I am writing a creative story based on the concept of "Magical Realism"... in which a magical sort of thing happens in a realistic, identifiable (sp?) setting. Read "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings" (I forget the author) to get an idea of what it is.
I sometimes think of Neopets as magical realism, but even more so I think of dragons. Dragons living in a modern-day society as wild animals, pets... everything. The story I'm starting is about a dog-breeding family in which their prize dog dies while giving birth, and only one pup survives. It has red eyes, no fur, two bumbs on its back, but acts just like a normal little puppy. As the strory continues, I plan on slowly but surely developing its physical features into that of a dragon... but it would still act like a dog. I also want to somehow connect this to segragation and seperating "ugly" things from "beautiful" ones, and maybe take on a perspective of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
I haven't started writing it, but as I do, I will post it. Any suggestions? Ideas?

Not really. Just . . . good luck . . . (I've never read that book, so . . .)

Interesting... reminds me just a slight bit of a book I read back in elementary school about a boy who finds a chicken egg that a dinosaur hatches from...
I haven't read the book/story that you referred to, but I took a Spanish literature class last year, and magical realism was pretty much the order of the day....

You might like to look up a book called "Pigs Don't Fly" by Mary Brown, it has a similar situation with a piglet that becomes more dragonlike as the story progresses. It wasn't at all like yours sounds other than that, it was more of a humourous high-fantasy quest story, and I think the dragon ended up having to spend a certain amount of time a month as a human because the girl kissed him three times as a pig/dragon-thing.
I do like the sound of your story, and must admit that magical realism type writings are my soft spot (not to mention that I love dragons - but doesn't everyone?), I'd love to read it when it's posted.
