I apologise if this question has been asked a million times, but I tried a search and could only find people posting that their submissions had been held over, and so forth. I have two stories held over, and I was just wondering, when something is held over, does that mean that it *might* be in, or that it will be in, but just in a future issue? Any replies would be most appreciated, thank you

Getting a held over letter usually means it will be put in futures issues.

A held-over letter means you have a chance. Snowflake used to emphasize repeatedly that a held-over was no guarantee of publication, and when I asked whether it at least guaranteed notice if the story was rejected, she said no. So... it means you could get accepted, or you could get rejected, and you might or might not be told if it was rejected.
It's fairly encouraging, though. I get the idea it's pretty rare at this point to be accepted without first receiving a held-over letter.

Hmm.. so pretty much a 'maybe-maybe not' note then. Thanks very much for the replies

I sticked this thread in order to let others know about how it works.
Being held over does not guarantee that you get in, but it means that the item you sent in is good enough to be held for further consideration.
In the past, an item was held for up to two weeks for consideration (not counting special issue submissions). if one didn't get another response after 2 weeks, it meant that the submission somehow got lost or something, so you just sent it in.
I hope this helps, and if Droplet has anything else to add, perhaps she can do so here.

I've had a series held over for several weeks before it was accepted.
But it was held over because I had another series running. ^^;;;
Anyhoo, I have a question - can you get an acceptance letter without a held-over one?

Anyhoo, I have a question - can you get an acceptance letter without a held-over one? Yes, I've had an acceptance a long time ago without a held over but I can't remember if it was a story or comic. I thought that it got lost in the form, then one day - hey presto! - accepted. =)

Held over isn't a guarantee, but it's a very good sign. Due to the sheer volume of really cool stuff you guys send in, you might have to wait a while once you're held. But I really try not to hold something unless I'm going to use it. That being said, it's rare to go straight to acceptance without being held first.

Excellent. Thanks muchly, Droplet. With that being said, when are the best times to send in stuff to get held-over letters? ^^; Erm, when you don't already have something big in. I would prefer not to put a writer in the same issue multiple times. I know it was done a lot in the past, but there were also fewer users on Neopets submitting to the NT back then. I will make exceptions for special cases, though. There isn't one day that's better than any other; I try to take a few from each day of the week.

Hey, question, after the held-over letter, if you're accepted, will you get an acception letter?
