I'd like to warn anyone who is unfamiliar with Mercedes Lackey that most of her books contain some sex, and some of her works contain rape and/or homosexuality. I personally do not let these deter me, but it they disturb you, you can ask which books do not contain these elements, and I and others who have read her works can do our best to steer you. However I consider her works to be fantasy and not erotica, and very good fantasy at that. You have been forwarned.
With that aside, I admire a lot of qualities about Lackey's writing, She has a way of gripping the reader, and she has a fertile imagination for weaving an imaginary world.
I love the "Heralds of Valdemar" triology, though I always think of it as the Talia books since most of her Valdemar books have heralds in them. "Magic's Pawn" from the "Last Herald Mage" trilogy is probably the book with the most depth, and "Magic's Promise" is also good, though the final part of the trilogy, "Magic's Price" I honestly cannot understand the fuss about. I could figure out halfway through the book that Vanyel was going to sacrifice himself, and Lackey's treatment of the whole thing was not fresh enough to prevent a bad aftertaste. Arrows of the Queen also had it's cliches, but it had a delicious sense lacking from Magic's Price.
The Oathbound was something of a dissappointment, but it was made up by the good Oathbreakers and By the Sword. I also like the Mage Winds trilogy a lot. However when I read the Mage Storms trilogy, somehow Valdemar lost it's magic. Something about it was just too bland, I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I'm just too used to Valdemar. And I have no temptation to read the The Mage Wars trilogy, the Owl trilogy, or any other Valdemar book, nor re-read any of the Valdemar books save the Talia books, Magic's Pawn, and maybe one day Oathbreakers.
However Mercedes Lackey has some great novels outside of the Valdemar series. So far I've read The Black Swan, Firebird, Born to Run (w/ Larry Dixon), and Reap the Whirlwing (with C.J. Cherreyh), as well as a collection of short stories including a Witch World story, the Skittiy stories, two Diana Tregarde stories, a Valdemar short story, one where Mercedes Lackey herself was the main character, and a few others.
Do I count as a fan or not?
