Simple question, and the title is rather self-explanatory: what's our limits on killing TNT characters?
A couple of things I do know:
- we can have them be dead. If a story is set ahead of the "now" in which Neo exists, we can have TNT characters be dead without any concern. Not sure the limit on circumstance of death, but that's another story
- we can indirectly kill them, with a bit of ambiguity. So sort of have them die off-shot as it were, and not 100% affirm death. Can probably link this with point one and have them declared dead after.
This leaves the question: can we kill them in the here-and-now? I know we can kill our own characters, but what of those TNT have lovingly created for us? I would guess we get more leeway with the "villains", but what of the rest? Can we kill those that are not framed as villains in the greater context of Neo or the story itself?
For those wanting specifics of my case, see the spoiler:
What d'you think? Would be useful both now, and going forward. What can I say, I'm a horrible person who likes killing characters off in some form or other

Basically, I need to cut down the Brain Tree. This is a greyer area as I see it anyhow because it's not a pet but a tree, albeit a sentient one. Now allowing for some nonsense to circumvent outright "it's dead", suggesting regrowth and yada yada that is a clear concession, would it be allowable to cut down the tree, d'you think?
This is without graphic blow-by-blow hacking down of the tree (in fact it's rather unnaturally quick and easy) I should mention, but it still happens quite clearly (and it does put up a fight beforehand, but no real damage is inflicted until it's cut down off-shot). The tree is there. We get a crash. The tree has fallen down, and the guy with the magic axe did it.
Also, in this case, the Brain Tree is the innocent victim. It is the one attacked by the bad guys.
