Mean? Was sooooo cliche. But it wasn't a problem because the story was a humourous one so it being cliche was funny. But if it's not humour (which I doubt it would be) then I guess it's OK. But don't add in too much goody-two-shoes 'you have to believe in yourself!' junk. |

I've seen some stories with very cliched subjects that manage to put entirely new spins on them and make the subject actually interesting, so I'd say as long as it's well written it's not a bad thing.

Yeah, it does depend on how it's written. For example, don't make the bully a Grarrl or a Skeith, because they're ALWAYS portrayed as the villian. You could add an interesting twist, make the victim a Grarrl who doesn't like being "Grarrlish" and then make the villian a Shoyru or something. Don't like Shoyrus... They're always the good guys... Makes me mad.
And if the Pet is going to be bullied, then you should make sure that it isn't for a cliched' reason. Like, don't make it because the Pet isn't painted, because that's been done a zillion times. Or because the Pet's owner is poor, that's also quite overdone.
I say go for it; it really depends on how you write it.

I pretty much agree with what everyoen else said. Just make sure you don't make it, like TK said, a "If you befriend someone, they won't know what to say! Beeee happpyy togetherrrrr..." type deal.

Except now, as others have noted on other threads, there's kinda an anti-cliché cliché. *Everyone* recommends that a villian not be a Grarrl or Skeith, so... Just put all the species names in a hat and draw random ones out for the pro- and antagonists. That might work ^^;; |

Does that mean you shouldn't do it?
If you do a good job, go for it.
A story about a faerie being bullied by, erm, unpainted petpets, may prove to be very funny if done well

Well personally, I think cliches are more likely to be published  I just got an extremely cliched story I wrote published in Issue 80, "A Faerie Assignment". Faerie helps neopet, both live happily ever after. Go ahead, if you can write it in a unique way. ^^ |

I wrote one of those bully stories. "SilverEmerald: Eater of Plastic Butter Knives". I made sure not to be biased with the bully species. For instance, the victim was a Skeith. The bully was a Kyrii and the other was a Mynci (I wanted bypeds so they'd be able to wear leather jackets) and the third bully WAS a Grarrl but he turned out the be nice in the end.
Plus, SilverEmerald (Skeith) was being bullied because he ate plastic butter knives, another twist.
