My latest obsession has been sucking up both my time for homework and Neopets. Her name is Lois McMaster Bujold, and she has won four Hugo awards for her Vorkosigan series, three of them being best sci-fi novel of the year.
I can say a lot about her books, but it will all boil down to this : her work is stellar and amazing.
Mostly her books (most of them part of the Vorkosigan series) are 80%-95% rated PG-13. However, almost all of her works has some dash of rated R content. Her novella "The Mountains of Mourning" is about the only story by her which might be free of mature content, and it might merit only a PG rating. But the mature content she puts in her works is is handled maturely.
Also, I know my dad would not like her works. First of all, she's not orthodox when it comes to scientifc accuracy. Second, there are some remarkable coinsidences, even the occasional deux-ex-machina, though it happens in Harry Potter as well. It you are a nit-picker like my father, well, you're missing out on some great books.
When you feel you have the time, and are comfortable with the rating, I highly recommend starting with Shards of Honor or The Warrior's Apprentice. They are both good books, but one of the good features about her Vorkosigan series is that they get better and better, with one or two exceptions. Stike waiting for when you have time - if I have to suffer this addiction in the middle of school time, why not take you too. Read. Now.
Or if anyone here has read any of her books, care ye to talk?
